What kind of hero will you be when our new big publisher joins GOG.com?

Wow, a Monday release and big news today? Is it the end of days?

As we‘ve already told you, 2012 will be a year of grandeur for GOG.com. To prove that, another big publisher will join GOG.com in a move that wasn’t predicted even by the Mayans (and they knew a lot about 2012). Our new publisher carries an impressive portfolio with some of your all-time favorite game heroes that will join the GOG.com catalog in coming weeks. Two game characters that are now a standard in their genres will grace our catalog on this Thursday with as we launch the publisher with style, bringing you two new games on one day.

What kind of hero will you be on that day? What are our two major releases?

GOG.com will be giving you clues about the new publisher right here on our forums, hints about one of the two heroes you’ll see on Thursday via and clues about the other hero on [url=http://www.facebook.com/gogcom]Facebook.

hucklebarry: Additionally, Garrett isn't really a "hero" in the traditional sense. Neither is J.C. Denton.
No, Garrett very much is a hero. He doesn't want to be, and he hates the fact, but he can't really help it. That's the main plot gimmick of the series.
Although I can be very wrong, I thought of Eidos and the Tomb Raider and Thief frandchises just as I was reading about the new publisher.

TheJoe: It's Eidos / Square Enix whatever they're called this week.

First game will be Thief Gold (image by Daedolon)
Well, I think that settles it.. Nice job on the image!

Deus Ex has to be the second release.

Hoping I'm wrong, but I think the clue is pointing to something completely different.
Garrett is a Robin Hood kind of hero, so he is very much a heroic figure, it's just that he never sought to be one.
THIEF III: Deadly Shadows LOL!!!!

This is your opinion of course.

Here is the definition of hero:

1.
a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.
2.
a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal: He was a local hero when he saved the drowning child.

Garrett doesn't have "noble qualities". He is a Thief. He looks out for himself first.
He is not regarded as a "model" or "ideal"

He does what he has to do and is seriously bothered to be thrust into his situation where even though he is saving himself... he is also saving others... something he would run from if he wasn't included in the list of those being saved.

Compare to Superman who seeks out to do good and help all in need while not caring for himself.

Don't confuse the word "hero" with a bash on the game. I already said I hope I'm wrong.
I've probably been playing too much Fable II, as that's the first thing I thought of when reading "What Kind of Hero Will You Be?" - of course, that game was never released for Windows, only the predecessor and sequel were.

doowopman: The original GTAs.

I'd rather play the original versions though, I've had no end of trouble getting the free ones running smoothly (until I gave up, which I suppose could count as an end) while the originals work great.

Using that definition is a bit absurdly rigid considering it eliminates a huge chunk of very basic heroic archetypes and the Hero's Journey that informs the vast majority of storytelling.
If it is Eidos, Tomb Raider will be one and the other...possibly Thief.

this.

there is more than one hero type. just think of the anti-hero and the unlikely hero.

and in games, pretty much every character you get to play is a 'hero'.

Yeah, and I think this definition fits quite nicely. The Keepers genuinely admire Garrett, and his courage and abilities are quite distinguished. And he didn't really have to do all he did just to save himself. Stopping the villain of the second game (I'm trying to be spoiler free here) wasn't really his personal priority.

Oh, don't worry, I don't :) It seems the speculations are over now anyway, so we're free to discuss whatever we want to, and this is an interesting point.
Your big news is that a few days from now, there's going to be big news?
Pixelated character behind the counter is definitely and 100 percent Garrett

proof?

Thief Series (Thief 1,Gold,2)
I'm now thinking Thief Gold and Deus Ex GOTY, but I'm worried that I'm setting myself up for too big a disappointment if this turns out to be wrong.

If it's true, this is SO AWESOME!
