If I have to choose between one evil or another, I'd rather not choose at all – Geralt of Rivia

15 years ago, on October 26th, 2007, CD PROJEKT RED released the first part of The Witcher series, the beginning of the incredible adventures of Geralt of Rivia and his companions. Although it was the developer's first game, this story-rich, atmospheric, fantasy RPG received critical praise around the world and started to gather crowds of fans whose love for The Witcher’s world was either reignited or started anew.

And it is 2007’s The Witcher that allowed the series to later bloom on an absolutely massive scale with both The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and now already legendary The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.

In celebration of the birth of The Witcher, CD PROJEKT RED announced the REMAKE of the original title!

The project, previously referred to by the codename "Canis Majoris" during the studio’s Strategy Update earlier in October, will be a modern reimagining of the first part of The Witcher Trilogy. It will be built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 technology, and will use the toolset CDPR is creating for the new Witcher saga. The project is currently in the early stages of development at Fool’s Theory — a game development studio specializing in role-playing games. The team employs numerous veteran developers who previously worked on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. In addition, CD PROJEKT RED is providing full creative supervision. You can find the original announcement HERE.

It is impossible to express how excited we are hearing that news! But then again, incredible titles deserve incredible anniversary gifts! We would also like to pitch our part to this and remind you that you can claim The Witcher: Enhanced Edition for FREE!

In order to do so visit our GWENT Welcome Bonus which by subscribing to the GOG Newsletter allows you not only to claim The Witcher: Enhanced Edition but also a free GWENT Card Keg! Remember that in order to do so you must have GWENT in your game library.

But that’s not all! We’ve also prepared a Special Sale for all CD PROJEKT RED titles with discounts as high as 85%! This sale lasts until November 3rd, 11 PM UTC. Check out some examples:

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition - 85% off
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Game of the Year Edition - 80% off
Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales - 70% off
GWENT: Rogue Mage - Deluxe Edition - 30% off
Cyberpunk 2077 - 50% off

Let’s remind ourselves how The Witcher Trilogy started, while we await both new and remade chapters in our favourite dark, grim, fantasy world.
Maybe I would have preferred a simple remaster, but this could be good too. Don't leave W2 alone afterwards tho!

Also, please: avoid censorship, don't mix things with the series, don't follow the current terrible trends of altering established characters for diversity or political correctness.
modern reimagining has a lot of caution and negative connotations for some people. I hope they don't ruin the original. It seems un- needed and that they lack new ideas but I'll keep an open mind on it and see what comes out what I won't do is buy the 'same' game twice.

blotunga: Why remake something that is already perfect. I like TW1 as it is.
Many of us didn't find the combat to be perfect and new detailed textures would be nice

I understand we live in the day of remakes, where it is easier to play it safe than go through all the pain to write compelling story and rich characters from scratch...AAA game sector is pretty much bankrupt in that regard.

Modern reimagining however tends to have a rather negative connotation these days, esp. in respect to the source material (classic W1), which is pretty oldschool in itself. 3rd party dev team handling the remake is another flag, but let's see how it turns out. I don't think that cdpr can afford to piss off the last diehard fans they have (i.e. the Witcher fans), at least not after Cyberpunk, so there's some hope.

Btw I'm fine with the classic version, it has that raw charm, it's brutal and beautiful in its own way + it's devoid of the visual overload plaguing most modern games nowadays.

GOG.com: The project is currently in the early stages of development at Fool’s Theory — a game development studio specializing in role-playing games.
Specifically, they made Seven, which is sold here, but perhaps there's a reason GOG didn't mention that.
This game is a MASTERPIECE! THANKS! Hopefully I get a better PC or a PS5!
CDProjekt! PLEASE Don't change dialogues or characters! The best thing about that game is that they talk so natural, like daily conversation. They don't feel like written by a writer more like normal people! I love this game. I'm open minded to changes, because it's not the same product. But let me tell you that the uniqueness about this game are characters and dialogues. In Gothic Remake they tried to change it, luckily they said that they are going to be more "loyal" to the original.

Either way hoping for the best! Thanks for this new. The Witcher is a game that has not so much highlight and new players are afraid to play it. Such a good game!! Thanks!

I really liked the combat, it's actually a lot better than the new hype of souls like hit dodge, roll crap. In TW1 you could actually learn your timings quite easily.
AWESOME!!! Please don't let the shitty Netflix show influence development. Also: can I pre-order it now?

GOG.com: modern reimagining

Swedrami: Incredibly unfortunate choice of words there, considering what these two combined stand for nowadays.

And yes:
No uncensored romance cards = no buy
It's alreadly been indicated in the pc gamer article that they're going to do that.
I'd expect that it'll be brought up to current "standards", unfortunately

The comparison videos will be a blast.

The combat could use some updating. imo

Perhaps a hot take, but I don't think the original game needs a remake. Sure, there were some obvious reused assets and characters in some places, but it still has an undeniable overall charm, like the old Bioware RPGs (it is essentially an Aurora engine title of sorts, although heavily rewritten). Developing a remake will make people completely ignore the original game, which is a pity really. I still have very fond memories of it.

I was thinking this is more of a "Gondor has no king, Gondor needs no king" kind of situation :P.

TW1 was a regular RPG with a hint of action. TW2 & TW3 were action-adventure titles with a deep RPG pedigree.

As much as I loved the Witcher 3, the first one is still my favorite. I do not want any of its systems, whether it's combat, alchemy or dialogues, replaced with anything "modern". I don't want the story, the world, the characters or the ambiance messed with. I don't want to play Gwent in it. I don't want the erotic cards replaced with dull cut-scenes of CG puppets fucking. A remake has nothing to offer.

You want to remake something? Remake Cyberpunk.
No one is forcing you to play the remake. Play what version you think is best.

MarkoH01: This came surprising for me ... interesting but I am not sure if I'd want to replay the same story again. Well, time will tell.

What I find amusing though is the "get Witcher Enhanced Edition for free" part since to get it for free you will need to get Gwent as well (which might be the reason that some won't even use this offer because they simply hate to get things forced onto them and Gwent is a prime example for this ... no matter if it is good or bad, it is forced). The funniest aspect of this offer though is that it is ongoing since years now (google it and you will find the announcements - they never took the page offline) ... so not that much of an anniversary offer anyway. I am not sure but I think the game also once was available for free here without the Gwent requirement ... but I could be mistaken on this.

But I don't want to rant, the above is merely a funny observation of mine. I really enjoyed the Witcher games and it all started with Witcher Enhanced Edition which I got in a giveaway this community had done. So thanks for this, thanks for all the enjoyable hours I had with the Witcher games and happy anniversary CDPR and "The Witcher Enhanced Edition" :)

SargonAelther: If you go with #3, please add GOG achievements to Witcher 2, while you're at it *wink**wink*.

MarkoH01: They might do so when it comes to The Witcher 2 anniversary ;)
Hand up here, I hate being told I can have something for free only to find out I have to get something I have no interest in. I've never picked up a Witcher before. Hope it's good.
