I'm considering getting Eschalon: Book I while it's moderately inexpensive. Is the story self-contained, or is Book II a necessity?

Same here, but I'm hesitant to spend money on a less-talked about indie game; I just assembled a computer and because it isn't working, I will probably have to spend more money to replace some parts (and for the restocking fees).

And, to my knowledge, you don't need to have played Book 1 to play Book 2. New character, new story, etc. The website says as much.

Telltale Games:
Sunday is the last day to pre-order Poker Night and get 25% off of stuff. Release date is Nov 22.
Sam & Max: Complete Collection is down from $49.95 to $39.95.
Damn you, GFWL! You don't want my $2? I'd purchase that if they allowed me to.
Fucking "Coming soon: Unfortunately your Xbox LIVE account region is not currently supported. Check back with us soon as we continue to add regions". Xbox LIVE is already available here in Brazil, but the damn PC's LIVE/GFWL store isn't available... just great.
Also, it's damn depressing to see that /games is 90% or more focused on all of their console developed games, and only the last two or so years. That's what I call recommitting to the PC platform, oh yeah.

The book 1 is "conclusive" : you know everything you have to know by the end. Maybe a few leads to the book 2, but you won't suffer the frustration of major unsolved plots. For me the real frustration in this game comes from the slow pace - turn based fighting is really nice, but just traveling around IS tedious as your char walks so slowly. And yes, play the demo first for a good insight .

Only microsoft could make a 0.10 deal still bad. GWFL client needed, drm, and you have to register your credit card or else buy 500 points. No thanks.
Mirror's Edge Map Pack has either finally gone on sale or been permanently reduced to $4.95. Mirror's Edge is $9.95 but I can't tell if it's the new eastore price or on sale.

I remember that the first time I use Steam is to buy that shitty golf game that was mispriced to 13 cents; Now I have around 60 games on Steam. :P
