If I have to choose between one evil or another, I'd rather not choose at all – Geralt of Rivia

15 years ago, on October 26th, 2007, CD PROJEKT RED released the first part of The Witcher series, the beginning of the incredible adventures of Geralt of Rivia and his companions. Although it was the developer's first game, this story-rich, atmospheric, fantasy RPG received critical praise around the world and started to gather crowds of fans whose love for The Witcher’s world was either reignited or started anew.

And it is 2007’s The Witcher that allowed the series to later bloom on an absolutely massive scale with both The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and now already legendary The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.

In celebration of the birth of The Witcher, CD PROJEKT RED announced the REMAKE of the original title!

The project, previously referred to by the codename "Canis Majoris" during the studio’s Strategy Update earlier in October, will be a modern reimagining of the first part of The Witcher Trilogy. It will be built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 technology, and will use the toolset CDPR is creating for the new Witcher saga. The project is currently in the early stages of development at Fool’s Theory — a game development studio specializing in role-playing games. The team employs numerous veteran developers who previously worked on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. In addition, CD PROJEKT RED is providing full creative supervision. You can find the original announcement HERE.

Timboli: I don't like jumping on the negative bandwagon, but why not just put all your effort into The Witcher 4
avatar
mqstout: Something like this could help the company get in to UE5 better and faster. They have the "design work" done, the story, and a boatload of assets (including from the newer iterations) they can use to do rapid work. Depending on the kind of remake anyway...

Of course, it's outsourced and not the team actually working on TW4; so maybe they're just looking to get that other development team experienced to farm them for new talent.
Perhaps, but I struggle to see the feasibility overall of that, plus it makes it a long road to The Witcher 4. And what happens if the remake gets bad reviews and acceptance, what will that mean for The Witcher 4?

Far smarter in my view, to take that little extra time learning the necessary ropes while developing The Witcher 4. Heck, they could even develop a taster or prequel, bit like an opening chapter or demo/prologue. Work on something smaller, that maybe won't be in the final version of the game ... maybe just a prototype to show off with.
"modern reimagining" :sigh: There goes my hope for any upcoming CDPR game.

More people need to pay attention and realize how bad of a sign this is. Take that abomination of a show, "Rings of Power", for example. After Christopher Tolkien died a couple of years ago, the showrunners fired their entire writing staff. Then the trailers came out and confirmed the fears. And now the show is out, and it's as bad as one could have ever imagined it would be.

These are big red flags. When they occur early on, you know it's gonna be woke 100%. Which could mean a lot of things, like forced racial diversity, LGBT characters, white people bad and people of color virtuous, women being as good as the best men at fighting and so on.

Earlier this month CDPR said that their next Witcher game trilogy is also targetting the fans of the Netflix Witcher series. It was reported just 2 days ago that the writers of the Witcher show hated both the games and the books! Let that sink in. And it shows. They race swapped Fringilla, she's black in the show, Yennefer is indian (and she's not even attractive), Triss is race mixed, instead of a white redhead. You also have black elves and and other immersion breaking characters of color, not to mention that queen that acts like a dude (a bad one at that) and who smashes brawny knights in hand to hand combat one after another. The only ones that are well cast are Gerald, played by Henry Cavill, and Ciri.

Even if it's fantasy, there are still rules set or implied within it that it should abide by. It is a slavic fantasy story, set in medieval Europe, or an equivalent to that. If you want diversity so much, just make a different story that could fit that. Nobody complains about Cyberpunk 2077 in that regard, because it's appropriate and consistent.

If one values racial diversity over lore, plot consistency, abilities and talent, that's racism. It doesn't matter which and how many races you prefer, it's always on your mind, to the detriment of artistic creativity that demands from you a completely different thing. Those that don't mind wokeness, if you have enough of it, it will break the story. We all lose.

I don't need an explanation for the wording "modern reimagining" from CDPR. I know what they meant. I just hope there is a backlash big enough for them to change course before it's too late.

I wish Witcher fans, both of the novels and games, were as loyal as Tolkien fans. Look how badly ratioed are "The Rings Of Power" trailers on YouTube, it's hilarious. They usually have about 10% like and 90% dislike ratio. Now "The Witcher: Blood Origin" trailer looks just as woke and trashy, and yet the vast majority of witcher fans like it. It breaks my heart for my fellow witchers. I mean even Little Mermaid fans hated the new "Little Mermaid" trailer that features black Ariel. It has on average 3 times more dislikes than likes.

