eiii: Very nice summary of the HoMM series. I like it and hope you have time for a few questions.
I've only played HoMM 4 quite a while ago and enjoyed it a lot, up to the point where I got stuck in the campaign because I could not beat a level. I've also started to play HoMM 5 but didn't like it that much and abandoned it. I own the whole series on GOG now.
How is the difficulty and complexity of the other games compared to HoMM 4?
Would you still recommend me to (re-)start to play the series with HoMM 1?
Oh boy, see now the reactions to HoMM4 :))
But that makes it my cue to hop in here and say HoMM4 was pretty much just what I always wanted HoMM to be, with heroes entering battles and being able to have hero-only armies trashing around, with troops being able to walk on their own, more control, better hero development... But, of course, being so unlike the previous titles those who treasured them, and HoMM3 in particular, couldn't stand 4, 3DO went bankrupt because of it, Ubisoft picked the series back and made a HoMM5 that was essentially a 3D HoMM3, sweeping just about every mention or leftover from 4 under the rug.
Did play Tribes of the East from 5, but nothing else, and did find it better than 3 in some ways at least, but...
So to continue the "blasphemy" here, after an initial "wow, this is so cool", 3 quickly lost me and I don't think I ever finished more than the first campaign. Just not my play style. Not that the previous ones were, but the style seemed somehow... less serious, and I was also even younger and took it less seriously, and I could just poke at it. Think I finished HoMM1, but was already struggling with 2, only did parts of it. 4, like I said, thoroughly enjoyed it.
