because its an ungodly difficult undertaking that eats up vast amounts of times
when it doesnt work its awfull

when it does and the animation is smooth as all out its amazing

just look at anything by ray harryhausen ( the skeleton fight from jason an the argonauts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF_Fi7x93PY this is pure undilluted awesomeness
or this one from a sinbad movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiTSyZbIjAg )

the nightmare before christmas

the fantastic mr fox https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmYmKDsx48w

now keep in mind that each every one of these puppets have to move a fraction of an inch 24 times for every second

Problem is I can still see the jerkyness of the animation. The shakyness.

Steven Speilberg went from Stop Motion to CGI for Jurassic Park because of it. CGI just had this smooth movements.

spielberg ;p
and well then you see more then most of us all i see is impressive smooth animation and awesome special effects

edit: actually do you notice a difference between 24 fps and 48 fps ?
have you ever seen the hobbit in 48 fps ?

cgi has its own problems

most of the time it looks fake especially from the 90's jurrasic park and T2 still look convincing because they had 100 million dollar budgets

the blood storm from blade 1 or anything from spawn look less then convincing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rpr7TTnXty8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEOT3hRCaFs (fast forward to 2,50 or so )

event horizon stil looks good but thats because its cgi is limited most of its special effects are practical
practical special effects are still better for the most because there is actually something there for the actors to work with it roots the movie in some sort of reality

even the tentacles from the kraken in pirates 2 look remarkably fake
im not saying cgi has no place in moevis but it ages a lot lot faster

In the end both can look fake in thier own way. Its just that CGI can edge out stop motion when its done good.

Like Davy Jones in Dead Man's Chest:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo-OYwh6KHA
^ i think davey jones could look good with practical effects but those face tentacles could only work in cgi

and this clip just astounds me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPeoWrqKhDo
harryhausen bringinga skeleton to life

btw have you have seen the hobbit in 48 fps and if so do you notice a difference ?
I've posted this clip a thousand times, but for me it never gets old.

Once again, Alderaan shot first.

The thing is when I watched it in the theater I go to I cannot really tell. Besides I thought only select theaters showed the 48 FPS version.

I did notice it looked alot smoother in my screening.

Also the Hobbit 3 visually was a splendor.

i know thats why i asked
you said stop motion looks herky jerky to you while it looks smooth to me

while i can barley perceive games running at 60 fps and see no difference between 30 and 60 fps
so i was wondering if you saw the 48 fps version of the hobbit or not because its the only major motion picture in 48 fps

I will admit at least the skeletons are done well. Other Stop Motion can look extremely jerky and fake:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=805r-NqeAj4

To me Stop Motion can work with say Robots, that Statue monster Talos, etc.

But than again that same arguement can be used for CGI. A CGI Robot is more convincing then a CG flesh and blood creature.

Also the video you showed me Blade the last part of the fight where the guy blows up was fuckin gnarly.

we are getting somewhere ;p

i dont think the stop motion in that clip you linked looks jerky
but its very clear that both creatures are fake
well done animation but fake creatures

in the blade clip its the cgi blood that lets the side down
it looks like strawberry jam

which is a pity because blade is a great movie ( and the start of the marvel movie renaissance not x-men or spiderman as many peopel say it started with blade blade showed it was viable to make serious super her movies based on marvel characters )
