darktjm: Today, I got a kernel panic from the graphics driver running a gog installer under wine. Repeatedly, albeit inconsistently, so I guess I can't update/install Windows games for now. My system gets broken in some way on every other kernel revision, mesa update, and/or X driver update, so you'd think I'd be used to it by know. Something broke inside of me this time, though. Maybe part of it is because I have at least 5 other critical breakages going on already. Maybe it's my ongoing anger at not having hardware documentation for any of my hardware (which has mostly been true since pre-AGA Amiga, which had the schematics in the users' manual and a complete hardware reference manual separately). Mostly, though, I'm tired of not having anyone to turn to when things go wrong. I'm tired of spending most of my time maintaining my system, rather than using it. I don't know why I'm saying this here, but it's not like there's anywhere else I can complain and expect a helpful response, either. Maybe the various mailing lists, but I can't tolerate firehoses, especially given that with the death of network news, people have lost the art of writing informative subject lines and reply editing. My bug reports just get ignored or replied with "did you try our latest, which has no changes that directly address your issue?" and require way too much effort, since I usually offer some sort of patch while I'm at it, meaning I've already fixed it for myself, anyway. I have wasted my last 35 years dedicating myself to these infernal machines with nothing to show for it.

I think I'm going to just go and take a long nap. Maybe I'll feel better tomorrow, at least until the next thing breaks. It's not like I have anything else I can do any more that isn't on my computer.

Edit: instead of taking a nap, I downgraded just my kernel (5.2.0->5.1.17) and the panic disappeared. I wouldn't have guessed based on my reading of the changes in the driver, but I guess some denominator is now being initialized to zero (it was an fpu fault). I probably won't investigate further or report it, because I'm tired of it.
Is it linux? If so then there's your problem(not linux but how tough it is to deal with such issues sometimes)

With windows(for me) it just works out of the box usually.

darktjm: Hilarious. Need I mention that when I switched from Debian to Gentoo, Gentoo was a more stable system that worked better? Or that "just working" is impossible (even for Windows, which the modern machines were made for)? I've used Slackware, Debian, RHEL (aka CentOS), Ubuntu, and Gentoo for extended periods (>2yr) at home or at work, and others for shorter periods. They are all crap. I have been using Gentoo for too long now (over a decade) to switch to some other distro without a very big incentive (I had used Debian for 6 years prior, but I had good incentive to switch, and part of that incentive is still there, so not likely to switch back).

I had a longer response typed up, but I don't really feel like saying so much.
I didn't know you actaully used Gentoo; I was just using it as an example. (Arch would have worked equally well as an example for this purposes; the main difference I see is that Gentoo allows more choice at the expense of package installation and updates taking much longer.)

Assuming you wish to stay with Gentoo:
* Try using an LTS kernel and sticking with it, only upgrading to point releases until you are at a time when you can deal with fixing possible breakage. (Also, keep your old kernel around until you know the new one works for you; Debian keeps the three most recent installed kernels, and that seems like a reasonable practice.)
* Avoid the unstable (~) branch if you want things to just work; said software hasn't been tested as heavily, and might break things.
* Does Gentoo have anything similar to the "apt-listbugs" package? If so, it might be a good idea to use it. (Also, if there's an "apt-listchanges" counterpart, that would be good as well.)

(By the way, is Gentoo's dependency resolution still horribly slow, or have they fixed that?)

Not everyone has that experience. For some people/hardware, Windows doesn't work well, but Linux does. (Case in point; low end systems, like that mini computer I have with 2GB ram and 32GB storage, run much better with Linux than with Windows.)

I know...I was just trying to show that for some(like me) it works fine unlike some people in general trying to say it doesn't.

Road brine in Helsinki knackered the rear derailleur of one of my bikes, so I'm going to have to take it to a specialist. Maybe they can revive it, or if not, just replace the whole thing and see what else the salty mud has worked its way into.

I wouldn't mind so much if the bike was more than about three years old. Granted, I didn't have the time, facilities or income to look after it properly while living in the capital, but I haven't even ridden it all that much. Luckily a derailleur is a pretty inconsequential part (looking at about 55 € at worst, plus the price of a decent service while they're at it).

Power went out today and stayed out for way too long. (That means no air conditioning, for those who don't live in climates where AC is needed.)

Are you in Chicago? We'd always lose power in the summer at least once, for 2-3 days. Very, very happy to be gone from there!

I find that fucking ridiculous considering electricity isn't that fucking cheap and it's summer so people need AC in most parts of the world. And these companies, do not compensate their customers for failing to provide the service they are being paid to provide for X amount of time...

It's govt's fault for failing to properly regulate utilities in the public's interest. If I had my way, public officials that violate the public trust would be publically executed.
