Be kind, rewind

Shadwen, a thrilling exercise in silent killing within a bleak medieval environment, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 15% launch discount.

Time stands still as Shadwen lurks behind a dark corner, wishing that the little girl cowering beside her didn't have to witness the brutal scene that is about to unfold. But maybe she doesn't. Perhaps there is another way to get past these guards, climb on that scaffold, and continue on her mission to assassinate the king. Before you execute any action, time stands still, allowing you to change plans on the spot and even rewind failed attempts. Killing might not be necessary, as long as Shadwen manages to stay hidden or use distractions, thus sparing young Lily the horrible sight of this muffled violent dance.

Put on your soft leather gloves, don your darkness-colored robes, and keep your murders quiet as you become Shadwen, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 15% discount will last until May 24, 1:59 PM UTC.

phaolo: That was a bit annoying also in the demo.
It would have made more sense to signal her to move, instead (isn't the kid a bit too reckless\fearless?).
Anyway, that weird mechanic added more thrill to the game, because you always needed to check (stop) her.
Indeed, but I thought it would be a nice option, to add some challenge/difference playstyle. I remember there being a slider for stuff like guards' FOV and stuff like that, weird that they just simplified everything.

Did they remove that too?
No scores, less config.. are other things missing?

MarjutFB: Unfortunately we currently can't add the level editor to GOG. Cutting of its Steam features isn't as simple as it sounds. We'll still look into this, but this is the current situation. Shadwen's editor is really close to the ones we published to Trine and Trine 2 in 2014, so making it separate from Steam would need a completely new build of it.
As I said before, if it's so tightly integrated that it's difficult to separate from the workshop then there has been some very poor planning & design (and a complete disregard for users on other platforms than Steam).

avatar
phaolo: I didn't know that Trine 1 & 2 were missing an editor too : (
Neither did I, it's extremely disappointing. As much as I like their games, I cannot continue to support Frozenbyte as long as they keep doing things like this :/ I bought two copies of Shadwen when it launched but refunded both as soon as I found out about this (good thing I didn't download it immediately).

Frozenbyte's support replied in a slighly more positive way:
We have gotten a fair amount of feedback about this, so I'm happy to tell that we are looking into this.
However disabling the Steam features from the editor is not as simple as it sounds, so I can't make any promises.

We'll see. Fingers crossed!

omega64: Why?
Do you offer the 32 bit version on Steam?
avatar
MarjutFB: At some point it was only possible to add one executable to GOG, and we decided to go with the 64 bit version because it generally runs better. I'm not sure what's the situation now, but this is why it's missing. And yes, Steam has them both.
GOG allows you to place any binary in the bundle, they won't stop you. But using 64 bit by default is a correct decision.

Phaedrus567: So, as best I can tell, my open source drivers don't support the minimum openGL4.1 just yet
avatar
MarjutFB: Yes, unfortunately most open source drivers don't support it which is why we don't recommend using them.
Many reported that game runs well on amdgpu (not sure if anyone tried it on Intel). But it seems that the game checks OpenGL version instead of checking individual extensions. May be fixing that will make it more accessible without OpenGL version spoofing with environment variables.

The war is on. GOG vs Steam. Too bad GOG loses most battles against steam. But the war is not yet lost.

GOG is like the little village in Gaul, France. Surrounded by the Roman (steam) Empire. But in this village they make a special DRM-Free potion that gives them super strength. This way they won't succumb to the Roman(steam) empire.

Well time to take another sip of that lovely DRM-Free potion.

shmerl: See this thread for potential workaround by spoofing OpenGL version: http://frozenbyte.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=27507
Thanks, I'll give it a shot tonight if I can. At t he very least, it will be interesting to know if there is a performance difference.

MikeMaximus: Weird, you should have 4.1 support with that card. :(
....
It seems that the only cards in the R600g driver that supports 4.1 are the 6900 and the 5800 (Source), which I don't have (running 6870s). So, that at least explains why it's reporting much lower than I expected. And this is confirmed here

While it is a pain in the rear right now, I'm not giving up on AMD just yet. I'm also going to keep a close eye on the Polaris 10 and make that my next card as long as it performs decently and real support for the driver continues (what I've seen so far has been encouraging).

(Note: I realize that sounds very fanboyish... I support AMD for competition and because they have a better open source track record. If Nvidia open-sourced their drivers right now or AMD surged in market share... I'd have a hard time resisting).

I just confirmed that, but sadly before I saw your post. I should have known you had a good reason :)

Regrettably, the lack of AMD support is killing my performance. I hope there will be improvements on that front for this game. Shadwen is as close to Thief as I have gotten in a long time and I really miss the gameplay experience.

Edit: Clarity

Lemon_Curry: I also wonder why the system requirements state the following:
Please Note: 64 bit operating system required to play! .

Plenty of other sources claim it's only required for playing the game on the highest graphical settings.
avatar
MarjutFB: We unfortunately only have the 64bit version of the game on GOG. So, the requirement isn't wrong.

The same goes for Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power (Steam & GOG system requirements attached).

Ah I never looked at the driver support for each card, just the cards themselves which show support for up to 4.3.

Maybe they can improve things, but I don't think you can really blame the game itself the bad performance with AMD hardware. If that was the case I wouldn't get consistent 60 fps in Windows on V.High with SSAA.
It's too graphically violent/gory for my taste. The object physics look cool though.

It's ok, in the future we can both hope no one but a developer would ever need to unless they were curious :)

That's true, I meant to imply AMD is lacking in driver support and special feature use (like Physx instead of Havok or something) sense. Their hardware is just fine (as indicated by your 60fps).

Linux drivers for AMD tend to trail behind Windows in performance (give or take the game/benchmark). And I've seen anywhere from 50% to 80% of what Windows is running, all(mainly?) due to time spent in optimization.
So it's not that they can't get them to work, they just don't spend the time on it.
No doubt, market share excuses, etc etc.

I'm expectant of reduced performance, and hope it will improve as things progress. But 1/3 to 1/6 the performance even on low details, that is just a bit much to accept right now.

Edit: Aiming for clarity.. keep missing my target.

MarjutFB: Regarding the level editor:

Thank you all for your understanding!
For what it's worth: you guys answered really quick (and positively) on my request for a Steamkey.

So - thank you for that!
And keep on making great games like Shadwen. *thumbsup*

:o)

Haha, that was pretty neat, +1.
me likey de orange. you got blue for the staff. orange for the developers. can I get a like a fuchsia-teal? on account of how awesome I am? the awesome people could have the fuchsia-teal. no need to decide now. think about it.

MarjutFB: Sorry! We are checking if we could do something with the Editor, but no promises.
Just wanted to say that I appreciate that you'll be looking into it. That's good enough for me to continue to support Frozenbyte, to at least know that there's a legitimate reason for the editor not being here and that you're going to see if you can make it available outside of Steam. Thank you!
