voodoo47: ok, let's try it one more time.

-uninstall the game, and install it again, this time to C:\games\thief
-extract the whole tgfix archive to the thief folder, overwrite old files
-make sure all *.crf files are moved to the RES folder (either by using movecrf.bat, which IS in the archive, no mater how you want to look at it, or move them manually)
-edit cam.cfg with notepad and modify game_screen_size line to reflect the resolution you want
-run thief1.exe if you have Thief1, and thiefg.exe if you have Thief Gold

if you are unable to follow these instructions, I would suggest you get a more skilled family member or a friend to help you out.
It's running at my selected resolution, the menus appear in the middle of the screen, blank space to the sides - I assume normal? Gameplay is full screen.

The only thing missing now is cutscenes.
yeah, the menu thing is normal. it is possible to stretch them, but do you really want that?

the cutscenes are major pain - all you can do is remove ALL installed codecs (like xvid) and codec packs from your system, and install either cccp or klite. the cutscenes should start to work then. hopefully.

Sigh... really?

I got the GOG version so I wouldn't have to struggle with my CD copy because I was told these are the most up to date versions.

There's no other fix to get the intro movie, briefings and cutscenes to play?
How much game backstory am I missing out on without them?

you will be missing quite a lot without the cutscenes, unfortunately.

Funny thing, I have KLite and the only way I can get any of them work is by explicitly putting game exes into "never use ffdshow in" exceptions list

This is quite a nuisance, is there anyway to get this game running completely?

I hate to think of the trouble I'm going to have when I want to play the rest of the series, as well as Deus Ex and System Shock 2 (which I have on disc).
the codec stuff is a messy thing, some people report success with one thing, others with something completely different. my personal favorite is cccp (and making sure nothing else is installed). this has never failed me (no additional tweaking was necessary).

as for deus ex, all you should need is the new renderer and there should be no issues at all (the glory of having the source code to the renderer available).

ss2tool should lessen the pain for system shock2, but the issue with cutscenes will remain.

What is this cccp? Make sure what isn't installed? Other codecs?
How do I go about getting all this working now?

I have lots of problems with Deus Ex, and did try a renderer and the NVTextures and neither solved the problems in my game.
I'm willing to take another stab at it soon - I just want at least one game working before then.

There will be issues with cutscenes there as well?

Same engine and data structure. Mind, unlike Thief, there are only 3 plot-relevant cutscenes in the entire SS2 and that's basically a spread out intro and the ending.
true.

no other codecs (like divx) or codec packs (like klite) must be installed, that means you will have to open you add/remove programs panel and try to find and uninstall everything that could cause a conflict. if you know you have no old codecs or codecs packs on your system, you should be good with just installing cccp.

So I was looking up other ways to fix and running the game as administrator came up.
So I selected that in the properties tab of the launcher?

It just broke the game agian on me, now it will only play in windowed mode, it was telling me I don't have anything higher than dirextx 6 installed.

Well, I opened Add/remove programs list and took a look for those two. I don't see those them, but would there be any others?

I'll reinstall the game and patch it again later. Then maybe try this codec pack you linked.

What do I do if that doesn't work?

Oh, aand I came across a topic where someone was linked this: http://www.gamefront.com/files/iv5setupexe/;3773016;/fileinfo.html

and they were told it's the codec the game requires.. Thoughts?

yes, running the game as admin is required, this has been mentioned in the first post and in many other posts as well (that means run either thief1.exe or thiefg.exe in admin mode. no launchers, that will run the old exe from gog).

that old codec from gamefront will probably not even install on windows7. as I said, removing all old codecs and installing cccp is probably the best you can do.

It was the shortcut for the ThiefG.exe that I went through.
And yeah, caused me issues.

Okay, I don't know if theres any other codecs, bvut I'll look and try installing cccp later.
Look, I'm probably going to feel stupid here, but I can't find the readme to manually install tgfix. What do I do?
1.08 is out fresh from the oven, just get that - an installer has been added, so the process should be as painless as it gets. the readme is right in the archive, together with the installer and the hdradeon fix (left that one as standalone).
