Greetings, Hunters!

<span class="bold">Victor Vran</span>, an action filled next step in aRPG design, is available now for Windows and Mac - complete with GOG Galaxy Achievements, DRM-free, and 10% off for the first week!

In a genre that's seen immense highs and extended lows, it seems that we're always waiting for the secret formula for the perfect action RPG. Some say it's all about an overwhelming amount of loot, upgrades and treats galore. Others choose to experiment with new and innovative ways to connect their players, or to give them new types of control over making their character one of a kind. Victor Vran brings its own answers to the table.

It's a game that places movement and action first, truly putting the "action" in the aRPG, eliminating the boundaries of a traditional class system, and opting for freeform gear-based progression. A combat-oriented approach doesn't mean that Victor Vran is lacking in the other departments either - there's plenty of loot to collect and increasingly awesome weapons to find (including what looks an awful lot like a lightsaber) as well as innovative character progression. All that's there, however, is enhanced by an unprecedented movement system that will have you (and up to 4 of your co-op buddies) leaping, dodging and wallrunning. It's a game where survival is based on so much more than how hard you can hit.

yogsloth: Haven't read this whole thread yet - just wanted to pop in and express my disbelief after reading the game card -

Galaxy is required? Online check to validate the extra content? One-time use only?

Is this not the very definition of DRM?

I can't possibly be seeing this, can I?
Where does it say Galaxy is required?

Correction: Galaxy is not required.
Otherwise, you seem to correct. Welcome to GOG.

shmerl: Just avoid using this weird term (DLC). I use add-on or expansion instead :) Some not very bright exec coined the DLC term, and unfortunately it became too widespread. Just think about it. All the content is downloadable anyway. So the whole term doesn't mean anything really.
avatar
mrkgnao: You're right. I'll give it a try.
Unfortunately, I'm rather fond of TLA.
Well, some acronyms are fine, but DLC is really dumb. Since it doesn't denote the idea of additional features / expanding the original. I suspect in the past it made more sense when games were sold in retail, and add-ons were sold through Internet. But now everything is sold through Internet :)

Ashnak: Rubs me the wrong way that I'm supposed to enter my GOG-Login details in some third-party software, so it can call -somewhere- to authenticate. Why not just post my password on the forums, seems legit.
avatar
shmerl: That's a very good point. You shouldn't trust your credentials to third party stuff. Trusting a browser is one thing (and it has audit). Trusting a game with it (especially closed) is too questionable.
I missed that one. Do we have confimation that this is how it's done?

Because if this is true, we're talking of a software design blunder bigger than Windows Vista, coupled with a security one, and I'd be facepalming right now.

BKGaming: This is not DRM, nor even DLC really. This is content already in-game that is unlocked early (a one time use cheat) for buying the game. And of course a game that is probably good is going the be flooded with bad review for something that's not even true.
Why can I use it only once?

Well, you have to login in game to unlock something, one time only :
Digital rights management : access control technologies that limit the usage of digital content and devices

It's not dlc, it's access to content that you could maybe randomly get within the game ("Legendary", "Uncommon") on one time/character only.

it use your gog login and password to register that use somewhere (on dev servers I guess). Won't work next try.

Because it a one time use bonus for buying the game ... this is far from the first game to ever do this. Though it's more common in MMO's.

This is not DRM, and this is not even DLC. The content is already in-game & attainable. This is more akin to being given a cheat code that can only be used once to unlock high level content. Actually they should have done that, much less complaining would have ensured.

Because of flags.

Your usage is not limited, you can install, re-install and access said content as many times as you want.

Your in-game character's content may or not be limited, but that is the nature of games. Far from DRM. What matters is that content is still attainable by playing the game.

It is drm
*it requires you to authenticate yourself
*it only works once

same way as games with limited activation work.

Again, nobody would give half a damn if the word 'login' wasn't used. Login implies online and any game on GoG that needs to go online for anything (except multiplayer), whether it's options, extra, or a big banner that says 'You're great' is going to be met with 'sky is falling' posts.
The theme and genre are potentially interesting, but judging by the screenshots, this could be a rather dull and uninspired experience. I hope all those oversized spiders and walking skeletons aren't representative of the collective creativity ( or lack thereof ) of the dev team. Maybe it's just a case of bad screenshot choices.

Edit: Hm, just watched the little trailer. Reminds me a bit of Devil May Cry and the old Hunter: The Reckoning games on console. Perhaps a touch too colorful for me -- are there any blood and gore effects? Seems like it's just rainbow clouds all over the place. :P
it is not DLC.
it is 'one-time-use GOG.com-exclusive Treasure Key' to start your first game easier.
so you cannot back it up.

basically it is a gift (or cheat code) to counter the bonus you get if you buy the game elsewhere (Early Access Steam etc)

Can you play without authenticating online? Yes.
Can you obtain all content in game without authenticating online? Yes.
Does it really only work once? No, why because we can do this thing called "actually playing the game" to get the same thing instead of having it handed to us.

Calling this DRM is the most idiotic argument I've seen against DRM on GOG yet...
avatar
throgh: Seriously, GOG-Team? The game is marked as usual for being DRM-free and a Galaxy-account is needed even only for some features to be activated? So that is your so-called "optional game-client"? Keep it. I'm not going to support this game and developer at all.
avatar
Coelocanth: Hold on, where are you getting the idea you need Galaxy? You don't. What is required is on-line authentication of your game code if you want the exclusive content to activate. This involves logging into your gog.com account while in-game. Galaxy is not required.

That aside though, the DRM is not cool either way.
Okay thanks for the information. But just to note: Any form of DRM is no compromise. From my point of view the whole game should be removed from the catalogue in the current state. Also to mention: Where is the Linux-version?
