What's cool about it:

  • Arguably one of the best RPGs ever made, with a mature, non-linear story and a challenging combat system
  • Beautiful graphics and an enchanting soundtrack create a very unique dark fantasy atmosphere
  • The Witcher's universe is created by Andrzej Sapkowski - bestselling fantasy author

Your name is Geralt of Rivia and you are a witcher, that means you kill monsters for a living. You were given special training to be the best at what you do and your body has been enhanced with potent elixirs to help you do it.

Suffering from amnesia you remember nothing of your past. Kaer Morhen, the last remaining keep of the witchers, was attacked by a mysterious organization, just as you were starting to lick your wounds there. The battle is won but the secret recipe for the mutagen, a substance required to create more of your kind, has been stolen. The surviving witchers set out to find and reclaim it and punish everyone involved. Memory loss or not, you are one of them.

Set in a dark fantasy world with a unique medieval, yet somewhat modern, feel to it, The Witcher isn't just another fantasy RPG. With a deep story, complex characters, and tough choices that actually matter, this game will keep you glued to your monitor for days.

Overview above just doesn't do justice

Posted on 2011-04-14 13:38:37 byRafaelLVX's avatarRafaelLVX:

The Witcher has many virtues and the sentence "arguably one of the best RPGs ever made" summarizes it.
When I first played this I hated it for its buggy first version, but then Enhanced Edition came and I could finally taste it fully. It's a real modern RPG, with choices that matter, a well-realized world, great characters, great graphics and sound. It's very unique too, withread more its intriguing combat, cool alchemy system, solid novel-like story and main character (much cooler towards the end than pictured on the overview above), *real* dark fantasy world with a vivid Middle Ages tone (unlike the much publicized dark fantasy from Dragon Age), entertaining dialogs and people, knights, princes, bad guys, everything.
So I can't think of a reason why hardcore RPG fans wouldn't like this game. In its final version, bugs and performance issues were pretty much blown away.
Finally I'd like to add I could barely believe when I saw this here because it's not the kind of game you get for ten bucks, it's hardly an old game, very polished, not dated at all, worth more than that.

If only there were more hours in the day...

...I'd play this game again. I sank so many hours into exploring the landscape, fighting every monster I could find, it was easily the best RPG experience I've ever had.
At first (when I played the demo) I didn't get the hang of the rhythmic sword slash mechanism, but after steeling myself (no pun intended) I bought the game during an in-store promo and was kicking ass like neverread more before.
The characters are fleshed-out, the environments are diverse and the quests are - for the most part - interesting and challenging. The combat system is like none other.
I've since bought both English-language translations of Andrzej Sapkowski's novels and thoroughly enjoyed both.
If you're a fan of pretty much any action-oriented, fantasy-setting RPG video game, this is the title to get - especially for $10!

a classic, undoubtedly

There are many commendations about The Witcher. And it's really a "good" game. In my mind, however, The Witcher is a classic because of the choices of moral dilemma in game, those are really the highlights of the game. If you like RPG, you should play it. If you like RPG with fantasy backgound, you must play it.
