Y'all are both welcome! Glad I could help! :)
How exactly do you install/play the Levels of the World? Descent newbie needs some help. :)
Are you using a source port of Descent? Or just in DOSBox?

If you're using a sourceport (and maybe if you're using DOSBox) put all the files in the sub-folder "missions". If that doesn't work, you can try putting them in the main Descent folder (The one that has the actual DESCENT.HOG and DESCENT.PIG files :)

Also just to let you know...that LOTW link has a few missions that weren't in the original, and there are a few missions that never worked (even in the original game). In the next few days I'm going to upload a cleaned up version that should have them all work. :)

So basically you can go ahead and install that, and when I update the link, you can just re-download it, and replace all the old files :)

Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to get the levels of the world all fixed up. I have been playing Descent non-stop for the last few weeks using the Rebirth source port and it's just as much fun now as it was back when I got it bundled with my Voodoo 3DFX card.

I'll be watching the thread and looking forward to the new cleaned up archive! Thanks again!
Hmm. That's good. Thanks A_Future_Pilot
Just an update on this...

I had a friend over on the Rebirth forum do this for me (I was kinda busy working on the installer). When the LOTW were originally released there were quite a few that didn't work, and never would. Then there were a good many more that SHOULD have worked, but had a few minor issues. As of right now the state of the LOTW, is almost all of them work, but there is still a handful that doesn't.

Here's a list of all the Levels of the World that don't work:

agitatio.msn (has no *.hog or *.rdl file; not fixable)

_dlow.msn (tries to open the "Training Camp" mission, but crashes because the *.hog file has a different name than the *.msn; "tcamp.msn" loads Training Camp correctly, so probably no need to fix this)

bdrome10.msn (*.msn file is made of deformed chars; mission doesn't appear in the list; writing my own *.msn file caused it to appear, but starting the mission crashed the game)

deepfrst.msn (same as above)

hd.msn (same as above)

interim.msn (same as above)

icesewer.msn (uber processor-killing freeze ... )

seals.msn (multiplayer mission; has a clean *.msn file, but crashes upon starting)

temple2.msn (same as above)

The rest of the files have been cleaned and are working nicely. I've updated the original link with the new LOTW.

Just to let you know, we haven't entirely given up hope on these missions...we're working to see if they're at all salvagable. If we ever do get them working I'll update here immediately :)

Thanks to both A_Future_Pilot and tomasdk users. I really liked this post specially because I was looking for the Vertigo expansion.

Just a thing (sorry if this is repeated or written before). For gamers who are using the D2X-XL port and wants to play the Vertigo expansion you need to copy the files D2X.HOG, D2X.MN2 into the "missions" folder (if it do not exists, create it on the port root). Then copy the HOARD.HAM file into "data" folder (the main reason I was looking this expansion again).

Launch the port and the game will appear.

Again, thanks to A_Future_Pilot and tomasdk users.
This thread should be stickied....get on it , GOG meisters
Temple2 is actually fixable: open temple2.hog in a hex editor, and change "temple.rdl" to "temple2.rdl". Make sure you don't change the length of the file; delete the first byte after "temple2.rdl" if you need to.

I highly doubt that the DAT, STS, and WAV files are necessary or even usable in Descent. If I'm not mistaken, those are for the Windows program that was included with Levels of the World.

The Definitive Collection also included 19 additional missions for Descent 1; I suggest uploading those too. They're found in the "newlevel" folder on the first disc. (The DEM and PCX files are already installed with the game, so you don't need to include them.)

A_Future_Pilot: (Except the soundtrack...I don't know/much care about that ;) If anybody else knows where it is, definitely post it! :)
I've got the Definitive Collection. Are you referring to the D2 Red Book soundtrack?

EDIT: I should probably clarify, there are three versions of the Red Book soundtrack: The original version, the Definitive Collection version, and the Vertigo version. If these are what you're talking about, I can try to get them all ripped.

You can listen to the Red Book audio for D2 in the GOG bundle, but it's packed into the game files so it's only normally accessible during gameplay. It isn't included as standalone media. But as far as I can tell, it's the Definitive Collection version. I'll try to hunt down / rip all of the music for you guys.

Here's the soundtrack for D2: The Infinite Abyss / The Definitive Collection.

Descent II - The Infinite Abyss Soundtrack 61.7 MB / ZIP
Thank you very much good sir!! :) So what different soundtracks are in the original games? Is it just MIDI in D1, MIDI and Red Book in D2? And you said there are 3 different Red Book versions?

Also what order do the various soundtracks play in? Like what's the briefing, what's the menu, etc. (I'm asking cause I'm going to make sound packs of all of them for Rebirth)

Thanks for the info!

I would suggest using OGG instead of MP3 for music packs, mainly because Rebirth seems to be having problems with MP3 playback right now. (Also, the current music packs use OGG files, so using that format for CD music as well will make things more consistent.)

I already have music packs made from my own rips of The Definitive Collection; PM me if you want them. I'll also give you a fixed version of temple2.hog, as well as the extra Descent 1 missions from The Definitive Collection that were not included with Levels of the World.

Now for the Descent 2 track order:

Main menu: Track 2 (that is, the first audio track), then track 3
Credits: Track 3
Briefing: None
Levels: All tracks after track 3. The track that plays first depends on the level number and the number of tracks on the CD--level 1 plays track 4, level 2 plays track 5, etc. Once the last track is reached (for example, level 10 and track 13 in the original version), the next level will play track 4.
