XYCat, I didn't see your post because the screen hadn't refreshed, which is why I edited to add the rest. The Internet has some lag, and we have to live with the consequences. You drank deer semen. Bill drinks a couple more shots of whiskey, collapses and knocks you into the hole. "El... what?" he asks. The aardvark roars and hisses at you.

You aim the shotgun at the runes and pull the trigger, but nothing happens. It's not loaded. Keep in mind that it's a 20-gauge shotgun, and you only have 12-gauge shells. (Sorry about that).

You ask Bill about 20-gauge shells, but he's too drunk to understand you. He collapses, unconscious, into the hole, lands on the aardvark's head, knocking it unconscious as well. The position of the two of them form a ramp leading out of the hole (I'm beginning to think you never would have figured it out otherwise).
