DieRuhe: I'm schizoid, and how people perceive me is really of no interest to me. The good thing about it is I generally don't care. I can fake it, and I can mirror well enough to "fit in" if I feel it's necessary, but when all is said and done, I much prefer to just avoid people altogether. I'm sure this may sometimes make people think I'm "aloof" or "distant" or "cold" or "emotionless" (I get that last one a lot), but as I said - so what? :-) I can beat you to death with writing, but actually speaking to someone? No thank you.

grimgroove: When do you feel it's necessary to fit in?
Well, perhaps not "fit in", but for example, at work. Being forced to interact with people all day long and pretending that I care what they're talking about (I should say that I don't work in an office, and that the majority of conversation is small talk), when in reality I'd be happy if they didn't say one word to me. So for me, aside from a few particular topics, being engaged in a conversation is "faking it". I don't care about sports, I don't care about the weather, I don't care about your kids or your pets, ad nauseum. Being around people does not energize me, it does the complete opposite. The only way I can "recharge" is to be by myself.
I've not yet encountered any hate such as has been described elsewhere in the thread but there are many people who don't like me for the fact that I am a member of the armed forces. In fact some members of my own family are convinced that I serve the Antichrist and will be forced to kill them. It doesn't help that I am a social liberal and the majority of my family are far right wing conservatives.

Some members of your family think Obama is the antichrist?

As sad as it sounds, they really do. I feel sorry for them.

I'm not a Christian and I think most of the bible is BS but recently I have come across Youtube videos made by Christians that explain why Obama can not be the antichrist. Showing such videos to those family members of yours might convince them they are wrong and make your life easier.

I'm the same way. Afternoons and Weekends I am a loner/shut-in to recharge my batteries for being around people. I fake the caring about people's lives, weather, and kids. I enjoy sports and computers and most of my cube mates know that and try to include me in those conversations and don't expect much from me for any of the other conversations. I think the majority of people can read people's body language pretty well (me not so much) and if they get to know you may find some things about you that you open up more for than others.

If only it were that easy, these are the kinds of people who think that all scientists are part of a scheme to discredit the bible by forcing everyone to accept evolution. One member of my family until recently thought all fossils ever found were fakes.

I have tried to explain to them myself why it isn't true (I actually happen to know a good bit of theology through university courses and my own study) but they would rather stick their fingers in their ears and go lalala instead of examining anything that might cause them to question their beliefs. Thanks fur the suggestion though.

I think you may just hang around the wrong people. Unless you are in a locale like Biloxi, MS where the city tends to loathe the military. I remember my time there where the ever popular bumper sticker, "Clean up Biloxi, Kill an Airman" was on a lot of vehicles around town.
You must get a little ribbing for being a liberal in the armed forces. I know there were very few when I was in the military.

I know who Melchizedek is so I have an idea where you are coming from. I once used that name for my priest when I played a MMO. And yes, if it is the religion I'm thinking about I can totally understand. It's hard to change anyone's mind when they are so devoted to their faith. They will find a reason to justify anything.

I tend to not talk about religion with my family, especially the devout Christians. A few of them whenever I visit during holidays ask me to go to church with them, but I just say no thanks and do not go into the spiel that I am an Atheist. That would not go over well with some of my family. Some of them know that I am either Agnostic or Atheist and don't push the issue. If they asked I'd probably tell them, but it's not something I offer. As for friends, coworkers if they bring it up I will let them know, but I don't go out of my way advertising that fact. Now I will defend my point of view, but I try to leave religion out of the conversation until it is brought up.
Thankfully, the family I have that are devout, are not assholes about it, except for the frowning on cursing thing, asking me to go to church, and praying before a meal (thankfully no hand holding and I am not asked to say grace). So, I either stare at my food for the few minutes of the prayer salivating or take a few minute nap during.

Yes, it was a name I created over a decade ago and it stuck. It deals with the fact that I'm in Arizona Wildcats fan and alumni, and that I live in a desert where it gets over 100 degress (37C) on a weekly basis, a few days reaching up to 110 (45C). I've gone through some changes since I used that screen name and wouldn't use it now. Plus I didn't know I was going to start posting in this forum when I created it. I'm not overly concerned about it, people can think what they want.

I just see it as a funny play on Cat in the Hat. I like wordplay.

From what I understand the Zerg aren't really fond of you either.
