EDIT: I've done a quick whois lookup, and at least the domain desura.com is paid for until March 2019. :\

This is bizarre. Does the fact that it vanished and then came back imply that someone is deliberately keeping the site up?

I can confirm, that desura.com is still up, but loads very slowly. Maybe some remote local mirror that 's still running, while the majority of sources is down. We'll see.

Desura website and client are up and running again!

If you want to backup your games you can do it from the website:
http://www.desura.com/collection

Also I would advise you to check your keys there, because there might be new steam or in-game additions as in my case.

Some games could be backed-up after install from the Desura client (for games and In-Game CD-KEYS not available thru the website) - for example Zigfrak.

Finally got off my butt and redeemed my 100+ Steam keys at Indie Royale. Guess I'll go ahead and do some Desura backups as well, because 1000 Steam and 900 GOG games just aren't enough.

So what's the story here anyway? Are they going away or not?

The Desura site seems extra-gone right now. Royale is still up for the moment.

I can attest to that. HTTP 400 error without huge loading times. Will it stay down, or will it rise from its ashes like a phoenix again?

Still works here on both Pale Moon and Chrome. Hell, I'm even downloading something now at normal speeds.

Still HTTP 400 for me. Was it perhaps because of the hosts tweak?
