Update 1.2 brings Universal Cloud Saves, the option to fully customize the Client to your needs, and much more!

NOTICE: The update is now live for everyone. Make sure to check it out and tell us what you think!

GOG Galaxy, our gamer-friendly Client, is coming out of beta with a major new update that greatly improves and enriches the user experience by introducing many long-awaited features. Let's take a closer look at some of them:

The highlight of Update 1.2 is, of course, the Universal Cloud Saves. This new feature makes it possible to add cloud saving functionality not only to new games but also to titles that never offered cloud saving before. Thanks to this, excellent games like Planescape: Torment, Heroes of Might & Magic® III, or Vampire®: the Masquerade - Bloodlines gain the benefits of saves syncing and cloud backup for the first time ever. Of course, if you prefer to keep your precious saves close at hand, your data is still saved locally for you to use, while GOG Galaxy also lets you download a backup of your saves at any time.

This huge Update introduces the option to customize the Client to your needs by selecting which features you want to use. In addition, there is a brand new hibernate mode that cuts down on Client CPU usage while playing a game and saves resources as well as battery life when idling in the background. We also went through the GOG Galaxy community wishlist and packed Update 1.2 with some of the most-requested features, including bandwidth limiting and scheduling, FPS counter, screenshot capturing, a sleek in-game overlay, achievement rarity, desktop and in-game notifications system, a new chat, and more!

Steam is okay I guess. It's not that much of an issue anymore as much as it used to be. I'd say it's DRM done right. However, GOG is so much better and they always try to walk the extra mile for customers. GOG is a pleasure to buy games from and I try to support them by buying regularly priced titles.

My relationship with Galaxy has been an off and on kind of thing (been using it since the very first alpha version). I used to sometimes buy titles both on Steam and GOG and just play the Steam version. For roughly a year I've been almost exclusively gaming on GOG and I love it.

All we need now is continued support of the Galaxy environment + a couple of AAA titles over the course of the year (e. g. we gotta get Bethesda to release DOOM, since it's DRM is now removed). Once developers take notice of GOG as a valid alternative to Steam (and I think a few of them do already), they'll start to commit more time towards porting their games to make use of Galaxy features. Unfortunately it's a big deal for many if games have achievements on Steam but not on GOG, including myself.

Looking forward to using 1.2 and checking out the overlay. Thanks GOG and CD Project :)

almabrds: I've read that you can opt to not use it. So it's not forced down your throat.
Edit:
Yes it's optional,
this post confirms.
REALLY!? Thank you! For one moment there, i feared GOG would be like Steam! Thankfully, this isn't the case! GOG handles so many things differently than Steam does, ergo right and better, after all!

Lucumo: Will you be able to disable cloud saves? Don't really care and want a (for me) useless feature. The regular saves are enough.

adaliabooks: You can already, it's in the settings.
huh? 1.1.30 there is no such setting

You're welcome!
Galaxy now closes to tray by default when you click on X and the option to have it close completely instead is gone. Bring it back! Bring it back!

1.1.30 doesn't have cloud saves to begin with, so it's already disabled (and you'll need external solutions if you want to do cloud saves). 1.2, however, does have cloud saves, which can (allegedly) be disabled.
Signed for beta testing. But there is no new version, how can I get it?
Can anyone name a game in which the overlay actually works? Just tried a couple of DOSBox titles, plus Turok, Corpse Party, and Crysis. No dice. Also not seeing anything in the way of Cloud Saves.

Does "supported games" mean a whitelist of games for which the overlay, screenshots and cloud saves are supposed to be activated, or just games for which it works (DirectX 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, OpenGL, Vulkan?)

I'm seeing "1.2.0 BETA" in my window title, and the cloud saves and overlay are listed in the changelog. Also, the settings interface looks a lot swisher and tidier. But none of the new features are visible from my end, apart from the achievement rarity.

HereForTheBeer: Oh well, I'm know in the minority here. Just gonna stick with KISS.

eiii: KISS seems to be unknown in the Windows world. Unfortunately it more and more gets lost also in the Linux world and the (software) development in general.
Thankfully there's BSD. GOG, when will you release the OpenGalaxy client for OpenBSD?

Although I have never used BSD yet, I support!
Do the GNU/Linux versions of the games, which can be downloaded from GOG, work on BSD?
