...after playing Legends of Grimrock, BUT it is just a low-low-low-low-low-cost rip-off.
Hands off!
Play Operencia: The Stolen Sun, Vaporum or Ruzar - The Life Stone instead!
I don't agree with the negative reviews. I finished the game in 12 hours on normal with the default party and had a great time. Currently I'm on my second playthrough on hard with a paladin, monk, rogue and archer and it is very cool. Much harder than normal as it should be.
First, you can't call the game a Legend of Grimrock clone, because Grimrock is a Dungeon Master clone. This genre is very old and Grimrock and Hotmt are rather a revival of the genre. Second, yes, Hotmt is a simpler version of a dungeon crawler but for me this is a plus. This is the trademark of the game and many people trash it for that. I normally also like complex Rpgs and hate dumbing-down but in this case I enjoyed the simplicity. It is very easy to pick up and relaxing after a hard working day.
And on hard you also need to think how to take the enemies down. There is no food, light and weight management, but you have to manage your potions and fountains for revival if a party member dies, as there are only a view.
I want to mention especially the music, which is absolutely great. The game is worth it for the soundtrack alone. The music creates always the right atmosphere for each floor, sometimes even for special rooms. You always want to know what's behind the next corner. Speaking of atmosphere, there are some surprises.
There is not much story but the genre is not known for complex storylines. You have a simple and humorous reason to go on your adventure and that's it. The rest is simply exploring, fighting, looting and solving some puzzles. The ending of the game even made me laugh.
All in all, if you want an introduction to the genre, this is a great start. But even experienced Rpg fans could enjoy it, because the game is simply fun. But if you look for a very deep Rpg which you can play for hundreds of hours, you won't find it here.
I want to thank the developer for making the game. Don't be discouraged by the negative comments and I hope you make another game someday.
Like a previous reviewer said, it's hard to like this after you played LEGEND OF GRIMROCK, especially its sequel. With so many other dungeon crawlers of the 90s being available on GOG, like the EYE OF THE BEHOLDER trilogy, the MIGHT & MAGIC series or STONEKEEP and especially the mentioned before GRIMROCK titles, I can't really recommend HEROES OF MONKEY TAVERN. It's just underwhelming.
Not a total disaster, but definitely below average.
Don't expect a lot from this title. Comparisons to Grimrock and older dungeon crawls are apt, but this is a bite sized game. Plan about 4-5 hours at most for the run through. There's no character development options outside of picking the class, levels are pre-set, mechanics are lacking. Other than a few obnoxiously timed spike traps nothing is really hard and none of it interesting. Is it worth getting? Eh that depends. If you want a couple hours to waste and enjoy these type of games, maybe on a deep discount.
I wanted to like the game, certainly I would get some entertainment out of it? After all, I usually love such classic RPGs.
But this one is (unfortunately) just as bad as everybody says.
This plays like a teenagers failed attempt at making a Grimrock clone. It is short, it is shallow, it is infantile, there is no story to speak of, nothing memorable, nothing even remotely creative. No interesting puzzles. Only repetitive opponents, and mechanics.
It is the level of quality you would expect to find at a school event, or on a free modding site, where juniors of the art show off their first ever attempts at making a game. It is the kind of "sin" that you would later recall and refer to as "I was young and a fool when I made this". It is the kind of game that is so incredibly bad, that its only value would be in serving as a meme.
This title has no redeemable qualities whatsoever.
Forget this game not being worth your money--it is not worth your time.
