Black screen or stuck display after a movie:
After a movie, be it the introduction or one of the short movies that are shown in-between the missions during the campaign, the game display may be stuck on a black screen or the last frame of the movie, while the sound ambience gives you a confirmation that the game menu is loaded in the background.
If you encounter this bug, switch to another virtual desktop (Ctrl + Alt + ↓ on GNOME 3) then go back to the desktop the game is running on. It might be iconized in your taskbar at this point, but when you give it the focus back its display should not be stuck anymore.

AppDB entry [db:old]

Wine 1.8, clean 32-bit prefix, run installer normally, click through the error. Do not launch the game yet.
No winetricks needed as movies are broken (updated codecs & playback code) in Wine with the GOG-2 installer. They are also broken for a number of people on Windows. Latest attempt by XSEED, Sara in particular, to get the playback code working for the majority of people. Another patch is expected at some point.
Whatever function in the included Galaxy.dll in the game directory (the game has Galaxy achievements) that's called every time the game is started attempts to connect to a hard-coded IP (seriously GOG a hard-coded IP?) for achievement synchronization. According to Sara this isn't intentional, but who knows how well the functions are documented. I also find this behavior offensive. Given we are running Linux we can just run it in a network namespace (do that) with no net access, block it with a firewall, etc, etc. In this instance I will show you how to neuter the .dll itself.
$ cd wineprefix/drive_c/GAMEdir
$ cp Galaxy.dll Galaxy.dll.bck

Run Config2.exe once to set resolution & other options, e.g. disable movies. Then it should launch fine via ed6_win2.exe.

If using PlayOnLinux, run the game from/create shortcuts for Anno4.exe and Addon.exe for the base game + Venice expansion.
How well does it run: Perfectly as far as I can tell with the limited testing I've done. Performance seems good (1920x1200 with "very high" settings preset).
Details: Tested with virtual desktop and CSMT enabled. Have only briefly tested single player gameplay & have not tested multiplayer, however other reports suggest no problems.

Wine 1.7.55, clean 32-bit prefix, winetricks d3dx9 quartz devenum wmp9, and run installer normally: wine setup_elminage_gothic_2.0.0.1.exe.
Click through the errors near the end of the install. Game works flawlessly. Don't forget to go to options a raise the volume.
NOTE: OS X needs additional winetricks.

rampancy: @rampancy
As an addendum to this, my experience on Mac OS X needed some extra tweaking. I first needed to install msmxl3 in winetricks before wmp9 would install correctly. I also needed to install xact_jun2010 in winetricks, too. Also, the game works best in Wine 1.7.55 (through Wineskin); in Wine 1.9.2 the game would crash after starting a new game.

Wine-gaming-nine which is basically Wine 1.9.5-staging with the Gallium patches and some other patches added in.

In any case, the game works fine under Wine-1.9.5-staging with CSMT enabled. I need to try some tweaks and run the game under my i3 window manager as GNOME3 eats up a lot of memory and this is quite a demanding game :)

I just want to add that if anyone still has invisible textures problems after following the AppDB instructions. Try adding a new registry key HKCU/Software/Wine/Direct3D/CheckFloatConstants (REG_SZ) and set it to enabled. That fixed the problem for me without even messing with any nVidia settings.

If running in Wine manually, run ./bin/XR_3DA.exe from the game's root directory.
How well does it run: Perfect
Details: Have not fully tested with this version of Wine but have done a complete playthrough in a previous version without issue.

On some setups users may experience microstuttering, especially around campfires - this can happen on Windows as well and is due to a change GOG have made (force vsync) to fix another possible issue. If you're affected by this then you can contact support and ask for the original files.

Tweak guide
It's worth taking a look at the tweak guide for this game: http://www.tweakguides.com/STALKER_1.html

In particular you might want to modify r2_sun_near_border in user.ltx (found in Documents\Stalker-SHOC):
r2_sun_near_border [0.500 - 1.000] - This setting affects sun shadows, however importantly altering this setting can fix a shadow glitch which some people see, especially at widescreen resolutions. Setting this to a value of 0.8 or 1.0 can be a workaround to resolving the shadow glitch.

Install notes: Needs native d3dx9_31 and d3dx9_37
Run ./bin/xrEngine.exe from the game's root directory.
How well does it run: Perfect (DX9)
Details: Played for a short while, no sign of any problems. Tested using enhanced full dynamic lighting mode (DX9). DirectX 10 mode currently does not work and will cause the game to crash (recommend disabling d3d10 and d3d11 so the option is not selectable)... still, this is probably for the best - on Windows Clear Sky has been known to have stability issues when running in DX10 mode.

If using an AMD GPU then you should disable sun rays as they are bugged & will cause the sky to become very bright.

Decline when the installer asks if you want to install DirectX.
Run the game from/create a shortcut for "JadeEmpire.exe".
How well does it run: Perfect
Details: Have only tested it for a short time but there were no obvious problems and it seems to run great, as long as CSMT is disabled - if CSMT is enabled then the game will stutter and certain parts of it will load very slowly. In addition, I tested this briefly on a system with Intel graphics and found that it would crash immediately unless a virtual desktop was set.

If running the game with virtual desktop enabled, you must also set "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows".

The game's configuration tool has a habit of crashing; it's recommended to edit JadeEmpire.ini manually to set anything that can't be configured ingame.
