In Tyranny, the grand war between good and evil is over – and the forces of evil, led by Kyros the Overlord, have won. The Overlord’s merciless armies dominate the face of the world, and its denizens must find their new roles within the war-torn realm... even as discord begins to rumble among the ranks of Kyros’ most powerful Archons.
Players will experience the new world order under Overlord in a reactive role-playing game (RPG), interacting with the populace as a powerful Fatebinder in the Overlord’s forces -- roaming the lands to inspire loyalty or fear as they bring control to the last holdouts of the Tiers.
Branching, unique stories in an original setting: The battle between good and evil has already taken place, and evil stands victorious
Choices matter – make world-altering decisions with far-reaching consequence: As a Fatebinder in the Overlord’s army you wield a vast amount of power in the occupied lands of the Tiers. Will you use that to inspire stability and loyalty, will you be feared, or will you seek your own power?
Challenging, classic RPG combat: Tactical real-time-with-pause combat with new party-driven mechanics and modern presentation
A rich original setting: Not just another “hero’s journey” -- Tyranny turns the archetypal RPG story on its head and allows players to explore a new take on good and evil

Tyranny features great world building and plot, with clever and branching dialogues. Our choices matter in story development and later dialogues, sometimes in unexpected ways, but it is rarely feels unfair. Game also features combat mechanics with original spin. My only criticism is that it is constantly felt that developers had to save money and time on development – UI is rough and doesn’t look good on high-DPI monitors, few dialogues have voiceover, score, while being memorable, is criminally short. But if you can see past this roughness, you will enjoy yourself.
Well, for me Tyranny is very solid and interesting piece of crpg. I'm very bored of being good guy on the mission to save the miserable world from its own fears and troubles. Many with disagree but in lots of aspects this game is much better than PoE which is also very good. What i do like about Tyranny is simple fact we don't deal with typical and usual stuff like in most similar productions vide many races etc. Human, beasts and spectrals are far enough for decent play without being bored by unimportant stories. Story line is good played. Mechanics are good but could be better, skill and progress sytem is very transparent, fights are also good but as it is common for this kind of games it is getting bored after a while. I'm still having fun playing Tyranny and recommend this game.
First of all if you liked Pillars of Eternity this game is a great upgrade. They took all the things bad about PoE, stats, no party ai, party size, wonky combat, and improved them. The game is pretty great, the story is original and the setting is super cool. The combat isn't amazing, but it works about as expected for a cRPG. Overall I'd say this is one of the best party based RPGs to come out in a long while.
But there's a downside, your main character the fatebinder, is dull as dishwater, mechanically speaking. There are no classes and you gain powers from a list of generic power trees, none of them are terribly inspiring or fit any kind of theme other than being as generic as possible. Meanwhile every ally you get has an amazing and super cool list of skill trees that are wonderfully thematic and mechanically diverse. This could have been easily solved with classes, but the game doesn't have those for... some reason I couldn't begin to fathom. The ability trees have clear class themes, but they're bare bones and uninspired. Thankfully the magic system is straight up AMAZING. The magic system in this game really shines, and really pushes you to play a mage to take advantage of this games most unique and interesting system that a cRPG has ever had.
tl;dr play a mage.
So, I got this a while ago, and just plowed through it. Took about 30 hours.
The good:
1) The writing is decent. I liked the change of perspective, and there are certainly lots of options in most situations (there are some glaring exceptions, see below)
1a) In that vein, there are multiple solutions to most situations (sometimes more than 2, which is a refeshing change.)
2) It's not too long, and not too short. I did most, if not all side quests.
The bad:
1) It's buggy. I've got missing UI strings all over the place, even after reinstalling. Sometimes, the game just won't start, and I have to kill the process for it to even launch again. I even had it hang on the intro video.
1a) In that vein, the achievements linked to GoG galaxy don't pop. Even though the time tracker does.
2) There is a situation in Act 2 that doesn't give options, and railroads you hard.
3) Act 3 is short. Really short. Overall, the game is a decent length, but it's front loaded. I did about 10 hours in Act 1, 15 in Act2, and 5 in Act 3, and that was taking my time in Act 3.
4) The pathing is pretty terrible. I've had characters run around the entire fight melee to get to a person right in front of them.
Overall, if you can get it on sale, it's worth a playthrough. It's not worth full price though.
One of the best games I have played in years and in my view, better than Pillars of Eternity.
--A fascinating, engrossing, and original storyline.
--Tough, engaging combat that is just a smidgen less punishing than POE.
--Terrific progression systems.
--Beautiful and unique art design.
Obsidian has replaced Bioware as our finest creator of RPGs, with only Inxile nipping at its heels for that status. I look forward to seeing them compete for the mantle of King of RPGs in the years to come. We should all be grateful at how they have rescued us from what seems to be an increasing tendency on the part of AAA studios to produce underwhelming and downright disappointing RPGS.
Bravo!