Hopefully CDPR reconsiders, but we need to make a bigger noise than the woke mob in order to make sure that happens. If not, at least thanks CDPR for the masterpiece that is "Witcher 3: Wild Hunt". That success may be your downfall.

It's astounding! Time is fleeting!

Has it really been 15 years already? Congrats to the anniversary, CDPR.

I hope the remake will be as good as the original.

Madness takes its toll...
Waiting for more Witcher 1 remake news or teaser! ^_^
Here's hoping they don't improve the game with "Witcher senses" bread crumb trails.

LiefLayer: (btw you forgot that demon souls with the same gameplay was out before dark souls).
Demon souls was not popular enough to influence the game at the time. Souls games did not become huge until dark souls.

Here's hoping you're gonna keep what made The Witcher 1 good and build on it, rather than makin a reality of the fears already expressed by others, such as butchering the source material and hopping on the woke cult train accelerating to nowhere. Choo choo!

Must haves:
- Absolutely badass intro cinematic.
- Sex cards. And how about a modern addition to them with a gallery to re-watch the sex scenes playing a bit with room elements, the camera, etc.
- Herbalistm, alchemy and meditation
- Dice
- Probably the combat system. Tough call.
- All the early acts' content, they were close to perfect.
- I seem to remember the RPG progression and itemization being better than in W2 and W3. It's been a while though.

To be improved:
- Combat balance (oh god that wolf boss on certain difficulties...)
- Both main romance paths. The characters are nice but under-developed and the storytelling is a bit basic - Witcher 2 and 3 did so much better.
- Other romantic encounters
- Overall storytelling, though it was already quite good.
- Voice acting, although it was already good so you have to tread lightly and match the style.

Can be reworked a lot without causing damage:
- Graphics, environments, map layouts (up to a point, but imagine a Novigrad-quality city or better instead of what Witcher 1 had!)

[SPOILERS]
Wait, the ending was complete garbage now that I think of it, and the whole time travel thing barely made sense. The rest of the game was so good that I still liked it overall, but it was a close save. Can't say I particularly enjoyed the presence of the unstable kid and the fanatical Order, either. I think they could actually completely rewrite that part without damaging the rest of the game. But given the whole remake/reimagining thing, I guess they'll be afraid of modifying too much there. Too bad since there's the opportunity to tell a much better story based on the great beginning and mid-point.
[/SPOILERS]

Yup, better listen to Geralt. You'll have a lot of lesser and greater evils to steer clear from as you approach this remake.

Congrats for the remake!
Keep the combat mechanism!
Happy 15! Thank you for the game.

Mazixes: Keep the combat mechanism!
I swear this is only place I know that like old combat.
Just agreed with other users here that worries this remake is going to be a woke-lgbtqwerty remake. Please remain faithful to the original. Do not ruin an already near perfect game.

This is ironically what Kingdom Hearts did in preparation for 3. The original team that created 2FM which is considered the best in the series was disbanded (people moved around) and the new team honestly isnt that good with action games so they used the remasters of 1 and 2 for Playstation 3 and 4 as well as a demo with 0.2 to get ready for the new entry. The entry still honestly wasnt that good and it wasnt until the DLC that the team showed they could do good work (issues with guard and finisher i-frames, too many enemies, damage scaling and floors, etc.) but it could have been worse without that practice. Since some senior developers that worked on the Witcher 3 left CDPR, its not a bad idea for them to cut their teeth on a relatively less risky project. Given the fact that the Witcher IP also isnt the juggernaut it is now and people refuse to play old games/cant even access Witcher 1 on console; its a good game to consider remaking.

The very tricky thing CDPR is going to have to manage is what changes/if any should be made to this remake. 1 and 2 are more RPG focused compared to 3 and like it or not, modern gamers are expecting more actionized games and games are being pressured to be more action-oriented (FF7 moving from pure RPG to action RPG, KOTOR remake rumored to be more action focused, general belief that traditional RPGs are dead despite Persona 5 and Yakuza 8 showing contrary). While a pure "remake in name only" (essentially remake the witcher 1 game retaining all mechanisms but better graphics through the unreal engine) would be enough to please fans, you know game reviewers will bitch about how this new game has "outdated controls" and lambast CDPR. Newer fans who entered with Witcher 3 are also going to be expecting a game "like the Witcher 3" and may also complain about the "outdated mechanics."

Even if they dont want to, CDPR is going to have to actionize this game in this remake to appeal to the broader gaming community and have to censor or remove more sexual content which is probably what I assume they mean by "modernizing" the game. Given the original exists, its not the end of the world imo and I do think this is one of the better decisions made by game developers in the modern era.
