@yogs - I do not agree at all to RVS is for losers as to me it gets people talking and gets things moving though most of it is banter and poking people (and getting the feel of players) there is possibility to learn things from it. *straightens shirt with big L on it*
Agreed. RVS may not be rife with information but I can use it later as plot points to determine a player's towniness. Also, is that light beer you're drinking Little Miss L shirt??
@Sage
Adalia is fine, and probably preferred considering the abundance of books in the game these days ;)

So.... so far we have a lot of pointless waffling and not much to go on. I think Yogs analysis of the roles is reasonable, as far as I can tell many of them are next to useless for town, in so far as they would turn out to be negative utilities. But I doubt that will stop town players going for them, and I hope some town player at least tried to get Vig...

Can't say I remember what happens to the other roles, so I'll have to do a reread of the rules as I was wondering myself if some of the less desirable roles may not get bid on at all.

No suspicions yet, firm or otherwise, but I definitely want the lurkers to chime in.

Oh and I suppose Unvote Krypsyn

HijacK: tl;dr
Really? In a game that depends on reading and analysing other players posts, you dismiss an extensive post with 'tl;dr' ? That is a very scummy thing to do. Sure, now you will say that it is your playstyle again and that you are just trying to provoke ... but not reading just because some entry is too long and you can't be bothered is still very scummy. How do you want to play the game, if you are adverse to reading longish texts?

Just now my RVS vote on you transformed into a real one. So it stays.

yogsloth: OK, so RVS is for losers. Let’s just do this thing.
Yay! Always good to see us move out of RVS. So, comments.

yogsloth: Doctor – for traditional reasons, but we must also be highly aware that this role could have fallen into scum hands. If Town has the role, it will play the usual key role. If Scum has the role, my first thought is to be highly cautious about a doctor claim – more so than usual. Scum could have sought the role to be used later as a decoy claim.
Love how you set up the scene in such a way to be able to suggest lynching anyone that claims doctor. Especially love the touch that you have it as the most important role.
Unless of course if you know that scum has the role, which does beg the question of how do you know it.
avatar
yogsloth: (Oh yeah, I’m Town, btw.)
LAMIST. In post 8 nonetheless. New record?
avatar
yogsloth: Role Cop – We already know what the roles are, so it doesn't benefit Town too much, other than perhaps to find the tricky roles like Vig and JOAT. However, if I were scum, this would have been my #1 role to try and win in the bidding contest. Scum can use it to sniff out the juicy targets. If town has the role, be cautious when claiming – I would only do so if it has immediate and tangible benefit to do so.
So, not only do you set up the scene for suggesting lynching the doctor, but also for lynching the role cop.

The comments on the other roles do seem correct, though those may be to give credibility to the doctor and role cop suggestions.

yogsloth: Hopefully JMich - after puling about needing to argue for the last few days - will get off his duff and go get somebody. Would be nice to hear from newguy and Olen Ivka, too.
Well, I do dislike games starting during the night, since I can't contribute that well during the starting posts, but I do see that I wasn't needed to start the discussion.
But let's start the arguing, that is the most fun after all, isn't it?

By using his exceptional powers of deduction, which have always proven him right *rolls eyes*.
Oh, and one small request to trent and Pilot: please don't use the monikers Books1 and Books2 or variations thereof. It is confusing. Please use either the full name or unambiguous identifiers like adalia and wyrm.

I second this, I like to know if I'm being addressed or accused and not have to wonder which of us is meant.
So many jokes I want to make, but I think I need to squelch them for length. :(

The role bidding process seemed clear to me. Several people (I stopped counting at 4) have commented about some unsureness, so this next bit should help at least one townie.

<teacher hat>
The bidding process goes like this:
1) Everyone submits a bid, consisting of a number and the role they want.
2) People are ordered by their number, with uniquest, lowest numbers coming first, and with uniqueness taking precedence over lowest. In the event of a full tie on these two properties, RNG will determine the order of those so tied.
3) Roles are assigned to those who bid for them, starting at the top of the list. If your chosen role has already been assigned by the time your position is reached, then you get to be vanilla.

