If you'd like to try out the games before purchasing, free demos of Thief and Thief2 are available (they include the engine and graphics updates).

TFix now uses NewDark (v1.26), the amazing patch for dark engine based games.

I have compiled together the most important T1/TG fixes into one installer, so if you want to have better graphics/more mission fixes, go ahead and try it out (works for the regular and the GOG version, but do note that you are using it on your own risk).

!!! IMPORTANT !!!
-you will need the latest DirectX9 redist (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109) and VC++2008, the game will NOT run unless you have them installed - most pcs should already have them installed, but no harm in double checking.

Download the latest TFix here

fixes/adds:
-widescreen, portrait resolutions, and Eyefinity support (NewDark)
-full 32bit rendering, fixes issues with new graphics hardware (NewDark)
-no more issues with cutscenes not playing (NewDark)
-no more issues with graphics related crashes and error messages (NewDark)
-no more resolution switching when entering menu or maps (NewDark)
-enhanced object models, textures and more (EP)
-improved models (hand/bow/sword, guards and more)
-improved water (t2 water)
-enhanced skies (static and dynamic)
-makes the game portable, so it can be moved around your hdd freely, and played from an usb thumb drive for example
-includes fixed missions (corrected object locations, texture alignment, sound propagation, broken triggers etc)

notes:
-requires win2000 or newer to run, latest DirectX9 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109) and VC++2008 redistributable.
-do not set any compatibility modes on the exe, this will break the game
-installing the game to a protected folder (windows, program files etc) may result in strange and broken behaviour (vista/win7)
-OpenAL might cause the game to not launch. uninstall it if necessary.
-you might need to reboot after you are done with everything (vista/win7)

final note: this is a collection of patches and fixes made by many fans - I did not make any of them,
I just made the necessary edits and corrections to make it all work together.

Well, I think ddfix is enough (more resolution options including widescreen ones, no resolution switching, issues with multycore and newer graphic cards). And it is working for gog-version. I checked. And yeah, ddifx is able to work with WinXP.

Other than that... Well, matter of taste. I see no point in models and textures from T2, but hey, You are grown man, if you want then please - install it without hesitation :)

Actually, one more thing could be needed. For playing movies:
Run as admin command line then typing these two commands:
cd c:\windows\SysWOW64
regsvr32 ir50_32.dll

P.S. Honestly stole last part from neighbor topic :)

Will this be the Thief forum's first sticky? It better be.
wait, you still need mods for the GoG edition? what resolutions does the GoG release support, then?

Up to 1024x768
the usual - 1024*768 via the ingame menu, and 1280*1024 and 1600*1200 via cfg edit. had a look at the GOG release, the installer is custom so no issues installing the game, and gog made sure the game exe is launched on just one core (that takes care of the lockup issue). apart from that, it's the good old regular thief gold, with all it's quirks and kinks.

short answer: yes, you will need ddfix to run the game reliably, especially on a modern dx10+ machine.

Not sure, but the GOG version only goes up to 1024x768. You would have to ask the GoG guys about that version (didn't know GoG had Thief, too, weird).

Edit: Wiki'd! You're unofficially official now, voodoo! ;) http://gogwiki.com/index.php?title=Thief_Gold#Patches_and_modifications

OK, let's see if i get this right:

- the base game - as it was originally released - works fine as GoG provides it.
- if i want to play in a higher resolution (1600x1200 is my usual choice) i can do so by editing the necessary file.
- if i want further fixes i can install the fan patch.

is that correct?

For the GOG version, yes this is correct. I don't know anything about the GoG version, though. But yes, definitely the GOG version works in this way.

alright. if you have one of the physical releases on disc, do you need to follow additional steps to get it to work?

Yes, there are many guides in places like the TTLG forums to help you with the CD versions.
Sorry - am I being a bit dense here? That link just takes me to a google docs page and asks me to sign in as gypsyblingboutique@.....

Nothing to download? What I doing wrong???

hmmmm... I understand GoG wants to keep the game as close to the original as possible... but the widescreen fix and other DDFix corrections aren't really changing the game. The goals and accomplishments of those utilities seem to line up directly with the goal of making the game run on current hardware. There is nothing game changing about them.

Worst case scenario, I think that DDFIX and the correct DDFIX .exe for Thief should be in the "goodies" available for optional download... but really I had expected these to be built into the game GoG released.

I would like to highly suggest that utilities that affect current hardware (such as resolution and cutscene issues, etc) get added to the download list. It just doesn't seem right to have to leave the GoG site to get widescreen support. There just aren't many "modern" or "current" monitors that can do much at 1024x768.
Fantastic job voodoo47, now the Thief experience is complete

voodoo47: notes:
-does not work with win xp and radeonHD if the driver is newer than 9.4. requires win2000 or newer to run, latest directx and vc++2008 redistributable.
I have Windows XP and the latest driver for an ATI Radeon HD 3450, does that mean i'm screwed out of being able to use the one that allows for widescreen resolution support?
