VeTrack: One thing to take note if you haven't already knew: Even though it isn't Yaoi, it's er... close?
Yeah, if that's the case I doubt I'll last long xD

I guess it depends if it actually flirts with it or it's just the art style. Kuroko no Basuke, if I didn't see it myself also kind of feels in that direction with the art style but the characters, action and music are sublime and well worth it.

It's definitely not explicit so you're fine. I would watch it myself if I can find the spare time...

KasperHviid: I could never get into Serial Experiments Lain. (it was too deep, or maybe the subs were just too crappy.)
Thanks for reminding me of that series, I really liked the mysterious and foreboding tone throughout. I think I haven't seen all of it, there it goes on my list of things to revisit.

Blame! - I only read two books (and liked those, want to read all of them). Ghost in the Shell - love the two films, but here again I gotta finish the TV series yet. I really dug the first season of Stand Alone Complex, so I don't quite know what's been keeping me all this time to finish it. And then devote myself to the stuff beyond SAC.

Eden: It's an Endless World! - read the first seven books, and although it's a quality manga with a deep story, I was disappointed that the original plot setup changed pretty soon after the first book.

Berserk - read the first eight books, but then lost interest. Couldn't get into the anime. The Dreamcast game was wild fun though. And alongside the first Ghost in the Shell movie, Akira is one of my favorite anime films of all time.

You should definitely check the rest of S.A.C.

Arise isn't really worth watching however. At least in my opinion. I found it very unmemorable.

I wanna watch all GitS for sure (just not eager to see the live-action movie, yuck). Have you read After the Long Goodbye? I didn't expect much, but was pleasantly surprised. I definitely do recommend that book.
I'm probably not as big of a fan as most, but I really do enjoy anime.

Some of my favorites that I highly recommend:

1. Ajin: Demi-human - About a race of people with a genetic alteration that makes them unable to die, but they also have the ability to manipulate a dark substance and make a "ghost" they can control.

2. Aldnoah.zero - It's about Earth and an ancient technology discovered on the first moon landings. There are gates to Mars and we begin to colonize it, finding an ancient power. It leads to a war between Earth and Mars, and of course mechs are the main weapon.

3. Seven Deadly Sins - Not as good as the fist two, but great in its own way. It's about a time when the world of magic and the Earth were still together. It's supposed to be long before recorded history, but has sort of a medieval setting to it. There are a band of holy knights capable of magic that are called the Seven Deadly Sins, and it follows them through being framed for crimes and through a holy war.

I put all three of these in the movies request section because I would instantly buy them. As soon as I have some extra cash I'm going to buy them on DVD. I highly recommend them to anyone just for the storylines and quality, but especialyl if you're into the supernatural or mechs at all.

One final mention I would make is a very old one and not really anime, but the American version of anime. It was a series called Exosquad from the mid 90s. I loved this series so much I recorded it on VHS when it was aired, bought the two seasons they released on DVD, and still have my collection of Exosquad toys from when I was a kid and I'm 33 now. It's about a race of clones we created to mine Mars, they are genetically made to withstand the harsh environment and for hard labor. Of course there are mech type weapons called Exo-frames, which is what the Exosquad uses. The "neosapians" we made to mine Mars revolt and the series follows the squad through the war. I highly recommend anyone check it out, it was basically an adult cartoon. You may still be able to find copies of the DVDs since they were just released around 2011.

Haven't read it. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll keep it in mind. Been a while since I've last dived into the GitS universe.

MiKiL: I was baffled too about Yuri On Ice! until I checked the the rules of the voting..
avatar
VeTrack: I'm baffled how the rules of voting are supposed to explain your bafflement! Care to explain further?

In all seriousness though, take care not to judge something before you even watch it. At the very least, don't do it in here. =P
I wasn't trashing the series so if it sounded like that, that might have been because of bad wording from me, if so, sorry bout that. I haven't watched it to end yet because of other series in my queue but characters are very likeable and Yuri growing up in and out of the rink is well made, animation was very good too.

Baffled because there were other good ones like KonoSuba, Re:Zero and Jojo but I probably have normal male taste of series, I guess. X-)

And for the voting,
1 vote/day for 30 days period sounds bit skewed because some people might vote only one and same serie every day while some people might vote different series in different days, skip few days not voting or only give 1 vote at first day and not again after that (losing multiple potential votes).

(This odd rambling coming from over 40 year old anime/manga hobbyist. X-) )
Where do you guys get yer animu news from? Any Sites/youtubers you would recommend?

I consult the great anime sage Demolition_D because his knowledge of asian animation goes beyond the realm of mortal comprehension. But he only gets off his mountain like once a year so I was wondering if there's soem other fool opinion's I can check in the meantime.

