Cyraxpt: Better yet, what was the name of that guy that was leaking gog's games to pirate bay? I want to search for that thread and see what happened to him.
avatar
Grargar: Lugum.
That's the one, was searching for this thread, didn't really remember that story or how it ended.
Ah yes back to the banning everyone who has a personality thread. Fuck this idea. It's good on paper but will fuck us all up the ass instantly.

For what it's worth, I agree with you.

I am a member of several forums, and the better moderated ones are better. I like GOG, but not because of the threats, trolls, insults and hate speech. Yes, I mean hate-speech - in its stricter definition. I have seen talk about "the Jews" that would qualify anywhere as hate speech.

Good moderation would help a lot.

I'm not sure of your point?

Acriz: Why does that appear when replying to your post? Failed link?

OneFiercePuppy: Intentional.

[url= Main post covers whatever I think I should be saying, but then sometimes for clarification - or just because I want to go off-topic or be silly - I may add in additional stuff in a URL tag. If you don't care what I'm saying, why should I take up more screen space? If you care enough to perhaps reply, then it's there to be considered or ignored, at your leisure. ][/url]
Huh, I never considered that possibility. This could actually be used as a spoiler tag. Good find :-)

Cyraxpt: didn't really remember that story or how it ended.
Specifically, it ended with Judas locking the thread as was no evidence to support Lugum having done anything wrong in that regard - whole thing had been an ugly lynchmob from the start.
Lugum then stopped posting on here.

Sachys: theres no discussion on it really as GOG has said (specifically) "we dont have the resources to fix this" - which they've been saying for a long time as its been a problem for a long time - and they also dont actually seem to care.

they're looking at growth - not making sure things work to sustain that growth. galaxy, new publishers, regional pricing etc has taken their focus away from the community and onto other things.

though, a quick forum search will show that this has been an issue adressed to GOG over and over again since its inception.

- hence my comment of "they dont seem to care" earlier in ths post
On the whole they never really cared. I remember this topic coming up years ago and they pretty much said they don't care. There's a few things they care about, cursing in titles, linking to pirate sights and sometimes abusing other people in the fora, but on the whole they don't seem to care.

I was against it then and I'm against it now. I don't think we need to have the place heavily moderated, but I was a lot nicer when I first got here. Over the years I've gotten increasingly grouchy as there's basically no punishments for anything but the most extreme bad behavior.

Even GR's Smut Hut thread was barely a slap in the wrist compared to what you'd get elsewhere.

In the past, like around the time you signed up, it was still working fairly well, but every year it gets a little worse. Right about the time the winter sales draw people in there's a noticeable drop in decorum and intellect. Generally a bit of a bump after the sales, but generally a slight downward trend.

On that note, I'm shocked that they tolerate that scammers thread to continue.

I've actually found it tends to be the summer sale that does it - combined with the lesser postings of many people out enjoying better weather it just condenses things.

I suppose similar could be said for around christmas though too.

...and yes... that thread does tend to get a bit lynchsome

My two cents is this. The GOG community has been too nice for too long and it's caused a lot of really fringe elements to sort of take root here, and some of the new faces aren't exactly savory. I hate the throw the baby out with the bathwater, but if you remember the thread about lugum, Judas gave some solid advice. Cut down on the giveaways and the parasites, weirdos, scammers and keygrabbers will stop having a reason to be here. Or maybe find another avenue for them, where they can't reach you.

Either way, by GOG being so welcome, it allows a lot of shitty elements to sort of take up residence and spread. Phantom downrepping is just one symptom, in my opinion. I don't contribute much to the forums myself, but I'm lurking and I see things and I've noticed a downward trend over the last year that's a little disconcerting. It's not tinyE's derails, although they can be a 50/50 toss up whether it's amusing or annoying. It's not just the Gamergate thread, as the GG supporters and SJWs tend to stick to that and there's not much bleed over. It's not just ADD ME FRANDS threads, although they're annoying and spammy. It's not just the OMG GALAXY SUX AND/OR IS CONFUSING AND/OR SEKKRIT DRMZ! That leaves the giveaway threads. Maybe it's time to slow it down again, folks. I know it's pretty bad when you have to tell people to stop being so accomodating and generous, but you're gonna catch more flies with honey. I mean that in the literal sense of the word, as they're annoying buzzy little insects that lay eggs and create more parasites like them.

Anyway, that's just my opinion and people are free to call me an idiot or disagree. I'm going back to lurking!

Actually it was also the manner of delivery on GAs Judas noted - ie making it easy for people to enter with an "I'm in!" and so on. He also noted the same when Ninja thread imploded - and hence we set up the TBBBBOB as means to avoid then need for open code drops / ongoing threads that the lesser derisable types might find (and so on).

Even though we've not been able to do it in some time due to tech / real life and the forum changes (oh that crappy crappy chat system), those others doing giveaways should also be aquiring some effort from their entrants - so I do agree to a degree - just wanted to clarify a little.

I used to go in there from time to time and try to explain to them how counterproductive and risky it was accusing people. But, nobody in there seems to much care and ultimately, the only option for preventing scamming would be for GOG to set up a system or for people to stop giving away game so freely.

What pisses me off about the thread is when they call people out on cultural issues. Or have unrealistic expectations about what people should do with things they've given or are being too greedy. A multicultural forum cannot assume everybody is on the same page.
The "too" nice element, was good a few years back when the site wasn't so popular, now with the increased traffic its not the niche of nice people it used to be before the beta a forum I had a lot of fun posting in and reading back then. Actually talking about gaming in general was something more fun, before it became a cultural phenomenon dragging politics into the mix.
