Elmofongo: One question regarding the TOS era. Every time I see like promotional poasters of TOS they always she this white blonde haired women with the crew. Especially in poster shots of the whole TOS crew like this:

http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/images/6/6d/Star_Trek_TOS_cast.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20090218222025&path-prefix=en

Yet I don't remember her at all? Who is this women yet I never seen her in movies. Yet these images imply she was an essential member of the crew?
avatar
Breja: The picture is small as shit, but I think that is nurse Chapel. She was a supporting character, had a crush on Spock, I remember she was in the first movie, as a doctor by then. More importantly, she was played by Gebe Roddenberry's wife, who also portrayed the first oficer of the Enterprise in the original pilot that wasn't picked up, and later in TNG she has a recurring role as the mother of Deanna Troy.
Can you tell me what are at least the best episodes of Season 1 TNG I will expect?

Lwaxana Troi is an awesome character. Just when you want to strangle her, she turns out to be a smart lovable creature. I love the relationship she has with Odo in DS9.

that epsiodes where she was stuck with odo in an elevator really showed a whole new side to the character
but so did dark page in tng

Elmofongo: Deep Space Nine better be Game of Thrones level of Dark and Adult filled with Moral Ambiguity. (And awesomeness)

Depsite what snowkatt said I always saw TNG as simply TOS with a bigger budget , writing and production values with new characters. And thats not really a bad description.
i believe i said that myself ?

i always championed ds9 in here not tng

tng is a good show but it apes tos with a bigger budget better special effects and more modern sensibilities

there are great episodes in there but also dreck

ds9 is where star trek truly shines

Well you'll definitely will see one gory episode with 'Conspiracy'...;)...but iirc '11001001' was quite okay...but it's been some years since i watched the first season...

I love the progress of Odo and Troi's relationship. He despises her, he sympathises with her, marries her and then falls for her. It was so well done.

like i just said ds9 is where star trek truly shines
tng follows it but ds9 is just brilliant in how it tackles its subjects and interpersonal relationships

sisko at the end is not the sisko at the start he has grown
jake has actually grown

( that was another awesome relationship in the show the relationship between father and son )
and so on

tng for all its merits we know very little about the characters through those 7 season and very little growth
picard and data grow the most
practically everybody else is cast in stone
and troi remains annoying

the father and son relationship (in my opinion) is one of the best things about star trek overall. Seeing Ben and Jake grow and change with each other is pretty fun. But relationships in general is something that show excelled in. Odo and Quark, can watch those two all day.

Yes definitely. DS9 also had really great recurring characters like Garak or Weyoun.

Good grief this third episode of Season 1 TNG feels exactly The Original Series.

The music, and the sets feel like I am watching a TOS episode.

..well that was the idea if you are watching what i think you are watching ( either code of honor or the naked now )

cause back in 87 tng stil had to prove it self as the new star trek and to get people interested in this new star trek they decided to emulate tos

this fortunately did not last

Code of Honor and it was bland and forgettable. I already forgotten what the plot was other then these African/Middle Eastern styled humans being an alien race.

oh absolutely i just mentioned those two because they first came to mind
one of the greatest things about DS9 is that the characters actually grow and change

nog is another great character development his father also had a great mini arc especially when he gave his son permission to persue what he wanted and stood up to quark

i generally dont like ferengi's but these were good characters

good thing to
it was bloody awfull one of the worst of tng's first season and of the series as a whole
the naked now was some what better mostly because it played of its tos predecessor

The Babylon 5 vs. DS9 is fairly simple. Babylon 5 was pitched to Paramount first. They were in negotiations to produce it, including possibly to convert in into the Star Trek universe. I believe they were working with WB for a network. Both negotiations failed.

Its not like they stole it verbatim at all, but key aspects were duplicated. DS9 took the long-running multiple season story arc. Took the concept of a space station overlooking a master/slave civil war Cardassians/Bajoran Centauri/Narn. Took the concept of the captain of said space station having a destiny. Took the idea that there was a greater war afoot to be introduced later. And they took the idea that those on the space station would end up at odds with their respective organizations.

DS9 put it into the Star Trek universe. It seems more like they took the raw outline and the concepts of B5 they liked the best and just ran with it in their own direction. DS9 was far better for it, as it really took the series in a different direction.

Saw the 4th episode. Pretty OK. It was important for Introducing the Ferengi. (Essentially the sci fi versions of greedy dwarves/goblins)

Thats how you introduce alien races.

i generally like the battle ( episode 9 or 8 depending on what order you watch )
it also gives us a good look at a starship that is NOT the enterprise or an excelsior class
