If I have to choose between one evil or another, I'd rather not choose at all – Geralt of Rivia

15 years ago, on October 26th, 2007, CD PROJEKT RED released the first part of The Witcher series, the beginning of the incredible adventures of Geralt of Rivia and his companions. Although it was the developer's first game, this story-rich, atmospheric, fantasy RPG received critical praise around the world and started to gather crowds of fans whose love for The Witcher’s world was either reignited or started anew.

And it is 2007’s The Witcher that allowed the series to later bloom on an absolutely massive scale with both The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and now already legendary The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.

In celebration of the birth of The Witcher, CD PROJEKT RED announced the REMAKE of the original title!

The project, previously referred to by the codename "Canis Majoris" during the studio’s Strategy Update earlier in October, will be a modern reimagining of the first part of The Witcher Trilogy. It will be built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 technology, and will use the toolset CDPR is creating for the new Witcher saga. The project is currently in the early stages of development at Fool’s Theory — a game development studio specializing in role-playing games. The team employs numerous veteran developers who previously worked on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. In addition, CD PROJEKT RED is providing full creative supervision. You can find the original announcement HERE.

Let’s remind ourselves how The Witcher Trilogy started, while we await both new and remade chapters in our favourite dark, grim, fantasy world.
Greetings to all on this forum and greetings, salutations and most important of super-duper-appreciations and congratulations to GoG/CDPR for enabling and making possible a remake of Witcher 1, hopefully it will have the Witcher 3 game engine as well as full controller support in mind before its released. A rare miracle indeed this announcement.

Thank you again CDPR/GoG!

I wonder how many characters will be palette-swapped to black and how many gay relationships will be added. Representation!
Ah Fool's Theory - The same devs that have released and abandoned their game 'Seven' on GOG.

Totally unexcited.

foad01: I like how people judge the remake before they have seen or played anything of it. LOL.

If it is similar to the Mafia 1 Remake it will be a good remake.

joppo: We have seen many instances of games being "remade" in one of two ways:
- either as a way of pushing some group's ideology to customers who used to love the game without it, now having "political correctness"/ "pseudo inclusivism" shoved down our throats;
OR
- as a quick cash grab done with almost zero effort, prices raised and the originals removed.
I agree with you, but we have seen many good remakes as well. So it's more of 50\50 thing when comes to remakes being good. Right now we can't really tell if this applies to the Witcher remake.

MarkoH01: To make it easier for GOG to read regarding Seven

Game outdated (and abandoned at GOG) for two years now.

GOG! Fix this. These are your "partners" and we are your "customers" who depend on you. If you are unable to tell your "partners" to update their games here as well, please explain, why we have to live with outdated games just because we made the bad decision of buying our game here. I am so fed up of GOG doing nothing against outdated games and I am sure not alone here. Maybe we should not buy another game from devs who have already an outdated game here on GOG ... or should we? Why?
Damn straight! 'Seven has been a second-class citizen entry on GOG for years and it's a proverbial open sore in my library because of it. It's time GOG stood up and fixed this - Steam got a "final update" to close a couple of bugs, GOG customers got snubbed.

What I hope for:
controls remain the same, or at least as a optional alternative
graphics & physics stuff get improved
new quests, beasts, locations and items
To be able play original The Witcher shortstory as a DLC (you the story which was in the intro, probably a futile hope)

What I fear of:
remade controls and user interface to be more console like.
Change in the combat system
censorship to make game more appropriate for wider audience.
The loss of Czech language support, especially of Czech voiceover.
Lots of bugs
Optimizations for nVidia graphic cards only (again), just remember that hairworks affair with TW3

A pass on the remake for me. I don't like "re-imagining" already good games.

Let's call it what it truly is: a thinly-veiled attempt to squeeze more money out of the Witcher IP. Play the original and enjoy it for what it is/was.

Games are forever following the movie industry's failings: if there's an IP, tear it to pieces and sell it down the river. It doesn't matter if the end result is completely unrecognisable as long as it still "floats".

Not all remakes end up bad, just look at all the resident evil games and their remasters. Sometimes in order to get the next generation of gamers to play some of these older games is to remaster them. If someone played the third Witcher first I'd bet it would be hard to play the first game that started the franchise. You can, and you may like it, but some won't like the controlls, graphics, etcetera. Just my opinon anyway.

The problem is that this remake will make the sequels (particularly 2) pale in terms of the engine and graphics used unless they are planning on remaking the second game as well.
The Witcher 1 is the best. You need to keep the original Combat system because if you change it there is no reason to do a remake at all. The original combat system still is one of the few aspect that you cannot see in any other games out there, it really is an original and good aspect of The Witcher 1. While the Witcher 2-3 try to make a bad copy of Dark Souls combat system like most modern games do.

Also the sexy cards collection should stay there... changing it with CGI is a bad thing.
Also dice game should stay.

Nevermind don't even make a remake, the original is already perfect.

PS. I got it for free years ago, I don't even remember how (it was this month 2013... and I got it for free buying another game Guilty Gear X2 #Reload for 5.99$)

I'm not sure why people are acting like they're being forced to play it. I still play the original resident evils over the remakes.

That usually happens if the first remake sells well.

I have consecutively replayed the entire series this year and concluded, that the first Witcher has much better look and feel, than its sequels. In addition, it is the only game in the series, which stays true to the books.

I'd rather see the Witcher 2 and 3 being remade in style of the Witcher 1.

Breja: I do not want any of its systems, whether it's combat, alchemy or dialogues, replaced with anything "modern". I don't want the story, the world, the characters or the ambiance messed with. I don't want to play Gwent in it. I don't want the erotic cards replaced with dull cut-scenes of CG puppets fucking. A remake has nothing to offer.
Completely agree.

The Witcher 2,3 plays nothing like the souls games and 2 come out before dark souls.
As long as:
- You keep the combat, signs, lore and alchemy system
- The character development system
- The romance cards

and as long as
- The game remains playable on Intel onboard graphics

I'm quite glad about this remake. Congratulations!
Another sale page where its not possible to buy from due to the format.

Thankfully I basically already have everything the sale would have.

Fix the sale page. Quit trying to force this impractical format on us.
