Attacked on Titan.

FLASHBACK™ is now available for pre-order DRM-free, 10% off.

As resilient as its scientist protagonist, the legendary platformer FLASHBACK™ returns in its 25th anniversary with an additional Modern mode! It brings a post-FX graphic filter, remastered music and sound, tutorials, and a Rewind function which should make your attempt at escaping Titan slightly easier.

The game will be released on GOG.com on December 4th.
I am confused and puzzled here...

I mean, it is a 25th anniversary ok i get it, it is ported on switch so that's why it comes out all of a sudden???

What i also know is that a different "remastered" version was published in 2013 (20th anniversary, so, i'd guess) by ubisoft.

I'm not here to debat or assess weither the 2013 version was good or not; i just state an obvious fact: this 2013 version displayed an blatant graphical overhaul. And controller supports too (as it appeared first on XBLA, Xbox Live Arcade)... Though Amiga and MEgadrive versions back in the days DID have controller support already :)
Which can't be that bad of a thing, given how controls were clunky on the original
(i played the original on amiga and megadrive as well)

So what do we have here: a seemingly hastily and lazyly filtered version of the very old classic, with some "ooooh filtering" and "oooh MODERN mode" and "oooh rewind feature" fancy words thrown in.

While the rewind feature sure may make this game less punishing than its original form, we dont have any consumer-needed information (especially for "preordering") about what "modern mode" ever means here. Plus it seems we will get stuck with the built-in filters and may not get a classic dosbox version as a bonus.

So why so many differences between the 20th and 25th anniversary editions ? and why couldnt they bundled both together (the 2013 remaster and the classic one); though for this one i think i know the reason (publishing rights related) and why the "TM" thing is here too, in fact...
Yet I am confused and i fail to see the point of such choice of "release" from the devs and publishers.

I may be nostalgic, but not to such a point, as i still have my amiga disk, my megadrive cartridge and both platforms still in perfect working state

As a consumer, i dont give a single bother about whatever conflicting copyright shennanigans people have between different publishers for same IP or franchise or classic game; what i am concerned ith is disclosure and information, especially when you expect me to blindly preorder something jts on sole basis of fancy enigmatic words without any clear explanation of their meaning, and releasing a sort of 'inferior" product instead of just releasing the classical version drm free and with some enhanced "launcher" to apply cool dosbox filters and parameters for people who are not keen on tinkering themselves with it (that i can understand though not in that boat myself)

Well, i guess it's... nice... to finally get a "classic" game added to GOG catalog once more, for a change, though i'd have liked a more "classic" version integrated in GOG store instead of this...
Yeah, I really don't get the appeal of the sort of graphic "upgrade". When you see a pixelized diagonal, you "read" it as a diagonal. When these "upgrades" transform diagonals into high-res wobbly lines, you just see it wobbly. What's the point, soothing the anti-pixel-art crowd ?

Anyway, as long as the original graphics can be toggled back...

Flashback (2103) is not a remaster but a different game, more like a reboot (think the latest Tom Raider games, for example). So much was altered from the original game... it felt totally different, and as far as I know, NOBODY liked it. Even Paul Cuisset is embarrased about it if you watch an interview or two.

So it makes perfect sense, to make available a cult classic like the original Flashback on modern machines for folks who didn't enjoy it back then.
In addition to the original 1993 game, this version includes a Modern mode, with:

Post-FX graphic filters, (etc.)
Looks like you can completely ignore the filters. They really look quite shabby, but as long as the original arrives with them, I guess this is good news!
Hope they don't forget the sequel, Fade To Black.
According to ogdb there is a German version of the game available as well. Is this correct? And if it is, will it come to GOG as well?

Edit: Has to be true. The boxart says "Handbuch und Bildschirmtext komplett in Deutsch" (Manual and Text in German).

One of my all time favourite games.

I think most people would be happy if they just released the Amiga version here.
This is the real deal !
Forget about that ubicrap remake :P

What there was a sequel?
Didn't know that, thanks for mentioning. Was it a good game?
Speaking of Flashbacks.

Anyone else having a severe one from Doc0075's new avatar? :P

Oh my god! I'm freaking out here. The hours I spent watching that show!

Serren: This is a good time to mention REminiscence, which is an open source engine remake for Flashback.
Thanks, that seems quite good. I wasn't aware of that.
I have waited for Flashback so long... but looking at what was done to the graphics, I'll pass (unless we are lucky to get the original DOS version as a bonus). Seriously, how can it be so difficult to make a decent release of a classic game? Why are the companies so obsessed with bringing instead these ugly remastered versions?

then you have me even more confused... because i remmeber playing the demo of it and i'm pretty sure i ended up replaying flashback old's first level in the jungle with same layout and puzzles
Speaking of which:

The game that fleshed out Another World style into a real entertaining experience... Was such a HIT playing on my Megadrive back then !
