In space no one can hear you squeal.

Dead Space, the first member in the engrossing space horror/survival saga, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 60% launch discount.

Grotesque nightmares are shambling, writhing, and twitching towards you from every direction. Pockets of zero gravity, which fundamentally upsets the rules of engagement, threaten to throw you off-balance. Devious puzzles only a mechanic with installed Kinesis and Stasis modules could solve, challenge your feverish mind. Welcome aboard the USG Ishimura, a "planetcracker" starship crawling with Necromorphs, a twisted lifeform spawned under the influence of a sinister alien artifact. Made from reassembled limbs of dead organisms, the best way to dispose of them is to dismember them back with your plasma cutter, then stomp on their gross remains to make sure they stay down. But what of the voices tormenting you from beyond the borders of sanity? Will you manage to amputate them too or will you end up just another lost soul, drifting across the void of Dead Space?

Dismember scores of twitching Necromorphs and face the perverse horrors lurking in Dead Space, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 60% launch discount will last until July 21, 12:59 PM UTC.

A heads up, unless the GOG version has done something about it it, the in-game v-sync option will screw up your ability to aim properly. Force variable/dynamic v-sync in your video driver instead to fix this.

Whaat? I've played this and I totally recommend it for all, even faint hearted. It's a really good game.

Crosmando: so this is a good shooter?
It really is.

fronzelneekburm: I'm really, really, REALLY looking forward to playing this! This was one of those games where the online activation DRM bummed me out the most (along with Bioshock, Mirror's Edge, Half-Life 2 and the Ghostbusters game) because I wanted to play the game so badly. Hopefully it lives up to the hype (Bioshock didn't). Can't wait for Mirror's Edge to follow suit. Maybe GOG can convince someone at Atari to release Ghostbusters here as well.
Bioshock IS available DRMFREE, but not on GOG; is on Humble.

It's not so much a shooter, it's a survival horror game that succeeds really damn well at being a tense scary game that involves shooting. You have limited ammo and enemies have to be taken out in a rather unorthodox fashion. It's fresh and exciting, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Just heed my above comment about v-sync.

Not on GOG yet. The keyword being yet.

There's nothing we CAN do, the game is subject to the limitations of being a console port.

I didn't think so, I assumed it would be inherent to the game. Luckily there are easy external fixes for the issue.

I honestly don't know why it isn't already here.

I wrote my very first game review ever for this game, but it seemed like it did not pass the censor board... *sob*

I use GPU v-sync settings like they're going out of style except for DOSBox games as it conflicts with DOSBox rendering settings I use and causes stuttering frame rate.
... 'bout time. Played this back when I still had an Xbox 360. I remember I didn't really love it, but enjoyed it enough to finish it. I thought they overdid it a bit with the jump scares, and with the amount of enemy encounters which got a little tiresome after a while. Still a solid Action/Horror experience for anyone who likes the genre and still hasn't played this, for whatever reason. Even better if you also like the setting of the game, since they did throw in some entertaining elements such as zero-gravity sections.

Now let's hope this isn't all, and EA will eventually give GOG ( and us ) some of their more recent games as well. Or at least some more "old" ones, such as the Dead Space sequels or Mirror's Edge.

Why sell it here for peanuts when 2K could charge 60 bucks for their NEW, REMASTERED, DELUXE, SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S REDUX COLLECTION?

Matewis: Incredible, incredible game!
Yeah? I tried playing it a couple times and couldn't get past crappy controls, UI, and bad dialogues. What does it offer if I can get past those things (though, having tried multiple times, I'm not sure I'll be able to.) It seemed very jump-scarey too, which just bores me.

Uhm, honestly I can't remember having issues with any of that. Well, the mouse did act really weird until I disabled Vsync, but that was it. To me Dead Space offered everything the complete package and then some as far as action horror games go. Cold Fear is the only other game in the genre I really enjoyed, but even that got a tad repetitive and too action-y after a while (still an awesome game though). I was engrossed with Dead Space from beginning to end.

If you quit close to the beginning each time, then you would've found yourself fighting in corridors and small rooms most of the time. As you progress the levels start to open up and become quite a bit larger compared to first one or two levels. Also, yeah, there are some jump scares in the beginning, but I can't really remember that being the norm for the majority of the game. Most games of the genre probably rely on jump scares to introduce monsters for the first time.

One of the things that Dead Space does really well is the weapon system. Apart from being really fun to use (especially the force gun!) each weapon can be extensively upgraded during the course of the game. But you won't able to upgrade all the weapons completely (perhaps only 2 at most), so that adds some replay value because they do require different fighting styles.
This game has some of the best sound design of any game, ever.
