awalterj: I can understand your sentiment but imho it's very easy to avoid threads like that. Very often, you can quite accurately guess from the thread title alone whether the content of the thread will have hostilities and posts that might upset you. Reading and participating are entirely voluntary. And getting upset is also voluntary. There are plenty of awesome threads where you are guaranteed to encounter no toxic elements whatsoever. Example:
Draw and Guess the Game.
Well, how about a "General '
Fuck you, you worthless piece of shit'-Discussions" sub forum then?
No, sorry, I don't think avoiding threads where people are likely to insult each other is the solution. A new TET (someone telling people to calm down once in a while) is.
Regarding the giveaways:
While I stopped doing any new giveaways (because there are just too many people hopping from giveaway to giveaway), I don't think that they're the problem here. What's happening in the scammers thread is only partially related to "leeches, lurkers and scammers" (and the witch hunting is done by regulars). The people from the Gamergate thread aren't your typical giveaway crowd. The stuff in the TotalBiscuit thread was started by long-time members with high rep. And I haven't seen fr33kSh0w2012 and monkeydelarge lurking giveaways either. But what they did in the death threat thread would've resulted in an immediate perma ban on every other forum I've ever seen.
And then there's this problem where some people (and I guess they're no "code grabbers") use the "report spam" button to delete threads and postings they don't like (
recent example). So, instead of moderators we have a user police who deletes harmless threads they don't like and leaves harassment and insults untouched. Great!
No, this is no giveaway related problem... What's happening here is that no one fucking cares what users do here anymore. TheEnigmatic-"
We Don't want to moderate, so please keep it civil"-T had an eye on the forums and stepped in when it was necessary (and this seemed to be sufficient). Now that he's gone, we have no moderation at all. And what happens? Higher rep, long-time members start to go postal (which reminds me of the Hatred thread -.-).
