If I have to choose between one evil or another, I'd rather not choose at all – Geralt of Rivia

15 years ago, on October 26th, 2007, CD PROJEKT RED released the first part of The Witcher series, the beginning of the incredible adventures of Geralt of Rivia and his companions. Although it was the developer's first game, this story-rich, atmospheric, fantasy RPG received critical praise around the world and started to gather crowds of fans whose love for The Witcher’s world was either reignited or started anew.

And it is 2007’s The Witcher that allowed the series to later bloom on an absolutely massive scale with both The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and now already legendary The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.

In celebration of the birth of The Witcher, CD PROJEKT RED announced the REMAKE of the original title!

The project, previously referred to by the codename "Canis Majoris" during the studio’s Strategy Update earlier in October, will be a modern reimagining of the first part of The Witcher Trilogy. It will be built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 technology, and will use the toolset CDPR is creating for the new Witcher saga. The project is currently in the early stages of development at Fool’s Theory — a game development studio specializing in role-playing games. The team employs numerous veteran developers who previously worked on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. In addition, CD PROJEKT RED is providing full creative supervision. You can find the original announcement HERE.

"modern reimagining"

Never mind.
Removing a little sexual content wouldn't be the end of the world. I don't think anyone plays "The Witcher" for sexual content. That's imho. Athough it's preferable if CDPR stayed true to the original and just improved the technical side of it, like combat and graphics. If they decided to change the world design and music, it could also be fine. If they don't screw that up completely it could grow on you with time.

But what one cannot stand and get used to is being preached to, being forced to see THE MESSAGE everywhere by butchering the story and characters. Just stay out of modern politics and forget the last decade or so when making the game. Wokeness is a fad. I believe it's going to pass very soon and it will be just an embarassing reminder for those who used to believe in it, especially for those who reflected it in their art, like movies and games. That kind of "art" will not age well. Those who have integrity and courage now will be honored in the future when sanity comes back.

Please don't mess this up, CDPR.

Agreed. Im fine with removing the sexual content although I know many will take up arms (See Mass Effect 2 removing butt shots in the remaster) because it would be easier to release on console. Sony is becoming very puritan (even compared to Nintendo) so its a small sacrifice for a larger potential audience.
"Modern Reimagining"

So I'm assuming they'll be putting Geralt in a dress to go along with the amnesia.

Mazixes: Keep the combat mechanism!

Syphon72: I swear this is only place I know that like old combat.
Lol. I think it was fun, don't you agree? ;)

I enjoyed it. It was... weird, fairly unique, didn't require "skillz" that other RPG players loved to tout. Hell, it's one of the few games I played at maximum difficulty and still managed to finish (and I suck at certain games XD).
But like Syphon said, this forum is pretty strange in that there's more people here who actually liked it than usual. Most other places complained that the combat system was "terrible".

But if the combat system was just a carbon copy of other game designs, would we have remembered it so strongly I wonder?

The combat system in The Witcher is original and fun. Also it can be tailored to the wishes of the player. Do you want hints or you want to play "by ear"? Both options are there.

Also, like Jeff Vogel (of Spiderweb games) has said often, most people suck at playing videogames, so yes, games that allow some space for mistakes and learning will always be welcome, in any genre.

Couldn't agree more.

Avoozle: The problem is that this remake will make the sequels (particularly 2) pale in terms of the engine and graphics used unless they are planning on remaking the second game as well.
I would imagine that if they're remaking the 1st game they would remake the second as well some time after the first remake.

CDPR actually hinted at this. They announced 5 Witcher games. We know the next witcher series will be a trilogy. Then they confirmed a remake, sorry - a modern reimagining, of the first game. And seeing as we're going to get a heavily remastered version of Witcher 3 either this year (hopefully) or next year, that leaves only one possibility, a future reimagining of Witcher 2 ;)

Hope we can get games that are in the same spirit as the existing ones. Recently, Henry Cavill, who knows the lore and respects the Witcher books and games, abandoned his role for the Witcher TV show because the show runners and writers openly hated and mocked the source material.

I'm giving the above example so that CDPR understands that this is the kind of loyalty and reverence expected of them for Sapkowski's and their own past work, like the one shown by Henry Cavill. Don't make alterations that the writer Sapkowki never intended.

Look at what Peter Jackson's genuine love for the LOTR books made him do. He isn't the best director out there, but he managed to create an 11+ hour fantasy trilogy that is nothing short of a miracle in the movie industry. Same respect for the original King Kong allowed him to create a remake that improved on the original in every way.

That's the key to creating masterpieces. Respect the tradition set by geniuses that lived before, and maybe you'll be counted among them later.

I hope we get swimsuit DLC.
I'm glad CDPR is remaking the first Witcher. I've tried to play it multiple times and gave up after an hour or so into each try -- mainly from technical issues. But with the way of recent remakes, I'll wait to see the final product before I get too excited.
