Cronos: The New Dawn

Great real survival horror game.

First of all, I write this review to counter the negative reviews. Honestly, what are some of these reviews? Crying because it is 50 US, which is normal. Crying because it is Bloober Team . I never understood the hate. They are an extremely talented studio in my opinion and I loved them since Layers of Fear and Observer was a masterpiece. Yes, they are not really innovative and copy some things but they don*t have to be. They are one of the few studios which make bigger budget horror games and it is interesting to see how they have grown. Or crying because it is an amateur game sold as a Triple A game which is a blatant lie or crying because it is too hard and you don*t have a dodge button which is undoubtedly by design and adds to the tension. Concerning the game, it is a real survival horror game where you have to manage your ressources and where you have to utilize everything to survive. You need to hit the head for more damage or the legs to cause the enemies to fall to the ground and afterwards you need to stomp them. You need to use fire to stun the enemies and afterwards hit them with melee attacks. You need to use the environment like a car for instance to block enemies if there are too many or explosives and sometimes you simply have to run. In other words you need to play smart. The game is challenging but not too hard. Like I said it is a real survival horror game like the first Silent Hills or Resident Evils and it is extremely satisfying to (sometimes barely) survive the encounters. But the real stars here are the setting, the story and the atmosphere. I love the post apocalyptic, sometimes surreal, Polish scenery. The gameplay itself is very smooth. It is also rather slow and methodical and not only action which I like. I fully recommend the game to any horror fan and I hope to see Bloober Team evolve further. I also would love to see Cronos 2 and hope the negativity of some people will not prevent this.

Starlight Legacy

Extremely charming retro JRPG!

I love this game. It has so much charm and you can literally feel the love the developer put into the game. The music is fantastic and was one of the reasons why I bought it after playing the demo. It really feels like a game from the 16 bit era, not just a homage. Like a forgotten classic from the 90s, similar to the first Final Fantasy games. The story is your classic "find the relics" but it has some nice plot twists (I haven't finished it until now.). The fighting system is simple, yet effective. It is turn based with special abilities, summon, status effects, a rage meter and a lot of cool items. The game even has some metroidvania elements where you need items like a hammer or a flying carpet to progress. The graphics are lovely with some nice effects like snow or footprints in the sand and capture that 90s Super Nintendo feeling perfectly. You can even fly in 3D with a dragon. There were some minor issues but the developer fixed them immediately. Thanks a lot for that. I wonder why there are no reviews. The game deserves much more attention. I hope it does well and we see a sequel. All in all if you like JRPGs, especially from the 90s, or the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, you will love Starlight Legacy. Just buy it, it's fantastic.

Heroes of the Monkey Tavern

Great game!

I don't agree with the negative reviews. I finished the game in 12 hours on normal with the default party and had a great time. Currently I'm on my second playthrough on hard with a paladin, monk, rogue and archer and it is very cool. Much harder than normal as it should be. First, you can't call the game a Legend of Grimrock clone, because Grimrock is a Dungeon Master clone. This genre is very old and Grimrock and Hotmt are rather a revival of the genre. Second, yes, Hotmt is a simpler version of a dungeon crawler but for me this is a plus. This is the trademark of the game and many people trash it for that. I normally also like complex Rpgs and hate dumbing-down but in this case I enjoyed the simplicity. It is very easy to pick up and relaxing after a hard working day. And on hard you also need to think how to take the enemies down. There is no food, light and weight management, but you have to manage your potions and fountains for revival if a party member dies, as there are only a view. I want to mention especially the music, which is absolutely great. The game is worth it for the soundtrack alone. The music creates always the right atmosphere for each floor, sometimes even for special rooms. You always want to know what's behind the next corner. Speaking of atmosphere, there are some surprises. There is not much story but the genre is not known for complex storylines. You have a simple and humorous reason to go on your adventure and that's it. The rest is simply exploring, fighting, looting and solving some puzzles. The ending of the game even made me laugh. All in all, if you want an introduction to the genre, this is a great start. But even experienced Rpg fans could enjoy it, because the game is simply fun. But if you look for a very deep Rpg which you can play for hundreds of hours, you won't find it here. I want to thank the developer for making the game. Don't be discouraged by the negative comments and I hope you make another game someday.

Observer: System Redux

Masterpiece

I liked the former game of this team layers of fear but I didn't love it, mostly because of the story but it was still very good. So I tried this one also due to Rutger Hauer and his remarkable voice and the cyberpunk setting. And what a ride it is. The setting, the story, the visuals, even the gameplay mechanics, although sparse, fitted together. For me this is one of the few games that will stick with me forever. The redux version is even much prettier with raytracing and so on. The two and three stars reviews are ridiculous for me. In my opinion this is nothing less than a masterpiece.
