Please don't shout at me, but does it have a...story?

I mean, beyond the 'you need to kill everything as hard as possible' thing?

I love shooters, but I like some narrative with them. Like the more recent Wolfensteins.

And, yes, I fully understand few people play Doom for a story :)

Yes. It explains vaguely what happened to the Doom Guy after original games.

Yes. It's not as fleshed out as Wolfenstein, but there's a lot of narrative as you play, as well as some backround lore with secrets and codex entries.

jsidhu762: There are some detours that will lead to secrets. You'll need a good eye to spot them.
I meant optional non secret areas, or how wide open some levels in the 2016 game were....so far it's been more or less a straightforward path(only on level 1 atm...took a break for a bit to do other stuff) with some secret areas on the side.

Now that's ok.....hopefully it will open up more later on, but if not that's ok too.

StingingVelvet: I honestly don't remember the ending of 2016 enough to comment. I just remember the AI and the hints at demons invading Earth, so I guess I was good to go. It's funny how many lore and story logs there are to find, since the game isn't story focused at all. This one has a few more cutscenes, but not a ton. The general idea of "Doom Slayer is part of an ancient group of knights, seems to be the last one, is fighting off the demons on Earth" sums it up just fine for me.
Fair enough....it just can be a bit head scratching to some(like me) who follow the lore/story more closely.

StingingVelvet: Around 5 hours into the game now and it's getting better. You get used to the platforming and it starts to feel second nature, like it did in Titanfall 2 (a great singleplayer FPS by the way). More importantly as you get more weapons and upgrades the ammo situation gets much better and you no longer have to chainsaw things constantly. In a pretty nice groove now.
BTW didn't you say ammo is ONLY given through glory kills?

I am playing on XB1 and there are some ammo/health pickups in the areas i've been in(maybe it's only that way on PC?).

idbeholdME: VEGA is alive because in the first game, you made a backup of him before deleting him
But HOW/WHEN? He was in a huge complex needing tons of power(cpu/electrical) to function, and all I saw in that bit was the doom marine destroying things.

I do as well, and yes it does....told through some cutscenes and also logs(they look like glowing orange colored pages floating in mid air in some areas, though there may be other types later on).

Thanks, folks. Sounds good.

Sounds great, I am waiting for that game very much

GameRager: BTW didn't you say ammo is ONLY given through glory kills?
No, there's ammo packs around. They just aren't super plentiful, and your ammo limit is REALLY low. So early on when you only have a couple guns you pretty much have to chainsaw enemies to keep your ammo up. As the game goes on and you're using more guns and have some upgrades, you can do it much less often.

The game is clearly designed around making you switch guns a lot though. Different enemies have different weaknesses to different guns. This is a design decision some like and some hate, it's all up to the person.

When you were going to delete him at the terminal near the end of the game, you can see the main character press a button to make a backup of him first before deleting him and takes the "flash drive" the backup is on with him before setting off.

It was actually probably the only moment in the game where the guy you play as showed some character depth instead of "ME ANGRY, ME SMASH EVERYTHING!!!"

Well yeah, but they couldn't please everyone....if they'd have made it too easy, people would likely be calling it casual, and as it now is you'll likely have some others saying it's too hard.

Which is odd, seeing as it(as I said before) was housed in a massive complex....I mean how could one fit it on a thumb drive? o.0

But eh maybe it was advanced tech or some such only doom marine has.....who knows.

That said, thanks for pointing that scene out to me(didn't notice that bit enough, I guess). :)

Eh, I think he showed it elsewhere....just through doing what he was best at(smashing things, as you said).

Take the whole arc reactor complex, for example....he destroyed the tech regardless of being able to save it because he knew how bad it was(at least that's what it seemed like from watching it)

swsoboleski89: i dont like doom, but did buy the last one for $20 just because. watched eternal gameplay and it looks really generic compared to 2016.
time to bring back quake

But Doom was really generic! It's an Id game, it's all they can do!

They've taken the marketing track of "Doom is just about combat and killing demons!" and it's working out for them. This one seems to be selling even more than the last one, so I doubt they change gears anytime soon.

It came out on Friday (the 20th).

It’s not great. Graphically ok. Ammo is virtually non existent. No pistol. No reload. Even weapons seem to switch automatically. Chainsaw is useless. Flamer is useless. Spider demon appears in first level and is super hard to kill, more so than all the other beasts. Most enemies stagger and stay then come back, meaning you have to go for glory kills. Thankfully it doesn’t have much of the “story” elements that were so bad in wolfenstein. It’s also very much mario is given a couple of limited weapons to battle hell. Finally got to ship for some upgrades, doesn’t seem to be anything worth writing home about, was struggling to find a tune which would help me.
May give it a bit more time, but for me 4-5 out of ten, worse than 2016.
Oh, and don’t forget forced Bethesda account.
I thought wolfenstein was a better shooter, though very slow and dragging interludes, “go fetch welder”, “go find folder” etc.

That user is likely a spammer trying to get enough rep to post links....they have been posting short single posts in many threads, not replying to anyone who replies to them, etc.
The game is somewhat rough around the edges, but the gunplay itself is excellent. It starts out slow, but quickly picks up.
I think I'm in the minority, but I actually like the story elements

Screw Marauders and Whiplashes. :P
