Where magic spells doom.

Zenith, a tongue-in-cheek fantasy RPG with reckless wizards messing with chaotic powers, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 20% launch discount.

Say what you will about Argus Windell's snobbish attitude and outdated ways but the fact is the man knows how to spell. And that's not all too common in a world full of moronic adventurers, criminally overconfident wizards, and volatile cosmic powers. That's why, following a series of unfortunate events, Argus is forced to come back from his early retirement and help clean up the mess before the whole world goes the way of the complimentary cloth map.
Aside from his deep knowledge of the arcane, Argus can also swing a mean spell, when the situation calls for it. Which is good too, because as the story progresses, and the bosses keep growing toothier and toothier, he will need all the special combos, peculiar artifacts, and clever pop-culture references that he can get his hands on.

Get ready to kick some serious monster butt and scold some seriously incompetent heroes as you reach your spellcasting Zenith, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 20% discount will last until September 27, 3:59 PM UTC.

Thanks, I removed the duplicate and the page will update shortly :)

EndreWhiteMane: Anybody catch the protagonist's name? Gerard Riviera. :-)
That's not the protagonist, though. If you look closely, you'll see that Mr. Riviera is the one enjoying his bath while the protagonist is harassing him (still beats getting tickled by magical crabs, I guess).

muntdefems: Has anyone tried this game on Linux with Wine?

I've got a more or less strict 'No Tux, No Bux' rule, but I'm totally willing to break it for this one (provided I'm able to play it, that is). :P

Patsche85: I had no luck. I tested it with Debian 8 and Backportkernel 4.6 and R9280X with proprietary fglrx driver. I used playonlinux with wine 1.9.18-staging and 1.9.19-staging. I tried to install vcrun 2013, 3dx9, 3dx11 and dotnet 4.5 but the game always chrash while loading the mainscrren. Installation works and the 2 intro video, too.
But the game does not run jet for me. Perhaps anybody has an idea. Here is the output from starting the game from cli:

Patsche85: I think the problem is 3dx11....if I google that problem I have found another game, with the same message:

Here is the bugreport:

Hope I could help and I hope anybody finds a solution....
Patsche85,

The thing I've noticed with a lot of games lately is that they tend to have a DirectX 9 fallback mode and for some reason when you run them in Wine they want to use DirectX 11. So all you need to is disable DirectX 11 support in your prefix by disabling it in Wine's configuration utility.

Once you disable DirectX 11 in Wine, most games will simply use DirectX 9 and will play just as well as if they had DirectX 11 support.

avatar
muntdefems: Pity... :(

Thanks for the info though (and for the effort!)
The game more than likely has DX9 support but Unity games (I can tell it's a Unity game by Patsche85's terminal output he/she posted :P) like to default to DX11 for whatever reason.

If you give me some time I can make a test run of the game myself :)

muntdefems: So... does Zenith work fine if you force it to run on DirectX 9? :)
I would need to download it first so let me do that :)

As for running fine, it should as long as it's not like Necropolis where it would require certain D3D formats to be fully implemented instead of being stubs like they are now.

jorlin: Hmm, The humour is appealing, the fact that you are not able to swing the camera around is not. Savepoints?, I don't like those. As Breja already suggested, this looks like this game is desgned for the console.
JudasIscariot, nice hint about disabling DX11 in Wine. I'm definitely going to try that more often for modern games.
Also, be sure to try running some games with the -opengl4 flag like so "wine Game.exe -opengl4". It's how I managed to run Ether One Redux damn near perfectly in Wine :) Not all games will work with the -opengl4 flag but it's worth a try :)

There's my report: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_judas_does_this_run_in_wine_thread_v1173/post332

And I've attached a screenshot of my running applications in alt-tab mode. You should be able to see Zenith running :)

Patsche85: First: Sorry for only quoting muntdefems

Judas is right. I did not have the knowledge of disabling dx11 with wine so I have find this solution for disableing dx11 in wine

I've go this one!
Go to Wine Configuration
Libraries Tab
Type: d3dx11
Click Add
Click Edit
Set to Disable
Close Wine Configuration
If Direct X 11 is already on the libraries list, just select it, click edit and select disable.
avatar
Patsche85: Now the game works fine without any other libarys. But I hav always the problem that games do not detect my LogitechF710 gamepad. Wine himself recognise it. I tested it with

wine control
avatar
Patsche85: but all the new games do not recognize my pad. Do you have a solution for this problem too Judas? ;)

PS:
When you configure wine you can also enable csmt in the staging tab, but this is only there if you use a staging wine version. With that you have more graphic performance.
First, you don't need to type "d3dx11" in Wine's configuration menu :) "d3d11" will be sufficient as it should disable the program calling for "d3d11.dll", I don't know how "d3dx11" managed to disable DirecX 11 but hey, if it works, it works :)

As for your controller, try setting it to XInput mode as DirectInput, according to the official Logitech site for your gamepad http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/f710-wireless-gamepad, requires additional software "*Requires software installation for DirectInput mode." I guess you can try installing whatever software it needs for DirectInput for your Logitech but I have no idea if it will work.

Controller support in Wine is kind of the one thing I can never get working right but one possible solution would be to find a game in your collection that has an xinput1_3.dll, copy that dll file to Zenith's directory with the executable file then make an Xpadder profile for your Logitech gamepad and drop the profile into Zenith's directory where the executable is and see if you get controller support that way.
avatar
Patsche85: I am alsowondering why the game comes without linux support, because the unity engine allowed that. Perhaps it comes later? I hope it.
avatar
muntdefems: That would be really great. I got it running as per your and Judas' instructions, but even though my rig is well above the recommended settings, I get a mediocre performance. At 1080p I can only play it with the lowest graphical setting, so I guessed if I switched to 720p I could afford one of the intermediate settings. I was right, but at 720p the problem is that the downscaling is godawful and you cannot even read the dialog text.

Well, I guess it's the price to pay for running a compatibility layer. So yeah, +1 for a native Linux version, please!

PS: Graphical woes aside, I'm having a great time with it. I'm only 2 hours in, but there's been many epic moments so far. :D
What video card and drivers do you have? I played with the default "Fantastic" setting and I only had mild stuttering...
avatar
JudasIscariot: What video card and drivers do you have? I played with the default "Fantastic" setting and I only had mild stuttering...
avatar
muntdefems: I've got a GeForce GTX 650 with 2GB, which is nothing to brag about (it's certainly much less powerful than your 970 :P) but the recommended specs list a GTX 480...

Apart from that, I'm running the same driver (370.28), the same kernel (4.7.4-1-ARCH), and the same Wine version (1.9.19) as you do, so the difference must be the card. :\
Well, it was the only card available in a hurry when my 560 Ti died on a Sunday so yeah :P

I think part of the reason may be due to how the game is optimized and the overall compatibility layer is definitely not perfect in Wine as I tend to get noticeable lag here and there. In short, it's not just your hardware :)
