I've been reading about this game for a few days now and it seems to come along really great, in fact it's already been funded well over twice the original goal.

From the kickstarter page:

HONG KONG. A stable and prosperous port of call in a sea of chaos, warfare, and political turmoil. The Hong Kong Free Enterprise Zone is a land of contradictions - it is one of the most successful centers of business in the Sixth World, and home to one of the world’s most dangerous sprawl sites. A land of bright lights, gleaming towers, and restless spirits where life is cheap and everything is for sale.

The lure of a quick payday draws you from Seattle into the neon glow of Victoria Harbor… and into a corporate conspiracy nearly thirty years in the making. A terrifying threat looms on the horizon - a supernatural force that corrupts and consumes everything it touches. Dragged into the shadows of Kowloon City, you will need to forge new connections and gain "face" to survive.

Hong Kong contains fantastic elements for a new Shadowrun setting: an underworld of triads, tongs, and gangs to navigate, wild magic to harness, and bleeding edge cybertech to equip. Plus, Hong Kong’s culture is steeped in "guanxi" - a network of influence and relationships based upon a combination of social status, and prestige. All of these elements add up to a great new setting for running the shadows.

Speak of the devil, a few days ago I was considering starting SR: Returns from my never ending back log and then this.

So is this being released as DLC or is it a Stand Alone game?

Good. I like it more as a Standalone than DLC.

So its a sequal like From Baldur's Gate 1 to 2?
They made two Shadowrun games and can't finance a third one without passing the collection plate around over at Kickstarter? Do they need the money for a new game engine?

It's a Standalone game (Will not require any previous SR games) and will be a completely new Story.

The reason behind the kickstarter is explained here: http://www.pcgamer.com/harebrained-schemes-reveals-shadowrun-hong-kong/

An outtake from the article on kickstarter:

As much as the game has changed, so has the Kickstarter campaign. Shadowrun: Returns was funded entirely by fans, but this time the studio is funding the development on its own, and in fact Shadowrun: Hong Kong is already well into development. The Kickstarter campaign is essentially all stretch goals, although Gitelman said the studio isn't thinking of them as stretch goals so much as just "more stuff." Pledging works the same way as usual, with various tiers and attendant rewards, but the more the Kickstarter exceeds its base goal of $100,000, the more the base game will be expanded.

"What we're going to Kickstarter with is a collection of things which are outside the scope of our budget, that we think would be very cool to add, and if players do too, and back us, then we'll be adding additional features to the game. The game that we're currently budgeted for is about 12 hours and will have the same quality of gameplay and storytelling you saw in Dragonfall Director's Cut, but with this very unique Hong Kong flavour and a brand new story, brand new runners, and so on," Weisman said. "Depending on which additional features are added via the Kickstarter, the total length of the game could hit about 20 hours."

I have not backed up a game in a long time in kickstarter, but this, I might.

Oh, and you might want to add to the first post

Will there be a DRM-free option?

Yes. DRM-free through GoG and the Humble Store.

This is the first thing i've ever backed. Just to help them reach 300k so they can do everything they're planning.
I need to buy & see how good dragonfall is before even thinking about this new one :\

Dragonfall is amazing. Miles ahead in almost every aspect compared to vanilla SRR. It's definitely one of my favourite RPGs of 2014, one of the few RPGs to keep me enthralled into its world and characters in recent times since a very long while ago. If it was as long as WL2 and D:OS whilst keeping the atmosphere, dialogue and writing, it'll definitely be my undisputed GOTY.

Heck, it's universally positively appraised at the Codex. Says heck a lot about the game.

Definitely backing Hong Kong. Love HK since I'm from SG. Would definitely love the setting. Shame they didn't include any boxed sets in the KS, I was ready to throw my money for the boxed set.

"PC Only Release

Shadowrun: Hong Kong is being developed for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems only. We have elected to focus all our efforts on PC in order to deliver the best game we can without the current processing and memory limitations of tablets. This focus allows us to have higher-fidelity visuals, larger map sizes, and more stuff on screen."

HELL YES

I so want to back this. I am just a little cautious as I backed the first Shadowrun game and then had to ask for a refund after they flip flopped about having a proper being DRM free game and then bought it on gog when they decided that there would be a proper DRM free game

I really only want to get a gog key.

There is no chance they will be able to turn around and say that they aren't giving people gog keys, they will just have to be satisfied with Humble Store keys right? Right? RIGHT? RIGHT?????

I backed it and don't feel there's much of a chance they'll go back on their word. After all, the first two are here on GOG, so I see no reason they'd suddenly decide they're going to rescind the statement on their kickstarter page that they're going to provide a GOG key for those that want it.
They have passed a deal with Microsoft that explicitely said that all future expansions will be drm-free. It was in the KS update that annonced the GOG deal.

So, I don't see any reason to squeal on that one...

As someone who loved games like the original BioWare Infinity Engine games and Spiderweb's Avernum/Avadon/Geneforge series, I really loved the original Shadowrun Returns. While I'm not sure if I'd place it in the same category as PS:T, I definitely got the same vibe from the SR's storytelling style.

I haven't had time to fully dive into Dragonfall, but from my short time with it, it's even better than the original. It's pretty much Shadowrun with all of its original problems (the sometimes confusing and awkward UI, the linear/by-the-numbers campaign) pretty much fixed. I'm cautiously optimistic, but from their track record, I'd feel good about backing this KS (and I probably will in the near future).
Raking in $270k of support within the first day of its KS I'm fairly confident this will make the expanded stretch goals up to $700k. Well, I'm excited... and I've yet to even play the first two that I backed! Silly me.

Which was mainly due to the uncertainty what Microsoft would allow as they still own the rights to the Shadowrun universe. It's good to see that they've gotten a bit more lax with PC gaming: one reason why something like Dust: An Elysian Tale was able to be brought to GOG. Also notable is Remedy's self-port of Alan Wake to PC.