Ex:
Player A bids 1, doctor
Player B bids 1, doctor
Player C bids 25, doctor
Player D bids 12, vig
Player E bids 15, vig
Player F bids 4, Commuter

Players are ordered:
F (4)
D (12)
E (15)
C (25)
A (1) [Random number generator favors A]
B (1) [Random number generator favors A]

Roles are passed out:
F -> Gets Commuter
D -> Gets Vig
E -> Gets vanilla (Vig already handed out)
C -> Gets Doctor
A -> Gets vanilla (Doctor already handed out)
B -> Gets vanilla (Doctor already handed out)
No one bid for JOAT, so no one received JOAT.

Therefore, 0-8 roles can be in the game. If no one bid for any role, then no roles are handed out. If all 8 roles were bid for, then all 8 roles are in the game. If all 14 of us bid for the same role, then there is one role in the game.
</teacher hat>

I figure we've got 7-8 roles in the game; we have enough diversity in players to cause most/all roles to be selected. I'm really looking forward to post game, and seeing how the bidding went. CSPVG, please save the bid list (who bid how much and what role), and post it at the end of the game?

Time for an Assumption: Scum are intelligent.
Conclusion: I figure scum got 1-3 roles. They could chat during the bidding phase, so they could coordinate their bids to avoid any overlap. That gives them better odds, as a team, to nail at least one of the roles they bid for. Beyond that, we don't really have enough information to guess how well they did during bidding. Who knows? Maybe they didn't get anything, maybe they got all of their choices.

At the risk of getting lynched myself if Yogs turns out to be scum:
I can't be the only person who took a look at Doctor and thought "Scum will want to keep that out of Town hands". Maybe it is because he and I seem to think alike, but it looks to me like Yogs is pointing out what should be obvious: Don't discount the possibility that scum may have made a successful bid for this power.

Yes, but as Sterling says: "Phrasing".
Yogsloth said that

which makes me wonder how would we know that it's a scum that has the role and not a townie. I would have started with the fact that we should be wary of the doctor claim, and then explain that it is irrelevant of who has the role.
And do combine it with this comments about Role Cop. It does look like his going for the long game here.

Thanks for that, it is indeed how I thought the process works and saves me re-reading the wiki page about the game.
So technically all the roles may not exist, depending on how many of us went for the same ones.

I totally agree about scum, they are practically guaranteed to have got 1 role, but because they can discuss which ones to bid for they can also make a concentrated effort to go for the best / most useful roles or the roles that might make them appear most town (Commuter being a prime example, practically useless for scum so bidding for it might be used as a method to appear town).
I would imagine they will have gone for a combo of the two and went for some useful roles and maybe 1 town appearing role.

I do get where yogs is coming from, and I see why JMich finds it suspicious, but to me the roles I would be worried about scum having gone for are definitely Vig and Vengeful as they're pretty much guaranteed extra kills for them. However presumably some among town will have thought this and bid on them too.
While keeping Doctor out of town hands is useful, I think scum will have to expect that at least one or more townies would have gone for that, and I think they may have shot for roles with more of a chance for them to get.

But clearly any claim must be viewed with suspicion. While false claims are practically impossible (it's going to be a pretty lucky guess by scum to false claim a role that wasn't bid on) we have no idea who bid for what and why.

The power of the Doctor is overrated. The mentioning of it by both you and yogsloth is noteworthy.

Picking on certain people while ignoring others, Flub? You call out Yogsloth on it, that's fine, he brought it up. You call me out on the same thing, but skip JMich, to whom I was replying and whom also talked about it?

This is weak, and I'm hoping to see something better within another day or two, but for now: Vote Flubbucket.

I said that doctor role was overrated? When? Where?
Or did I misread flub's post as well?

Strawman.

JMich responded to comments. YOUR reply is what is weak. You just shot straight to the top punkin' and I'll be looking to see if yogsloth attempts to distance himself from your sloppy play.

Here's the context. Clearly there is a connection between yogsloth and Bookwyrm. Bookwyrm states it in his post "Maybe it is because he and I seem to think alike,"

You then have the audacity to put a vote on me?!?!

You sir are scum.
