There you are you magnificent bastard.
Time to pepper your angus. You don't want to miss the BBQ that I'm gonna do. There'll be lotsa booze and MEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!

AgentBirdnest: Thank you dd and tinyE for your responses regarding Commandos. +1 for both of you.
I think I'll pick up the sequel pack this weekend.
avatar
l0rdtr3k: And shotacon...
avatar
moonshineshadow: uh ok... now I completely understand your reaction. And now I have this image in my mind:
Girlfriend: "Let's watch some hentai together"
l0rdtr3k: "Awesome"
*Boku no Pico starts*
l0rdtr3k to himself: "Noooooooooooooo"
:D
This sounds like a genshiken discussion ready to happen.

Specially considering the love of yaoi among the female populace.

It feels almost prophetic that in response to the skewed homosexuality produced to appease deviant fangirls, GOG would put the original Leisure Suit Larry to counter "teh GUEY".

Get it, play it, feel your manliness swell, then shrivel.

Steer clear of the new ones though, they are steaming piles of dung.
Any ideas on how to fix my "Forum Replies" option? When I click on it I just get taken to a blank page. It wouldn't really bother me but I always have that 'unread' number up there staring at me.

FYI I did try a different browser but that didn't help.

Thanks.

Brazilian BBQ, I am so in.

IAmSinistar: I'm well stuck in the lava level now, unfortunately. I have a sense of what is supposed to be my next course, but no clue yet as to how to make it happen.
Does it involve an electrical/communication tower? Because if so, that's what stumped me at first. If it is, I could offer a non plot spoiling hint.

avatar
IAmSinistar: Overall the game is getting better since my last post. There are more strange wonders in the world, and the gameplay continues to be more engaging.
I does seem to get better as more of the story is revealed and the strange twists and plot developments. The mixture of landscapes is nice as well, especially the more bizarre ones.

avatar
IAmSinistar: My only real criticisms at this point are (1) the oxygen aspect is a needless story element, since it never seems to become an issue unless you are within walking distance of the next top-up, and (2) the transitions between areas are often abrupt. An example of that is the night level where you are struggling through the dark to make it to an alien building. When you arrive the scene fades out and suddenly it's morning and you are in the valley, the building nowhere in sight. Similar is the sudden transition from the hot springs to the volcanic fields. It tends to make the game feel like a series of vignettes strung together, rather than a continuous environment.
I agree with you about these two points. The oxygen aspect seems pointless, as it's never a real challenge to get there and it adds nothing to the story. I'm glad it wasn't a more integrated part of the game though, where you had to be careful of time in case you run out of oxygen. I'm not that keen on timed games.

As for the second point, I completely agree. It could have done with some cutscene, or a narration explaining that you have been travelling and now it's night (or transitioning from one area to another). Something as simple as a voice over during the loading screen would have done the trick. I wondered if the developers ran out of time and had to keep it short, or if this was always the plan.
I don't mind yaoi, hell I've read some. But the problem is because it's a shotacon hentai and it made my jimmies achieve maximun over rustle.

j0ekerr: Usually the tentacles are not exactly alien, but belonging to youkai, which are japanese folklore monsters.

It's an important difference. Like the difference between the Ordo Xenos and the Ordo Malleus. Although if you get involved with any of them, you're royally screwed anyway.

Now you know.

And knowing is half the battle.

The other half is bullets.
I won't even ask how you know that. ;-)

moonshineshadow: There are different kinds of hentai. So if you ever should become interested in watching one, check the labels out before to see what kind it is.
Thanks for the advice, but it's not something that I see myself looking at any time soon. :-)

Hmm... so you have the opposite kind of problem than me. I almost never get notifications for replies. So just give your notifications to me ;-)

AgentBirdnest: Good mornoonening, everyone. *tips imaginary hat*
Hope everyone is well.

