Attacked on Titan.

FLASHBACK™ is now available for pre-order DRM-free, 10% off.

As resilient as its scientist protagonist, the legendary platformer FLASHBACK™ returns in its 25th anniversary with an additional Modern mode! It brings a post-FX graphic filter, remastered music and sound, tutorials, and a Rewind function which should make your attempt at escaping Titan slightly easier.

The game will be released on GOG.com on December 4th.

Vault_Boy: Flashback (2103) is not a remaster but a different game, more like a reboot (think the latest Tom Raider games, for example). So much was altered from the original game... it felt totally different, and as far as I know, NOBODY liked it. Even Paul Cuisset is embarrased about it if you watch an interview or two.

So it makes perfect sense, to make available a cult classic like the original Flashback on modern machines for folks who didn't enjoy it back then.

Djaron: then you have me even more confused... because i remmeber playing the demo of it and i'm pretty sure i ended up replaying flashback old's first level in the jungle with same layout and puzzles
The level layout and general storyline and such weren't changed but the gameplay. You could move and aim freely which took out many of the interesting elements from the origianl (how to treat with certain traps or enemies, e.g.).
There was a 3D-remake of Flashback a couple of years ago. It was a pretty decent game, though I recall the fans of the original being a tad tougher on it.

I wouldn't mind seeing Cruise for a Corpse or Future Wars brought here while we are at it.

igrok: I have waited for Flashback so long... but looking at what was done to the graphics, I'll pass (unless we are lucky to get the original DOS version as a bonus). Seriously, how can it be so difficult to make a decent release of a classic game? Why are the companies so obsessed with bringing instead these ugly remastered versions?
We are!

In addition to the original 1993 game, this version includes a Modern mode, with:

Vomit-inducing graphic filters,
A dynamic range that's almost a point,
A brand new "Rewind" function that breaks scripting and isn't available where really necessary,
Tutorials to speed you past the learning stage so you get hopelessly stuck midgame!

I agree -- that 2xSAI Filter or whatever it's called makes the game look like garbage. You gotta have purity.

Indeed.

That is why I give myself a full blood transfusion every morning. :D

Okay that was stupid, sorry. Been that kind of a day. :P

Just make sure you use actual blood in future.
One of my all time favorite games, instabought! Also hoping to see Fade to Black come back as well. :)

Plokite_Wolf: Hope they don't forget the sequel, Fade To Black.

Fonzer: What there was a sequel?
Didn't know that, thanks for mentioning. Was it a good game?
Dunno, never played it.

And Heart of Darkness :)

didnt notice that clearly when i tried it out (it was 5 years ago though) given how short the demo was and it was the first jungle level, but yes, i can clearly see how changing the movement and aiming can completely change some of the puzzles and combat encounters later on in the game

still my main two points were 1) lack of disclosure/Explanation on what they "added"/"changed" in this 25th anniversary version (and yup, chances are that the rewind thing may break some of the event scripting) and 2) the graphics... if you do some kind of remaster, that is clearly NOT the way, and if you just rerelease the classic version, maybe let people choose which kind of "filter" they want (no filter being one choice) through some options, among more than just one filter of course, and make a video trailer that displays each one cycled on same scene/part of the game
(and 3rd bonus point was that, at least, on the visual side, the 2013 remake did some efforts)

The filters, well I am not fan. But I'll be glad to own this game once again despite the issue.

Fonzer: What there was a sequel?

It was abysmal

Matewis: Ooh I've always wanted to finish this. A definite buy from me, as long as it's possible to switch off that awful graphics filter.
avatar
MaxFulvus: This "HD" remake looks blurry. I'm not convinced at all !
avatar
fortune_p_dawg: will buy later today. hope that fugly smoothing is turn-off-able.
avatar
Aemenyn: Bit sceptical about the remaster (man, that filter looks bad), but nice to see Flashback finally show up here.
avatar
Lifthrasil: The game is great, but why did they choose that awful filter?
avatar
Zoidberg: These "modern" looks really look like shit. :P
avatar
ReynardFox: But as long as you can turn that crap off and nothing is missing elseways, I'd be up for this.
avatar
SpiderFighter: Flashback is terrific, but I hope "Modern mode" means that it's optional...
avatar
tburger: EDIT: Gfx filter is completely redundant for this game. Hope you can toogle it off...
avatar
toxicTom: Nice, if the dreadful filter can be turned off.
avatar
Telika: Anyway, as long as the original graphics can be toggled back...
avatar
igrok: ...I'll pass (unless we are lucky to get the original DOS version...
avatar
Painbow: You gotta have purity.
It is possible to play the game without filters.

ZFR: Serious question: why the ™ at the end of some games, but not others? Does it mean this name is more trademarked than, say, X4: Foundations or Creaks (the other 2 games I see NEWS released on the first page of General Discussion).
It's a declaration to the world that you're using a particular word as a trademark. If it ever comes up in a court of law you can use the first publication of the word with a tm symbol as your intent to use said word as a trademark. Titles aren't always automatically protected by trademark so it's usually a good idea to put a tm there to protect yourself in some instances.

It's also a declaration that your trademark is curremtly unregistered. A registered trademark is a circle with an r in it.

Panaias: One question, will the remastered version support modern gamepads?
I don't know, but since the original game uses simple keyboard controls it can be easily mapped to gamepad buttons. This works great with a lot of those type of old games.

As a matter of fact Flashback uses exactly 4 action keys so you can map all of them to your normal gamepad buttons (or use shoulder buttons if you prefer, like for drawing the gun).
