If I have to choose between one evil or another, I'd rather not choose at all – Geralt of Rivia

15 years ago, on October 26th, 2007, CD PROJEKT RED released the first part of The Witcher series, the beginning of the incredible adventures of Geralt of Rivia and his companions. Although it was the developer's first game, this story-rich, atmospheric, fantasy RPG received critical praise around the world and started to gather crowds of fans whose love for The Witcher’s world was either reignited or started anew.

And it is 2007’s The Witcher that allowed the series to later bloom on an absolutely massive scale with both The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and now already legendary The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.

In celebration of the birth of The Witcher, CD PROJEKT RED announced the REMAKE of the original title!

The project, previously referred to by the codename "Canis Majoris" during the studio’s Strategy Update earlier in October, will be a modern reimagining of the first part of The Witcher Trilogy. It will be built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 technology, and will use the toolset CDPR is creating for the new Witcher saga. The project is currently in the early stages of development at Fool’s Theory — a game development studio specializing in role-playing games. The team employs numerous veteran developers who previously worked on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. In addition, CD PROJEKT RED is providing full creative supervision. You can find the original announcement HERE.

Is the Professor still going to be full of shit?

Also, how are linereads like this going to translate?
Good. Always wanted to get into the game but it is a bit too antiquated for my liking.

You forgot to mention that The Witcher: Enhanced Edition can be claimed for FREE only by GOG GALAXY users.
I would normally complain about another remake, but honestly W1 is such a jank fest I hope they improve the combat. Witcher 1 felt like some kind of Neverwinter Nights 2 mod.
Im excited to see how the remake turns out. Good chance for CDPR to cut their teeth and get more people exposed to the witcher (it probably is going to be more console focused because Witcher is only for PC and it is old. With the praise for W3, there will be more eyes on this remake and if it does well, W2 is probably also getting a remake which is the one Im actually more interested in.

At least its a game that could actually do with a remake (cough Horizon Zero Dawn cough The Last of Us Part 1) and remakes can turn out to be good and provide a different but fun experience for fans of the IP with Final Fantasy 7 and the Resident Evil series.

I just hope the game is not super buggy.
Pfff, why force ppl into downloading GWENT???
I have zero interest in that game. I do not even want it in my library. Piss off.

Witcher Enhanced should have been released years agon on X360. This game belongs to that era.
Having W2 on X360 without the first game feels out of place (W2 is excellent, but first game is missing, so it's weird).

FU for making ppl download GWENT. I'll wait for true giveaway.
Fool's Theory in charge of development?
That's indeed good news
The Witcher 1 holds a special meaning for me. I'm at least very curious to see what will come out of this remake.

SargonAelther: Indeed. It also had one of the most realistic implementations of an inventory system I've ever seen in an RPG.

Carradice: Indeed, there is no need of a remake as of now.

Added later: However, if CD manages to add something to the experience, or at least make it more sexy for newcomers already spoikt by very high res textures, why not. Anything that helps.
The only reason why are they remaking it is so it can be offered also on consoles - the very same reason why they were working on White Wolf, but back then it got cancelled, as they didn´t had the money&supervision over it as much as they wanted to (good call, imho).

I simply hope, as I said before, they will stay true to original.
Battle system, although I enjoyed it, will for sure see the biggest changes.
Oh, and please keep the cards, ;) no matter how quirky they are, they are simply part of the game.

I loved the Witcher 1 so much I played it twice, didn't like the second game that much but also loved the 3rd as well.

The changes I would love to see are with the character models, every character in town looks the same.
The combat, although I liked it, it did have moments where it was buggy as hell, so if it's improved like in the witcher 3 I wouldn't have problems with it. And it does need to have many more armor and weapon choices because it does feel quite stale rather quickly in that area.

And the world was a bit too enclosed making it too linear so making it a bit more open and free roaming like in the 3rd game it would be great too.

The romance cards would be such a shame to lose, the art was great and censoring it would be stupid, the game is not for children enyway but at least give the option to keep them for those who liked to collect them.

Edit: I forgot to say how I Hate Gwent, I did get to play the dice game fairly often, but gwent I hated it so much I never cared to purchase any card.

Are there plans to bring back cut content like Scars of Betrayal/Outcast/Rise of the White Wolf/etc or is it just a plain remake?
*sigh*

Please don't follow the example set by Saints Row and transform a timeless classic into the woke garbage that is contaminating games today.

Please... ?

Yup! Loved them in KOTOR and Final Fantasy VIII as well :)

Let us hope they throw veterans a bone and add something like, unfinished content finished, or extra content that fits with the rest of the game, or some quality of life features, although I really would not think of anything right now.

Enchanted_Blue: It won't let me download it for free, is asking for payment? I went from the link in my email

elitetrader: Same for me.
Now it takes me to a totally different page, does it do that to you?

LiefLayer: The Witcher 1 is the best. You need to keep the original Combat system because if you change it there is no reason to do a remake at all. The original combat system still is one of the few aspect that you cannot see in any other games out there, it really is an original and good aspect of The Witcher 1. While the Witcher 2-3 try to make a bad copy of Dark Souls combat system like most modern games do.

Also the sexy cards collection should stay there... changing it with CGI is a bad thing.
Also dice game should stay.

Nevermind don't even make a remake, the original is already perfect.

PS. I got it for free years ago, I don't even remember how (it was this month 2013... and I got it for free buying another game Guilty Gear X2 #Reload for 5.99$)

Syphon72: The Witcher 2,3 plays nothing like the souls games and 2 come out before dark souls.
the point is try mimic that kind of roll, action combat system... Not really good and without any real difference.
That's why The Witcher 1 is so unique, and I love it.
The Witcher 2,3 use a generic action hack&slash combat system... even if it's not souls-like it's the same...

(btw you forgot that demon souls with the same gameplay was out before dark souls).
