Thanks for the effort. I'm sure plenty of people can find something for themselves. I remember in my youth 95% of games I played were just demos, and the rest were pirated versions (don't judge, we didn't have money for expensive imported games).
+1 Thank you for this! Somehow I didn't realize Xenonauts 2 had a demo. Checking it out right now!

I miss this being the norm. Each month I'd buy a gaming magazine and half the fun was checking what game demos were on the disc. Bought several games off of good first impressions from the demo.

Yes, those demo and shareware disks were such a joy for us kids in the early to mid 90's.

My father used to travel abroad sometimes and brought me back whatever he could find free or cheap, and we had local magazines and promotions that produced such discs. We used to trade shareware/demo disks (at first floppy, then CDs) around the neighborhood and we were really careful not to damage them. And we went to each other's apartments and play together all bunched up around the monitor and took turns playing the same level over and over. It didn't matter, when we got bored of one game we still had plenty more to try out. I also miss this sometimes.
You're missing the only demo I have claimed for my library in your list, though you do have it in the list of news-posts:

Seven: The Days Long Gone

But now that I've got the game itself free from Humble Bundle's giveaway, I wonder how I can get rid of the Demo entry in my library?

IIRC you can ask support to permanently delete any game in your library, demo or not.

It didn't matter, when we got bored of one game we still had plenty more to try out. I also miss this sometimes.
Ah yes, I think my first pc came with some shareware titles already installed. I can't remember passing floppies around for them, but I do remember floppy exchanges on the school yard with full games. They were sometimes temperamental iirc, especially the 3.5''.
Not sure what the point of the list is, since anyone can just filter the catalogue for price="free" and hide DLCs, and the vast majority of the results will be all the demos, prologues, etc. Even counting freeware releases of full games, there aren't exactly that many free titles to look through (106 at present).

That being said, I'm very bored today, so -- since the list of freebies is, as I said, fairly small -- I cross-checked, and found the following missing from your list:

The Long Reach - DEMO
MarZ: Tactical Base Defense Demo
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden Demo
Predynastic Egypt Demo
Relicta Demo
Resolutiion Demo
Ring of Pain Demo
Snowtopia Demo
Spiritfarer Demo
Star Vikings Demo
Steel Rats Demo
Stories Untold Demo
System Shock [remake] Demo

Delores really shouldn't be on the list, either: it's a separate game that was made years after the game in whose world it's set. (Not to mention the fact that it's in the wrong place in the list, alphabetically. ;) )
On the other hand, there's also Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius, which isn't on the list -- and I don't know enough about it or its series to be able to say whether it should count as a prologue-/epilogue-style demo, or if it's more of a "freeware standalone mini-game" like Delores, or Stasis spin-off Cayne (I assume the latter).

(Also, in case you didn't know, proper alphabetization demands ignoring initial articles (A, An, The) when ordering a list. That way, you don't wind up with a weird little sub-list under The in the T's. ;)

For anyone who only wants to see free demos, but is too lazy to look through barely more than two pages of results (yet wants to see the pretty pictures on the "covers"), the link below is, AFAICT, currently comprehensive (other than the two not-really-demos and the one not-sure-if-it-could-count-as-a-demo which I mentioned above).

https://www.gog.com/games?sort=title&price=free&hide=dlc&search=demo%20%7C%20teaser%20%7C%20sneak%20peek%20%7C%20free%20trial%20%7C%20alpha%20%7C%20prologue%20%7C%20first%20sin%20%7C%20thespian%20feast%20%7C%20yellow%20mask&page=1

Fantastic! ^

and very clever link, but it might not include all future Demos. (could you keep it updated?)
Alphabetization cannot ignore authors wish, like in the The Occupation Demo or e.g. Bleeding Moons Demo without "the".

Here we are 66+14=80 Demos. Thank You truly!