Are there any big differences between Beyond the Call of Duty, and Commandos 2+3?
I've only played about 6 missions in the first game, and it's not bad, but it seems that there is only one specific way to do every mission, and it takes a lot of trial and error. It's starting to feel boring. Are the sequels the same way?
avatar
tinyE: BCOD is basically an expansion for #1 so yeah, there is a huge difference.
I didn't know that, yet another incentive to get to playing it right away.

I love commandos for two reasons.

One; it was a groundbreaking game that brought forth a number of new mechanics and polished some old ones to videogaming, enriching the medium for it.

Two; it was a locally produced game that didn't suck.

Unfortunately, I grew frustrated with its difficulty curve and got stuck, then forgot about it. It sits forver in my backlog of games I must play, bringing shame every time I see it remain unplayed.

It's annoying as hell. :P I have this big 6 up there. Three are updates (that's fine), one is a PM I made to myself (stupid), but there are 2 others I can't find combing the forum. Those two might be people DEPENDING ON MY REPLY BUT I CAN'T FIND THEM!!! :O

If the first games were too hard, try Commandos 2 - it's a bit easier, especially on the easy settings. Plus it's lots of fun. :-)

Sorry if this is a stupid suggestion, as you may have already tried it, but have you tried visiting the recent posts page? It usually shows me what replies I have waiting for me. Link below.

The inquis...I mean, one must be forever vigilant and prepared against the threat of the mutant, the heretic, the daemon...

But mostly, thanks to genshiken, which is a genuinely excellent manga in regards to its storytelling and completely SFW.

Fun-fact: the female-otaku oriented hentai, involves mostly male gay porn.

Then steer well clear of aki sora. it'd probably I consider myself an unflappable person, capable of reading pretty much anything with an unconcerned mind and a sarcastic attitude, my only reaction to a bad story a shrewd raising of the eyebrow.

Yet that shite still managed to make me rage.

That's the problem, I have been using that. It takes me to a blank white screen.

ddickinson: Does it involve an electrical/communication tower? Because if so, that's what stumped me at first. If it is, I could offer a non plot spoiling hint.
It does indeed. It seems like it has long strips on its surface that could be used for walking if it I could knock the tower over. Currently I am trying to climb it through timed jumps, but it is far too hard and makes me thing that's not the solution. Any hint would be appreciated!

Agreed. The mimics and the what I'm calling "vorticella trees" are pretty creepy. And initially the story seemed to start with hints that this is leading to yet another "you're dead the whole time" twist, but now it feels like a proper story instead.

I concur. I'd rather have it be a trivial plot point like it is than be a time-pressure element. I hate those in games, it ruins any ability to enjoy the environment because part of your focus is always on reaching the next checkpoint.

I'm not sure which it is yet, I may have a better idea when the ending is revealed. I could see where it would be done deliberately to create a sense of dislocation, but I suspect it really was more of just a development limitation.

Okay, I will try to explain. You don't jump on the tower as it is now. If you look to your right (as you look at the tower) you will see some lava spurting on another ledge? You have to go back around to get onto this ledge, on the ledge there are two boulder that you have to push to make the lava change to hit the tower, thus letting you climb it. Once the lava is changed, cover the new lava flow with the second boulder, and the tower should fall.

I just quickly took some screenshots to help explain it better.

Screenshot 1: Run back around from the tower until you are in the same position as the screenshot, with the tower in the distance to the right, and the lava flowing thing to the right. Do you see the ledge to the right? Jump there. It's quite hidden, which is why I never noticed it at first. I highlighted it on the screenshot.

Screenshot 2: Push one boulder onto the lava that is spurting out. This will make it change to the other end of the platform. Then push the second boulder to cover that one, and this should knock over the tower.

I hope this help. If not let me know and I will try to do some better screenshots.

Ah, sorry, I thought that you would already have tried the link, but I thought I would mention it anyway, just in case. I'm not sure why yours goes to a blank white screen, mine seems to be working correctly.
