3 (possibly) bugs related to when Geralt is not equipped with any sword. I realize this is a relatively minor bug and I haven't really seen people post about it or being bothered by it. But I might as well just report it here.

Problem: When Geralt is unarmed / bare-fisted, he has 3 handicaps
a) He can't roll - rolling works with any other weapons.
b) He takes significantly more damage - see screenshot attached. I found that the damage received is 8x (or possibly higher) compared to when he is armed.
c) He can't finish off stunned enemies in one hit - instead he deals regular damage.

Procedure: To reproduce this situation, unequip all swords and take hits from enemies (Tested at 2 location with human enemies but not tested with monsters).

Workaround: None.

Thread: None that I can find.

Status: Still occurs in version 1.2.

Note: Screenshots were edited to remove spoilers. The first shows damage received when unarmed, the second shows damage received when armed.

I'd say the missing finishing moves are definately intended, since they would require additional animations. I also think that the inability to roll is by design, although I have to admit that it doesn't make sense - performing those rolls should even be easier empty-handed.

The part with the higher damage is quite interesting. That explains why those drug-making bandits in that cave killed my so easily until I figured out there's a sword to grab nearby. =)

Maybe that's supposed to emphasize the importance of weapons - after all, Witchers are trained in swordplay, not martial arts.

I've added the bug to the list, so maybe some day a dev might read it and explain the reasoning behind this handling. ^^

I think the issue was that since the state of being unarmed happens so rarely, the devs probably didn't pay much attention to it hence the design oversight (for lack of a better word).

About the finishing moves, I am thinking about the same thing. But I have seen Geralt doing one-hit-kills with sword without triggering the finisher cutscenes (on rare occasions though)

As for that particular quest, I guess the "intended" way is to grab your equipment from a chest quickly and kill the bandits.

I know that Witchers are supposed to be fighting with swords, but any regularly trained soldier would have at least some decent unarmed skills.
A minor bug this time showing Geralt running on top of invisible platform. Stumbled across while exploring the hospital ruins after Letho fight. Prior to Letho fight, I have already completed the Claws of Madness quest.

Here is a video I uploaded:

I still have RANDOM crashes to desktop on 1.2. Thankfully it didn't happen frequent but please fix it. Annoying.

prehto81: OK I have lost my temper and ragequit on a few occasions because when I press R to throw a bomb or a throwing knife, the controls stop working (only WASD seem to work but nothing else). This happens totally random btw...
Yep, reported this, but it isn't just the bomb/knife throwing in my case; every so often Geralt stops movin/defending/spell casting, he just stops at random intervals, and stays no matter what action key you press. "esc" key works fine for pausing and mouse works perfect, ut Geralt cannot act unless you get hit or reload the game. Mentioned this a few times. Still hopeing to get an ETA for that fix as its a game/deal breaker for me. Waiting for next patch before continuing as it is rediculous getting killed because action keys stop working for no legitimate reason.

a) I think that is suppose to be battle roll. I guess when you are unarmed, the game treats you as not in combat = no roll.

b) no idea why he should be taking 8x more dmg. maybe the devs want to speed along your suicide since you are fighting with your fists against steel swords or monsters :P

c) I guess geralt is not a monk :P I wonder if witcher lore ever mention bare fist combat.

This never happened to me until chapter 3. Now I can't proceed because it is happening during most battles. I don't remember if I hit R every time it occurred. i don't have an issue like this with any other games, so I'm going to wait for another patch (or several) before coming back; fortunately I have other games to play in the meantime. It's ironic - up until this point I was impressed with the overall lack of bugs compared to the original Witcher's release.
Playing Hard now on 2nd playthrough.. I agree on the irresponsive keyboard inputs. Throwing bombs, casting signs and blocking are all bugged.

I have to spam the keys repetitively sometimes to have it cast. And no.. i'm not running out of Vigor or anything. The inputs are really irresponsive.

Playing on Hard and with irresponsive keys is a matter of life and death within seconds if surrounded.

I would be more glad to see this fixed.

This is by far the biggest issue in the game and why I quit playing it. They have necrophages, nekkers leaping and attacking at twice the speed Geralt can move to begin with, but then blocking, throwing bombs, and using signs are all unresponsive, apparently due to certain contextual issues as it doesn't happen all the time - maybe 50% of the time. Gets you killed again and again. These, in my opinion, are game breaking issues. TW2 is a great game, but it's lucky to have gotten the positive reviews it did. Because on a technical level - ie; the game engine - it's a complete mess.

I seriously never have that much of a problem with the controls. I actually find the game too easy and switch to a dwarven axe to play now. you may get some delay when you roll around and casting signs and slash with swords, but not game breaking like you are describing.

I don't even notice it 95% of the time. I use a kb + mouse to play though. that could be something.

I started a thread here describing the Q key not recognize for ~1 second after dodge-rolling. http://www.gog.com/en/forum/the_witcher_2/keyboard_input_issues_sign_casting_blocking_dodging_and_triggering_medallion

Is that the case with you or do you face issues casting signs just running around / standing still?

I have issues casting signs and throwing bombs after rolling/dodging.
After installing patch 1.2 i can no longer select any languages using the "Text Language" drop down box in the options menu. Resulting in all the text to display incorrectly and you can't engage in conversations making the game completely unplayable.

No languages in the drop down box o.O!?

Weird, never seen anyone have this problem before. Can you check if you have "en0.w2strings" under The Witcher 2 -> CookedPC folder? If you don't have it, perhaps you can try it with mine here: http://www.mediafire.com/?1qe2sdye2os318j
