You need to see how this one ends!

SiN Gold, a classic first-person shooter with an original futuristic story of fight against an artificial outburst of criminal tendencies, and one of the best level designs of the 1990s, coming complete with the Wages of Sin expansion, is available for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

SiN Gold is one of the great and memorable first-person shooters of the olden days. Upon release it was highly praised for the great execution of its original and involving storyline and great level design, but sadly, it suffered from long loading times and pesky glitches. The fact that the patch fixing these problems was over 30MB in size in the times of Dial-Up Internet didn't help as well. That is how a game that deserves a prominent place in gaming's all-time hall of fame ended up slightly forgotten and overlooked by many FPS fans. With all the trouble way in the past, it is now time to get acquainted (or reunited) with this fantastic title! You can explore different puzzles and new routes each time you play. You will hack computer terminals, control security cameras, and wreak havoc. You will encounter new dangers and intelligent beings in every mission as you fight your way to the ultimate showdown! And you better believe it, an ultimate showdown it will be. The game comes complete with the Wages of Sin expansion.

Begin your crusade against crime and bring down the sinister syndicate lead by the beautiful but deadly Elexis Sinclaire in SiN Gold, for only $9.99 on GOG.com!

ShadowWulfe: I played through Sin and Wages of Sin and really the only problem I seem to have was a bit of a slowdown whenever lighting effects took place.
With regards to shooting portions it usually just meant that I had to step up my game so that the baddies couldn't fire their guns and create the slowdown.
Where it really got annoying was flashing emergency lights and one level in some science labs near the end of the game, but those weren't too much trouble.
Interesting. I assume this was recently then.

I'll probably pick it up when it goes on sale, I just wish they would put things like the lighting effects in the gamecard.
There is no slowdown if your card support OpenGL correctly. If not, tone down things a little. I'm not waiting for promo as this can take some time for a game recently added to GOG catalogue and wouldn't make sense in terms of sales.

Haha yah I finished it yesterday and bought it day one. I was kind of stoked to finally play a version of Wages of Sin that worked. I didn't try all of the different graphics options, I just set it t 3DFxOpenGL and found that it worked and didn't make my computer try to explode (the default OpenGL really did not agree with my Radeon) and shrugged through some of the slowdowns.

Edit: Yes, very playable. The vast majority of fights don't have any significant slowdown.

I thought so, but it sounds like it's still more than playable. I just wanted to make sure I didn't have to account for the differences between machines from 15 years ago.

I have the original and it plays fine on win7 64.
It depends on game. Kingpin can get slow on Default OpenGL, yet 3DFX helps, but in Daikatana example game runs faster on default OpenGL and using 3DFX loading is longer and generally game is slower, also has problems with scalling and saturation (pink cursor) but has nice shiny effect on weapons. SiN probably runs better with 3DFX and sucks with OpenGL mostly on integrated graphic cards in laptops.

korell: Got a response from Natalia saying that the product team has been informed and hopefully the game will be fixed soon. So whether that will be a fixed nglide 0.99 gamma setting or the latest nglide 1.02 provided instead we will have to wait and see, but it looks like it'll be looked into anyway. :)

hedwards: Does that mean that nglide is supported in this release? That's something that should have been in the game card. Assuming I didn't miss it. I remember sin was an early user of colored lighting.
Yes, it currently comes with nglide 0.99, but some users have reported that on launching the game they just get a black screen but can hear the menu sounds. Resolutions mentioned have been to adjust the nglide gamma setting or to install nglide 1.02 (the latest version), so I would guess that it is a faulty gamma setting. But once that is out the way the game should be fine.

Only other fixes I've seen mentioned are (if you have nvidia) to use NVIDIA Inspector to add a profile fo Sin.exe so that it has the Extension Limit on just like the nvidia drivers do for Quake 2 and Kingpin (and some other Q2 engine games, no idea why Sin is missing from nvidia's profiles) but this is for if you choose to use OpenGL and not 3DFX. I've also seen someone say they had stuttering problems which they resolved by limiting the frame rate to 60.

Wrong all you have to do is ADD a profile pointing to the Exact executable file

But just adding a profile with no customized settings is just mirroring the global profile which is used when an executable doesn't exist in any profile. You must have to make some change to see any difference, and from what is present both in the GOG forum and elsewhere, what makes the difference is turning on the Extension Limit option, as is present in the Quake 2, Kingpin, etc default profiles.

JudasIscariot: Ahh yes, Natalia is a true bro :)
Hi Judas, I found out what I believe to be the root cause of this issue:

Some of the games here on GOG come with nglide 1.02, the latest version, whilst SiN comes with 0.99. Whilst 1.02 has 11 settings for gamma, with setting value 5 the default for gamma = 1.0, version 0.99 only has 5 settings for gamma (0-4), and both versions save their settings to the same registry key.

As such, if the user has used nglide 1.02 the gamma uses value 5 in the registry (for gamma = 1.0). Then on loading up SiN, if they don't use the configurator to change the gamma value, nglide 0.99 cannot understand what the gamma setting is as 5 is out of range, hence the black screen.

Anyway, sent the details over to GOG support last night, but today I had a response and it was said that nglide 1.02 caused some gameplay issues with AMD graphics cards on some of your test beds, so it won't be updated. :(

However, it is still useful for you guys to know about the issues of using different versions of nglide, though, as they share the same registry keys. (I much preferred it when nglide saved settings to an ini file).

Don't worry, we know :) That's why we had to go with the earlier version of nglide so that it would work for more people and wouldn't exclude those who have AMD cards because being excluded from the fun is no fun :(

Yeah, but that's also where the downside comes in too, as when newer versions of nglide are released, it isn't as if it can be expected for there to be a full re-testing of all of your games that use nglide to update them to the latest version, as that would take a lot of time and effort, so this will mean that shared settings in registry between different versions will continue to be an issue for any games that currently have to use version 0.99. Certainly not ideal, but at least your support staff know about it so it can be used in support queries if needed.

NoxTM: How odd; I tried to post here and it seems the forum ate my post. Possibly because of the year+ thread necro, possibly just delayed or possibly GOG hates Nox(TRADEMARK LOLZ!).

Anyway, yes, I know this game was on sale a month or two ago, but was that the only time, or has it been more than once? If so, what's the cheapest it's gone for? I found a tracker site somewhere or t'other about GOG prices but it just looked like a jumbled mess to me, possibly because of my Firefox add-ons.

If it's not on sale very often I might just have to suck it up and pay the $10 at some point, but I'd rather not if I didn't have to, obviously.

Now let's see if GOG decides it's going to show both of posts, worded slightly differently, and make me look a bit odd.

(Also, buy Nox™.)
