In Tyranny, the grand war between good and evil is over – and the forces of evil, led by Kyros the Overlord, have won. The Overlord’s merciless armies dominate the face of the world, and its denizens must find their new roles within the war-torn realm... even as discord begins to rumble among the ranks of Kyros’ most powerful Archons.

Players will experience the new world order under Overlord in a reactive role-playing game (RPG), interacting with the populace as a powerful Fatebinder in the Overlord’s forces -- roaming the lands to inspire loyalty or fear as they bring control to the last holdouts of the Tiers.

Smoke and Mirrors

Ironically, these games that emphasize how "choices matter" often make me feel even more railroaded. Let me translate what "choices matter" really means for this game: Sometimes in the game a dialogue choice you make will lock your character into a certain path, and block off others. Don't worry, you can play through a second time to make a different key choice! Cool, I guess. What would be really cool is if how you actually conducted yourself in the game really gave you different options throughout the game. Like, OK you made one alliance based on a past choice but you could maybe convince some other faction to work with you through dialogue or proving yourself to them? Nope, not in this game, that area is greyed out and you can't go there or you just have to kill them all (even though you didn't even know anything about them when you made that fateful choice, btw). It's hard to explain without spoilers but at the end of the day, there are basically 4 paths. So it's really a very linear game you have to play 4 times. But that's fine because the story is... OK. It's OK. It's not a masterpiece but it's interesting and I was having fun learning more about the world but it was frustrating how little autonomy I actually had in that story and being forced to be the bad guy got kind of old. I played for like 25 hours but I think I'm basically done because the gameplay loop is just not interesting. The combat is kind of samey after a while and the tactics are limited. At first, making spells is fun but that gets old too. The loot system is... a mess. You collect an endless amount of straight garbage (and it all seems to be heavy armor that you will never use because the companions are, also a mess...). So I had a decent 25 hours, which isn't bad for the 8 bucks or whatever I paid (GOG sent me a steep discount) but in the end, I am pretty disappointed. New Vegas this is not.

Best of the new RPG for me

I preferred this game over the other new isometric RPG's (Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity and Torment: Tides of Numenera(I haven't played Original Sin games)). It stinks that they never finished the game properly but still, it engaging and imaginative world and story. Reminds me of the ancient Greece stand against the Persian empire (just as dark and mean).

True RPG revival

It is a rare pleasure to play RPG that combines a meaningful story line with true moral choices, solid fighting tactics and beautiful graphics. On the top of that the game can be really challenging if wish - very good variety of difficulty levels. I spent over 200h playing this game. Fans of original Fallout series (Fallout 1 & Fallout 2) will feel like at home. 1) Story line - non banal and non linear main motive to which you are immediately submerged thanks to a very well constructed introduction - an interactive one that joins the specific history with your choices as you tag along. It is something different to stand on the side of invaders whether it is right or wrong. In time you are able to understand more and more about the reality that surrounds you thanks to reach discussions you are able to have with many characters. You are able to decide what is good and bad since you represent the court of justice on the side of the invaders. You advance your journey, your experience and your rank within the faction your represent, decide who you wish to part with and make justice in many individual small cases as well as within the general plot. 2) Fighting tactics - rich mechanism that allows to start and stop the fight as you go. You are able to decide whether you want the game to run in a fast or a slow pace as well as how often (if at all) the game should automatically stop on specific types of events. You can pre-determine how your characters act in a battle (aggressive stance, defneding indivudal or defending party etc.). The pre-determined AI from your party is not perfect. Also in general the AI of commanding system is not perfect . This is one of very few issues I found in the game. Other than that fighting system is exciting - combination of expanded phhysical skill set, magic (great compelx system) and weapons and artifacts, very well described and working nice. You can issue mutliple commands and see how these unfolds or interrupt and redefine as you go.

This was great!

I really like pillars of eternity 1, played it twice but i still have no idea about poe's world and lore and about half of mechanics and i have no intetion of finding out. Tyranny on the other hand estabilishes itself perfectly. The world is smaller, the combat is simplier at first, you have well organised trees of skills and nicely done character stat page. Character themselves are entertaning and original, the world is unsual indeed with you clearly not being the main hero of the tale but important indeed. Tyranny does both talking and fighting and does it good. You have lots of dialogue options that change because of your choices. You have a very talkable teammates who unlike some mad priest dont drown you into obsucated lore. Leaders of two armies under overlords command are so well done you just cant wait to talk mor to them. Fights feel weighty, every animation is smooth and pretty to look at. You even have special moves that can be done only with your party members. Also there are talents, artifacts, scrolls, spell constructor, forge upgrades, unique items in stores and more. Also i have to mention favor/wrath system. They way you deal with various factions and their members affects your standing both with each character and the faction as a whole. Your actions have consequences, you have to think before you say something because it can ruin a relationship you did a big effort of estabilishing. I hope there will be a sequel or more games like this.

Great game but not what they premiss

Tyranny is a great game from obsidian in a very unique setting, however, it's not what was premissed. What do you get? You get good rpg from your beloved obsidian in a great setting with good mechanics and messed up world, which can't be just fixed at this point. The game as a game is wonderful, but it's not exactly the same thing they were telling us. It is just an rpg in a different setting, there's nothing new to the genre. However, the game is solid, polished and delivered as a great experience. If you like Obsidian's games then you should like that one too.
