In Tyranny, the grand war between good and evil is over – and the forces of evil, led by Kyros the Overlord, have won. The Overlord’s merciless armies dominate the face of the world, and its denizens must find their new roles within the war-torn realm... even as discord begins to rumble among the ranks of Kyros’ most powerful Archons.
Players will experience the new world order under Overlord in a reactive role-playing game (RPG), interacting with the populace as a powerful Fatebinder in the Overlord’s forces -- roaming the lands to inspire loyalty or fear as they bring control to the last holdouts of the Tiers.
Branching, unique stories in an original setting: The battle between good and evil has already taken place, and evil stands victorious
Choices matter – make world-altering decisions with far-reaching consequence: As a Fatebinder in the Overlord’s army you wield a vast amount of power in the occupied lands of the Tiers. Will you use that to inspire stability and loyalty, will you be feared, or will you seek your own power?
Challenging, classic RPG combat: Tactical real-time-with-pause combat with new party-driven mechanics and modern presentation
A rich original setting: Not just another “hero’s journey” -- Tyranny turns the archetypal RPG story on its head and allows players to explore a new take on good and evil

As I stated in the title this game is one of the best of its kind. Although it is a little bit short both gameplay as well as the story make up for it tenfold
To sum it up, tryanny is game that is excellently written....when there is writing to enjoy. However the game feels like it is missing a decent amount of content.
I imagine this is from the game once being longer, with planned content cut for time/money.
The opening conquest section is interesting, and does affect a number of factors. I wish it did a bit more however.
The world itself is fascinating, as you help an evil overlord conquer what remains of the resistance. Allowing you to be humane or inhumane as you wish. There are a vast number of choices to make during the conquest so it can take awhile just to get your character made.
The plot restricts the amount of places you can visit in one particular playthrough. This in turn, ensures that in order to experience all the areas of the game you'll need multiple playthroughs.
This is however somewhat alleviated in that choosing a story path in the first chapter changes how you interact with each place. There are four paths you can take, three are pretty obvious, the fourth takes a bit of work.
Combat feels better than pillars of eternity from what I played. You can still die on the easy difficulty but most of the time it won't be challenging. Normal will provide decent, but not extreme challenge. I didn't play the harder difficulties.
A note for those interested: There is no romance options in the game.
While I know a large amount of people don't care for it, while others love them, I personally think its a missed opportunity. Exploring love between villains is hardly ever a thing thats touched upon. I think the setting for tyranny would have provided an excellent one.
I feel the game needed more time in the oven to truly become a classic. Its a good game, but you can easily see how it could have been something more.
I was pretty excited about the concept of Tyranny when it first came out but as I have a habit of failing to complete many games I suspected the full price might be a bit much and waited until it went on sale.
Having finally convinced myself to pick it up as I couldn't wait to play it any longer I got it for $38. I try to get $1 / hour played to justify the purchase to myself.
While I think I finished the game with about 30 hours under my belt I will definitely go back and play it again. Honestly, I dont think any other game - even those I consider to be my favorites - have ever made me pause just to think about how excited I was. Literally, giddy at how the story was playing out. I was absolutly enamored with the it, the characters, the development of my main character. I have considered that maybe the game ended too early I also think that it ended at the perfect moment. The pace was perfect, the game didn't have me grind out levels to get my characters to a playable state but provided so much time to enjoy the title. I often sat for 10s of minutes at a time just reading the dialogues and chatting with my companions to learn about them. The lore alone within this new IP was spectacular.
This game, Tyranny, has instantly become one of my favorite games ever and I look forward to more works from Obsidian. Gameplay was great, the story was perfect for me and the lore was some of the best i've read. Absolutely recommend to anyone who likes a story driven game. <3
