I hesitate to even enter this thread, but this is hardly the first RPG in this subgenre that GoG has reportedly given this "niche" denial to recently, but that all exist on Steam:

Fall of the Dungeon Guardians (Very Positive, 370 reviews)
The Quest (Very Positive, 258 reviews)
Ruzar the Life Stone (Mostly Positive, 79)
Heroes of the Monkey Tavern (Mostly Positive, 204)

You can assume whatever other motive you like (politics, attitude, etc.) but the short version is GoG seems to think this genre as a whole isn't moving enough product to be worth the time investment. I'm quite fond of FoDG and The Quest, and the dev of FoDG even came to the GoG forums and participated in a productive discussion with some of us and gave some game tips). Ruzar is perhaps a bit under ambitious, but it has some charms.

This particular entry into the genre certainly seems more ambitious than others, but -leaving out everything about the dev entirely- I'd personally approach this game a bit cautiously given that it seems a bit rambling and unpolished, and it has a relatively high price point compared to other recent entries.

And again, GoG seems to just be saying no to new entries in this genre. As much as there may be a vocal fanbase, it's not clear (even to me as a fan) that there's a particularly large fanbase.

KiNgBrAdLeY7: Besides, there was that huge controversy with that SJW employee of GOG before, he caused quite the ruckus, some time ago. (just google it out, i am too bored to deal with that, sorry)
I'm sorry too, but the only controversy I heard of was about Linko. He wasn't SJW, he was harrassed and even doxed by SJWs, so he had to leave GOG.

babark: Now I am wondering what the last similar game gog accepted was? Classic and new/indie.
Vaporum is the only recent one I can think of, and that had more press and the 'twist' of being steampunk rather than high fantasy.

Asbeau: Let's get real. This was never going to happen.

Grimoire wouldn't be accepted by any store with curation, and nobody in their right mind would want to work with Cleve or want to be associated with him.
Why? Because the guy has some weird political views? Grow up, that has nothing to do with the quality of his game.

GOG is no longer the platform for old-school-style RPGs, it's the platform for pretentious, trendy indie garbage.

tinyE: So does Hatred.
I own it.
My good friend! I envy you... I want to own Hatred, Agony and Grimoire, too! But on GOG... Pretty please, can I?

Also, 4400+ people, ask for it. 500+ people ask for Agony, as well! Why not let them buy it and judge for themselves?

Blast me! Info was sparce and people claimed quite the opposite... Guess that besides art, news are the next victim of "freedom" and "rights", alas! Thanks for setting that straight.

KiNgBrAdLeY7: Sniff...

"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark"... I mean, GOG.

Lots of game rejections, lately. I am not one to judge, but i really don't like the direction things are going.
Pretty much this. Sad, really.

THIS IS GETTING OUT OF HAND!!!

Disappointing, I held off from purchasing Grimoire on Steam because I had hoped it would be sold through GOG at a later point. Rejecting it for being a niche dungeon crawler is absolutely ridiculous considering the other niche dungeon crawlers available for purchase here. Demand seems reasonable as well with 652 votes, so Grimoire being of allegedly lesser production value than other similar games or having mixed reviews or whatever shouldn't matter either.
The deliberate retro aesthetic and usability is not for everyone, but that's the case with other games that somehow got accepted and are now sold here as well. Again, there's currently 652 people interested in picking this up DRM-Free on GOG.

Going to continue holding off from getting Grimoire anywhere else for now, as I'd really like to support the platform and the DRM-Free cause.

Look at what hill you are trying to defend...

We have Hatred which was a game that was "popular" in terms of being in the public mind, but the game really wasn't very good. Regardless, due to the attention it received, it likely would have sold many copies. That is the closest this thread has come to a questionable rejection in terms of GoG profiting from a game.

Next is Agony which made almost every worst game of 2018 list I've seen. Maybe it got improved with it's Agony Unrated release which supposedly incorporated a bunch of bug fixes and graphics additions, but at the time of its release, it was a trainwreck.

Then you have The Quest, a decent looking game with no recognition and no real sales on other platforms. Probably the best game listed here but with a forgettable title and no promotion, it is no surprise it was passed over.

And now Grimoire which came out buggy, with no manual for over a year and a developer who flies off the handle regularly threatening anyone saying anything bad about his game...

GoG carries less than 3000 games and I think Steam is approaching 40000. Clearly none of these games belong in the top 10 - 20% of games on Steam and thus do not belong in a curated catalog over 10x smaller than Steam's...

You completely forgot Jagged Alliance: Rage! - a game that, while having it's good moments, is bugged, looks cheap mobile product and totally hated by the Jagged Alliance fanbase (which is supposed to be its main audience). It definitely doesn't belong to top 20% games on Steam, and yet it's here, even with GOG version being worse than Steam one (co-op was cut out).

GoG making a poor decision on a game is NOT a good argument in favor of taking in other poor or underperforming games...
LootHunter is on fire today.

He must have gotten that promotion to Grand Wizard he's been shooting for. :D