Why Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure is a Demonstration of a Bigger World
Description
"Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure started out as a prototype for Ron Gilbert’s new point-and-click adventure game engine and grew into a fun little game. It is not a sequel to Thimbleweed Park and is probably missing all of the small bells and whistles that would make it a commercially viable game. This was a challenging game to make because we had to use almost exclusively “found art” from Thimbleweed Park to create all new puzzles. Also because we couldn’t go outside IRL. As a thank you to our fans, we are releasing it for free as something you can have fun with in these odd times. You don’t have to have played Thimbleweed Park to enjoy this mini-adventure. (But if you do enjoy it, why not check out Thimbleweed Park, hmm?)"
Originated as the mini-adventure and not a full game.
It is uncertain to place it under D or T, as it is a Mini-adventure of a Thimbleweed Park and it is about Delores.
Let`s place this Art under the D letter.

Why Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius is a/are Free Game(s)
Description
"Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius is the second installment in the Sunrider trilogy, which includes all of the content of First Arrival."
Originated as a separate full game(s).
Let`s include this Art too. I guess, that way, any free game that has second and further parts can be counted as Demonstration version for a Bigger World.

Thanks for the list. Was wondering about this a while back.More demos than i expected...
I guess a list might be handy for some who have no clue, as GOG don't make the Free Games section of the website very obvious.

I regularly check - https://www.gog.com/games?sort=title&price=free&page=1

Currently 4 pages of free stuff - Games, Demos, Prologues, Soundtracks, DLCs, etc.

You can also elect to hide all the DLCs, though alas no option for the Free games or Demos only.

Maybe this thread should list the latest new demo, because GOG doesn't always mention (advertise) newly added demos ... though they have been getting a bit better at doing so.

I've collected about 94 demos here at GOG since I joined on 1st May 2017, so a few are no longer available, but the greater majority still are, including my very first - System Shock Demo.

P.S. There are some games here that include a demo for another game ... have to buy that first game though.

Seb369: Why Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure is a Demonstration of a Bigger World

Originated as the mini-adventure and not a full game.
It was not a demo for Thimbleweed Park. Demos are always created and released before, or sometimes very shortly (maybe up to a month) after, the games they mean to promote. They are literally demonstrations of how the new or upcoming game works (and runs) so that one can judge whether or not to buy the full game. Delores was developed and released three years after Thimbleweed Park did. It may be free, it may not be "full length" (though it is a full game), but it isn't a demo. Obviously you can include it in your list if you want, but if you're going to include all free titles, not just demos, then I really don't see the purpose of the thread.

avatar
Seb369: and very clever link, but it might not include all future Demos. (could you keep it updated?)
I probably won't. You (or anyone else) could easily do so, though.
The search terms I used were as follows:

demo | teaser | sneak peek | free trial | alpha | prologue | first sin | thespian feast | yellow mask

The vertical bar symbol ( | ) can be used as a separator to allow adding separate searches into a single pool of results, rather than narrowing the search. (Obviously, I had to add 3 game-specific search terms to include demos that didn't have "demo" or any similar term in the title. Also, "sneak peak" currently has no search results -- the Liberated demo is currently officially called a "free trial", its URL notwithstanding -- but I left the term in just in case some future demo uses that term.)
But really, just filtering for free games (without DLC) and manually scanning is less work. (Also, using multiple search terms like that completely breaks the sorting.)

Seb369: Alphabetization cannot ignore authors wish, like in the The Occupation Demo or e.g. Bleeding Moons Demo without "the".
...I really don't know what you think alphabetization is for, or why you think an author is making a statement about how they wish games to appear in ordered lists when they include an article. I guarantee you that the developer and publisher of The Occupation (for example) didn't start the title with "The" because they wanted the game to appear in the T's in computer-alphabetized lists.

Liberated is just Liberated like me, you can be Liberated, so it is not The Liberated...e.g. yop it is a free trial...I have updated it hours ago before your post ;)

Cool link workout ^
