The (pixel) art of war!

Wargroove is coming soon DRM-free.

She might be a young queen on the run but Mercia is far from helpless! Together with her new allies she shall wage war and try to reclaim the kingdom of Cherrystone in a dynamic strategy game with fascinating turn-based encounters and distinct commanders, each with their own personality and Groove fighting moves. Create your own campaigns with the advanced in-game tools, try the Arcade and Puzzle modes, fight online battles, and feel the charm of Wargroove!
We regret to inform you that Wargroove will not be released on GOG.COM.

Together with the publisher, we launched the coming soon page back in February with the best intention of delivering Wargroove as soon as possible, especially knowing how many of you were eager to play it. Despite continuous efforts on both sides, releasing the game in a way that we believe would be satisfying to the entire GOG community, was not possible. This is why we mutually made a very difficult decision not to offer the game and we will be removing the coming soon page as a result.

MartiusR: Quoting one of the Chucklefish team members (their official discord, nickname "Pilgrim"):

Sadly we weren't able to make multiplayer happen with GOG with the resources we had, which is a shame! We're a very small company, so these kinds of decisions usually come with a heavy heart as we do love the GOG community and ultimately had to do what's best for the game as a whole. We still work with GOG and have added a lot of our catalogue to their store and will continue to. I must stress, that the team over there are lovely, supportive and understanding, and I'm looking forward to continue working with the platform

Crisco1492: Was this recently? I still have trouble imagining that getting it to work with Galaxy would be difficult given that they have cross-play running between consoles and Steam.
I do know there was a ridiculous gap between the actual release on Steam and the announcement that it wasn't coming here after all. Somehow I don't think it took them 9 months of desperate trying to get the multiplayer to work, but rather they worked on the console versions after the Steam release and after 9 months they realised they'd kind of missed the boat with releasing on GOG. The buzz had died down and it was no longer a new game so they didn't think it was worth the effort.

As you say, they have crossplay between Steam and consoles which implies most of the netcode is actually their own. They didn't skip GOG because it was too much work, they skipped GOG because by the time they got around to it they didn't even think it was worth the relatively small amount of work.

MartiusR: About 12 days ago, so it's quite "fresh" information.
It's pretty much what they've said previously. That's the official story and they're sticking to it.

SpaceMadness: I don't get it....How to do these developers mage manage to port games to multiple consoles, but there is a problem with GOG?
Most devs don't want to be bothered to do the work to make GOG to Steam Crossplay function. That's why there are very very very few games on GOG that actually have that feature.

I'm not sure exactly what the details are of why most devs hate doing that. But definitely it's a systemic problem with GOG games that has been ongoing for many years.

GOG is going to need to address this problem on a structural level if it's ever going to be solved. Otherwise, if GOG continues to do nothing to address the problem (as they have thus far), then additional multiplayer games will always continue to skip over GOG in the future.

I don't know why GOG never takes any step at all towards remedying this problem, though. IMO they should have spent all the money that they dumped into making "Galaxy 2.0" into fixing their Crossplay problem instead.

Just wanted to add something - I admit that I've quoted those statements for informational purpose (like "this is coming from their team, it was relatively recent, so nothing has changed"). And regarding believing in it... Well, let's put it in this way - I personally consider what you've written as very, very probable. And I'm not convinced with the official dev's "explanation" :)

Truth be told, while I have still rather "not enthusiasthic" approach to the developer, I still really wish I could have this game released here. Mostly because we don't have too much of such games on PC. The only "other" one, which IMO is giving nice experience and close enough to "AW style" is the Lost Frontier - which PC version is sadly, available only on Steam. Great game BTW, played a lot in Android version.

But I guess that at this point if Wargroove will be ever reconsidered (to be released here), it will be like with many other GOG games (especially those from AAA shelf) - long, long after release, some time after the moment when it won't be anymore supported by patches.
And like clockwork I was thinking "This time they'll announce Wargroove coming to GOG for real". *deep sad sigh*

Me too. Not only did I fall for MartiusR's post a few days ago, but yours just now as well. :'(

:-( Sorry, didn't mean to prolong this ... cycle of sadness? dissapointment? At the moment I only have time to check on the weekends for game updates/news and therefore only saw MariusR's post today.
... On the other hand, maybe someone with the necessary power/skills will see that there is still interest and (suddenly, for reasons) get Wargroove here after all. (You can take away your announcements, but you can't take away my dreams or something like that, preferably something that doesn't sound so theatrical.)

Well, perhaps if someone sent this thread of sadness to Chucklefish they'd do a pity-release?

Don't know what a pity-release is supposed to be, but if that translates as singplayer content (no editor/workshop content needed for me) available, I'd be buying. But, that someone's not gonna be me. The only sellers I might (_big_ might) be inclined to chase down to make them agree to want to sell me stuff are those in the ice cream business.
And yeah, bumping the thread again a week later. Bad me, bad me. But I didn't have time... Well, I still don't. *sighs and hurries along*

You're just evil! ;P
Could you please stop necromancing this thread?
I fall for it each time.
