Fred_DM: well, finally.

the original CD release works just fine on modern systems, though.
If "just fine" means out of the box, at least for me it didn't on my Windows 7 laptop. But I could get it to work, just had to know certain things.

I think the main issue was that if you tried to play it with Direct3D graphics, the game failed somehow if you had any USB controller (like a joystick or analog gamepad) connected to your PC. I don't recall what it was exactly, was it that the game wouldn't work at all, or that it would run, but without any audio. Freaky problem though, and seemed quite well-known and widespread too according to my friend google.

Disconnecting the controller fixed that, but then who the heck wants to play a driving game without an analog controller? So the REAL fix for that problem was to install a 3Dfx Glide emulator like nGlide to your PC, and run the game with 3Dfx graphics option. Then it worked fine with the game controller. I played it with my Logitech gamepad, worked great with it. I assume the GOG version uses 3Dfx emulation too.

Also I recall some other issues, e.g. the mouse in the menus didn't work right unless you changed the compatibility options to switch the Windows resolution to 640x480, before running the game. And maybe some other compatibility options needed to be checked too.

And yeah, I finished the game with the highest difficulty. Try the same, people! I recall the "destroy antennas on top of high buildings" mission was probably the hardest mission in it, I was stuck to it for ages. The airport mission where you needed to jump high on top of the watch tower was pretty hard too, as well as the (last?) aircraft carrier mission. But that antenna mission... aaaargh!

jamyskis: Does it? Been trying for years, never had any luck.
What was (is) the problem? I recall I wrote detailed instructions here in GOG maybe one or two years ago, how at least I got it to work great on Windows 7. It was a bit tricky, and had to take into account several things (and install nGlide).

I can only vaguely remember now, but I do know that I tried both the nGlide and zeckensack Glide wrappers, had every USB device bar keyboard and mouse unplugged, copied all of the CD contents to the hard drive (including videos), tried various patches and NoCD cracks, and tried every compatibility setting under the sun. No dice.

Oh well, maybe I was lucky then. Or you unlucky. Hopefully the GOG version works for you.
Very nice, it's something I will surely buy.
Now that I remember, I think this GOG version might be superior to the retail CD version because at least on my PC, I preferred to disable the audio CD music tracks from playing because whenever it switched to a new CD track in-game, it would cause a rather nasty hiccup or pause to the gameplay. I found it so irritating that I eventually decided to switch off the lovely music with the retail version.

Maybe it was something on my PC/DVD-R drive only, but I presume the GOG version doesn't have the same problem as there is no physical CD to seek for tracks. I presume the music is now in mp3 or similar digital files, or does it possibly mount a music ISO file?
