Game: Battle Realms + Winter of the Wolf
Installer MD5: c3f1596701053bb4a455b46f7cfd964b setup_battle_realms_complete_2.0.0.9.exe
WineHQ AppDB link: GOG version
Codeweavers link: Retail version

Distro: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Kernel version: 3.2.0-104 (32bit)
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 4670
Graphics driver & version: Proprietary (fglrx)
Wine version(s) tested: Wine 1.6

Install notes: Just install & play. I had to set Direct3D OffscreenRenderingMode to "pbuffer" using regedit.
How well does it run: Almost perfect
Details: Everything in the game showed upside down until I changed OffscreenRenderingMode to "pbuffer" (was previously set to "backbuffer"). Tested with virtual desktop enabled. Game works without, showing fullscreen, but Unity UI annoyingly overlaps it on the edges.

Install notes: I installed the game on a (naturally) 32-bit clean prefix. Selected Windows version is XP.
The installer took some time and there were the usual failure messages at the end, but game's installation was successful.

The game does not launch with the version of Visual C++ installed by the GOG installer. It needs to force install vcrun2010 (as it appears installed already)
winetricks --force -q vcrun2010

For me it started without sound. To fix the problem install directx from the game's InstallUtils folder:
~/.wine/drive_c/GOG Games/The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing - Final Cut/InstallUtils/DirectX/DXSETUP.exe
(First I tried through winetricks, but the problem persisted).

I haven't installed the high textures pack.

How well does it run: Perfect.
Details: I had an overheating VGA issue (the laptop turned off), but it has to do with my hardware and OS.
On FreeBSD my card is about 5 degrees (Celsius) hotter than on Linux when idle. It's not a problem in general, but in games things must be getting really hot!

Game: Saints Row 2

Distro: Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa x86_64
Kernel: 3.19.0-32-generic
Card: GeForce GT 330M
OpenGL Renderer: GeForce GT 330M/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 340.96
Wine version: wine-1.9.11 (wine-devel amd64).
WineHQ AppDB link: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=10149

Install notes: I installed the game on a 32-bit clean prefix. Selected Windows version is XP.
There was a failure message at the end, but game's installation was successful.

The game can be launched as it is, but there will be no sound.

The sound problem can be fixed by installing directx from the "The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing - Final Cut/InstallUtils" folder (there was the same issue in this game, and it can be fixed the same way). It installs too many libraries:

From Van Helsing's prefix on FreeBSD:
$ WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_vhelsing sh winetricks list-installed
Using winetricks 20160425 - sha1sum: a1001b0d30a9bb6ea33e9b4a7bdb9e8f4bb3bbec with wine-1.9.6
d3dcompiler_43
d3dx10
d3dx11_43
d3dx9
d3dx9_26
d3dx9_28
d3dx9_31
d3dx9_35
d3dx9_36
d3dx9_39
d3dx9_42
d3dx9_43
directx9
vcrun2010
vcrun2012
xact
xact_jun2010
xinput
Definitely we don't need them all.

How well does it run: Fine.

Details: I haven't played much. I just created a new character and started the game.
Everything seems to work in the beginning.

Note: The game does not work on FreeBSD 10.3 (i386-wine-devel: 32-bit wine-1.9.6 from ports).
Game: Saints Row - The Third

Distro: Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa x86_64
Kernel: 3.19.0-32-generic
Card: GeForce GT 330M
OpenGL Renderer: GeForce GT 330M/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 340.96
Wine version: wine-1.9.11 (wine-devel amd64).
WineHQ AppDB link: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=13853

Install notes: Install and play!

How well does it run: I'm not sure, if I could count the game as totally playable. There are some annoying graphical artifacts in my case, even in low settings.

Details: If I have my XBOX 360 controller plugged in, all characters in the game are invisible. They appear as they should, if it's unplugged though. So, play on keyboard.

Note: The game does not work on FreeBSD 10.3 (i386-wine-devel: 32-bit wine-1.9.6 from ports).

If you have tested a game with a vanilla Wine version I would prefer when this information would stay available. Unfortunately there are already a lot of games in this list which only have an entry for specially patched Wine versions (with no information why this special Wine version is required to play the game).

Distro: Xubuntu 15.10 (64bit)
Kernel version: 4.2.0-30-generic
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 670
Graphics driver & version: Proprietary 352.63
Wine version(s) tested: Wine Staging 1.9.3

How well does it run:
Most of the time just fine, although there are a few places where it is extremely crash-prone. Save early and save often. I made a note that it is likely to crash soon whenever a talking arcade game is present. There is always one near the entrance to Plaid Mart, and at least one minigame in the Bilzarbra and Tilly storylines feature them. Sometimes the game also crashes after playing cinematics, even the intro ones.

For the longest time the characters were drawn all broken. This was wine bug #6955, finally closed in wine 1.7.47.

Details:
Supports a controller, but crashes immediately if more than one is attached of if the single controller is visible twice (as it is by default). So run wine control joy.cpl and disable either the event or the js interface. I wrote further tips on configuring the controller in this thread.

1 - Yes
2 - Sadly true, it is impossible. It runs on RRT2 engine that doesn't support gf4. The best that can be done is this: http://i.imgur.com/3rGf1MD.jpg

You're probably talking about people like I who've posted about games with wine-staging vs. vanilla WINE. I'll be sure to include that information in my own posts going forward. In the meantime, if there's a specific game you would like tested in vanilla WINE, I'm sure we'd be happy to help you out.

Mostly as that's what they tested the game with. In this case the game runs poorly without CSMT. Which by the way is, slowly, making it's way into mainline Wine.