VeTrack: I don't follow Overlord that closely but don't get your hopes up, especially since the compilation films have already been announced. Even if there's going to be any continuation, it might not be a full season.

How's the music? When I first heard Uematsu worked on it, I was wondering how many players will actually listen to the music while playing a mobile game. Btw, there will be an anime for it this year. I think it already has a LN adaptation.
Oh, I know I'm probably hoping for the impossible as Overlord is already under Madhouses' curse. I'd be perfectly happy with an OVA too, I'm so infatuated with that series s I'd gobble up anything they make with it.

The music was fine I guess, I didn't know someone famous worked on the score too, not paying particular attention to it it didn't really stand out as special to me.

Which part are you on now? Any trouble following everything or the mystery is driving you on? The manga can be so hard to get into...

Btw, snowflake feels abandoned. =P

Don't worry, it's fine. Your 'rambling' on definitely helps to explain it better. =)

I understand your concern on the voting system but at least it's regulated and still a better gauge than several other websites and polls. Of course, it is still a very subjective matter and that's why I've put up more than one of the rankings. In fact, all 3 that you mentioned are higher ranked than Yuri on the Niconico's list. Nonetheless, always take them as a reference more than anything. If there's one thing I like about TAAF's ranking, it's the number of votes.

1. Yuri on Ice - 64,774 votes
2. Joker Game - 50,610 votes
3. Binan Koukou Chikyu Boei-bu LOVE! - 24,711 votes
4. Mob Psycho 100 - 19,088 votes

As you can see, the number of votes for No.2 is more than twice that of No.3. That huge jump is significant and says a lot even with the possibility of multiple votes. But like I said, don't take it too seriously. There have been some very controversial rankings over the years...

How about recommending it to KasperHviid?
Awww Yissss another animu thread.

For me the best shows in 2016 were Gintama°, Shokugeki no Souma: Ni no Sara, and the new JoJo
I think the best show of 2016 is Gintama.
I also think the best animated movies of 2016 are Digimon Tri movies.

I really don't understand why many people like yuri on ice... it is just the same yaoi series that they make every season (Free was similar and better... still I'm not a fan of yaoi-like anime. I watched Free because is the first anime around swimming).

D.Gray-man HALLOW was really good, but I understand that 103 episode to watch a new series is a lot... Still for me is the second best of 2016.

Jojo is one of the best of course.

Boku no hero academia is new life for the classic shonen genre, I love that because I still love to watch shonen anime.

And talking about shonen I really think DragonBall Super Goku Black arc deserve a mention. It was the best arc of dragonball ever made (if we exclude the ending of this arc).

March Comes in Like a Lion need a mention, because the style is amazing and I love the story.

Tales of Zestiria the X also need a mention because Ufotable quality is always top notch.

I also loved Arslan Senki: Fuujin Ranbu but 8 episodes is a really small number...

Erased was a good series but there are few flaws in the end (the manga was much better at that point).
Durarara!!x2 Ketsu was good but not one of the best.

Ushio & Tora final arc was also top notch, I loved it but the previous opening was better.

There are other anime shows in 2016 but I think the best is in this list... there are few mediocre shows like Dimension W and Drifters... and really really bad shows like Keijo, Konosuba, Re:Zero, Love Live etc... (any fanservice/slice-of-life/Idol anime).

Also I still need to watch the new Yu-Gi-Oh movie (the dark side of dimensions) that is the first movie made by the original author Kazuki Takahashi.

PS. for videogames I love japanese animation but I usually prefer western games.
Still there is Anima Gate of Memories that use an anime-like style that is my GOTY of 2016 (and this game is also sold on gog).

Sort of. These days I mostly just sign in for a few minutes to do dailies and do a quick playthrough of new living world content whenever it's released.

And since this is the Anime & Manga thread and I don't want to be completely off-topic : My highlights of the year were definitely the Aria the Avvenire OVAs and the Amanchu! anime. With Aria sitting comfortably at the top of my favorite anime/manga list, this isn't really surprising.

Then again I didn't watch a whole lot of "new" shows this year. The ones I did watch (Jojo DiU, Natsume Yuujinchou Go) were pretty great though.

I tend to spend most of my anime-watching time going through finished shows. Currently watching the Tamayura series. Some reservations but overall I'm really enjoying it. But it's a slice-of-life anime directed by Junichi Sato so me not enjoying it would have been surprising.

The strange thing is, I got gifted book #1 and #10 on separate occasions. So imagine my confusion plot-wise :D
But I love the setting: abandoned, ancient structures (a slight cyberpunkish feel to the environments on top), with that lurking, unfathomable menace. Gotta get the rest of the series.

VeTrack: Btw, snowflake feels abandoned. =P
Since it's taking up more than one character, it's messing with my text needs ;) But it's back :P
