Narrative in War Games can be interesting, even without zombies or aliens, I should say that I prefer SCIFI or TERROR on games, because when the plot is bad and dull, at least a monster or an alien can be interesting by itself. But still I played some wargames really interesting in their plots, Bad Company 1 and 2 are great, Operation Flashpoint or Spec Ops, among others. And talking about COD games I have to say that the mostly forgotten BIG RED ONE, published for Xbox and PS2 only (Not sure about CUBE) had a nice narrative.

Anyway narrative on games is overrated, only some games need a good narrative. Atmosphere and fun it's what it counts, a good storytelling can help a lot, like it happens on DEUS EX, or MAX PAYNE and sometimes a GREAT story can even help a not so good game, like for instance the first MAFIA, but there are many games that are good, and they do not need any Story, in fact sometimes trying to put a Story or Plot in a game is ridiculous, I remember how many times I laughed at DAI-KATANA conversations vs how appealing was the short, almost non-explained plot of QUAKE1.

And main characters do not need to Speak in games, not always, so I hope Gordon Freeman will never speak a word, they will spoil all that we imagined about him, because in games, the main character, if he or she doesn't speak, is letting the player be HIM or HER, that was the main motto in a different way (not show his face) for a character like MASTER CHIEF, with a helmet, without a face, because is YOUR face.

I really hate that all games now need to be like Hollywood movies, with a plot, characters with stories, and stupid spoken lines... even if I also love METAL GEAR SOLID style, storytelling on games is not an easy thing, and it doesn't necessarily fit all kind of games. Of course is the main attractive for some genres, like for instance, adventures, RPGs or Survival Horrors. But not even all them in some cases.

Because the developers cum publishers do not feel the need to consider alternative publishing channels.

They think that their own distribution channel (with more of authentication and possibly less restrictive OS options) is commercially best for now.

I can only say that the moment that BG (Baldur's Gate) became available at gog.com post Win XP, I became indebted. Maybe the precedent is an issue?

But just to be a little naughty sorry: where is GTA5?? After all, Kmart/Target should have it, at equal measure, yet I do not observe this one distributed here! ;-)

Granted some games are better without complex stories like Doom or Quake. Even Doom 3 had an average story. (boring SS audio logs and mail not withstanding) Examples of games that can mange a good story that you have the option to simply ignore are Marathon, System Shock 1 (your "Mission difficulty"), ROTT 2013, Painkiller and Painkiller HD, Half Life (barring scripted talking sequences), Tomb Raider 1-5, Duke Nukem Forever (yes, I went there ;) ) and Prince of Persia 3D (though POP 3D is really just a broken Tomb Raider rip off, fun as it can sometimes be.)

Yeah, is pretty interesting that Marathon, SS1 or Painkiller have good plots, among your other examples you mentioned, even if the story is not really integrated with the gameplay, but in Half Life or Tomb Raider it is better told as they use the levels design and the scripts for this.
ho ho ho

What's next, Nude raider patch, 73 Windows points? Rainbow Dash in Super Meat Boy, 31P Microsoft Points? ( If P is a roman numeral) Uncle Chan from JCA in Shadow Warrior, 12 Windows Points plus ONE MORE THING? A Big "Fucking" Gun in Custer's Revenge? NiGHTS in Psychonauts? Durandal from Marathon in System Shock 1 and 2? Dare I go on?
