The return of an 8-bit legend!

The Lords of Midnight, a unique classic mash-up of RPG, strategy, and interactive fiction, faithfully recreated for modern systems, is now available on GOG.com for only $5.99

The land of Midnight is in danger. The name of the villain menacing the realm is whispered in every homestead with fear and fascination: Doom... dark, Doomdark, Doomdark! Only the Lords of Midnight, the valiant knight protectors of the folk, can stand up to the accursed Whitchking. It will be no easy task, though. The lords will ride the four winds, looking for allies, recruiting their armies, and bringing light to wherever the shadow of Doomdark falls. Forging their legend with their every step, they would become the champions the land needs. Should they fail, all will be lost. Don't let them fail.

The Lords of Midnight was originally released in 1984. What you see here, is a revamped version of the exact same game, retaining its gameplay and graphical style, just adding some more intuitive interface and high resolution graphics. At its core, however, this is the exact same game that enthralled the imagination of many gamers almost three decades ago. The turn based game mixes elements of an adventure with a robust, well-written storyline, an epic wargame in which you manage and command large armies, and a role-playing game with much focus on exploration of the game's incredibly detailed landscape. Your main quest--defeating the evil Witchking Doomdark--is no easy task, and completing the game in any of the possible ways will prove a challenge. Let one of the oldest, yet greatest stories ever told in a computer game unfold before you!

See how deep, addicting, and fun computer games already were 30 years ago. Get The Lords of Midnight today, for only $5.99 on GOG.com!
Yeah, I remember having this on the C64 from a Zzap64 coverdisk and thinking it was an awesome technical achievement, understanding why others loved it but decided it wasn't for me, much like the 'Total War' series today
Saying that though, I can't remember if the C64 version allowed you to save and even if it did dong so to tape would have been a major pain so that might make all the difference, don't think I'll part with my $6 to check just yet though...

I'm surprised by the lack of love for this game. Why aren't you all jumping up and down with glee? It's a classic, people!

In case it's all new to you, imagine the Lord of the Rings in turn-based form. You have two ways to win. The first (and slightly easier) way is a Quest - get Morkin to destroy the Ice Crown in the depths of Doomdark's Domain. As Morkin gets closer, Doomdark turns his attention towards home, relieving the pressure on the rest of the Free. It's very Frodo Baggins.

The second way is a pure military victory. You start with a handful of units and use them to recruit more. Your new recruits come with armies, which can be used for attacking, exploring or defence. Doomdark is a formidable foe - pretty soon, the plains of Midnight are swarming with enemies - so there's a considerable challenge to be had here.

In practice, both aspects happen at the same time, making an epic story that plays differently every time. This version is a huge improvement over the original release, mainly because of the small-but-subtle improvements that Chris has made. The map, in particular, makes it much easier to plot your overall strategy.

A few people have commented that the graphics aren't up to much. I disagree. They're clean and understated, and there's nothing dated about them at all. There are many, many games on GOG which look old - this isn't one of them. If it helps, think of the palette and figures as a style choice.

I've been playing the iOS version since release day, and it's fabulous. Once you get the hang of the way it works then it becomes hard to stop. Seriously, $5.99 is a bargain for such a well-crafted and engrossing remake. I'm going to buy it (again) and I recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in turn-based fantasy wargames.

My girlfriend loves this game. Gifted it to her. Thanks GOG!

Smannesman: I am aware how much things cost since I have spent most of my life working in IT, but just because I spent three months lovingly polishing a turd and putting it in a nice box doesn't automatically mean people should pay me a thousand dollars. It's great that you're trying to improve the world by forcing your vision on it, but unfortunately that's not the world most of us live in.

Bloodygoodgames: Wow, you're a nasty piece of work, aren't you?
Don't worry about them, with that kind of attitude sooner rather than later their job will be outsourced to an IT service company in India, and they might learn about humility and respect. Or then again might just become more bitter. It's all about the attitude.

Roman5: Why isn't the original game included with this release?

This seriously hurts the value aspect of this title

G-Doc: The original game was only officially released on ZX Spectrum (and it's variations), and ported to Amstrad and Commodore 64.
I see, thank you for pointing that out

Bloodygoodgames: I don't think some gamers on GOG have any clue how expensive it is running a website, updating games, paying PayPal, paying rent, electricity etc blah blah blah. It's like some people live in a vacuum with no idea about the real world and want everything for 'almost free'. The 'me me society' again :(

why was this post downrated?

Wow, now this is the type of game with a 2013 release date I'd like to see more here. A remake of a Spectrum strategy/adventure hybrid? I wouldn't have come up with that if I wanted to, three mops up for the release! (for once...)

Although I'm a bit murky on the adventure part, are there any puzzles/dialogue on those "quests", or is that mostly about the game being narrative-driven/story-based?

This might not go down well but I think that game might be a bit too "classic" for me to play, Don't get me wrong I like a lot of the older games but I just don't think ill get on with this one going from what I saw on the little video.

Roman5: why was this post downrated?
I have no idea, I personally don't think it's that insulting. ;)
And strangely enough her post isn't downrated, even though to me that is more insulting and holier-than-thou than my post.
But there is no accounting for taste and some people will always lurk and downrate instead of trying to engage in a discussion. Personally I feel that if you don't agree with a post you either should ignore if you don't want to try and have a discussion that may or may not turn out to be interesting and fun, or try to engage in a discussion.
At least that has always been my take on the whole 'forum' concept which I believe takes its name from the Roman forums where among other things the public could engage in discussions.
The iOS version is reviewed well on Metacritic, whatever that means...
I never thought i would see this game on GOG.....AMAZING!
Seen, clicked, bought, soon to be enjoyed. Thanks GOG! As a C64 veteran, I appreciate you bringing back games that were just as much fun to play with limited computer resources as the multi-gigabyte graphics fests of today. (In some case, the older games are more fun.)

I do concur with what Bloodygoodgames said about the colour palette. I think it could have been rendered in more subtle shades without losing anything. But I can respect the designers's desire to remain faithful, it is their game to make.

Crosmando: Was wondering when this was coming, I've heard the original game was quite interesting in it's day

Also, only one game today GOG?
This i really loved it when GOG had two games coming out on Tuesday and Thursday. But i can understand thats a lot of work. On Topic never played or heard about this game before but for 6$ i will try it out
A strategy game, turn-based, with RPG elements and some very nice graphics - will buy! But unfortunately for the devs it will probably be when it goes on sale since I'm currently mired in games. I haven't even played King of Dragon Pass or Eador: Genesis yet! Well that will be later, currently I'm plotting against the Egyptians in Civilization III.

Ah I see it is an old game too. It probably has some cool and unique gameplay too since it has gotten a remake.
