There are many good games that aren't on GOG even though they are available DRM-free elsewhere. It's not that a game is bad when it's not on GOG, it's just that GOG seems to be very selective in what they sell. They'd have no use for 'acquiring' the Desura catalogue, if something like that would be possible and make sense at all.

Well, you can. You just have to take good care of your DRM-free installers, same as with the old disks, CD-ROMs and DVDs you'd buy. That you can always download the games again from the seller's website is just an extra feature that you should not rely on too much. Even GOG could be gone one day.
