Needs Work

The lack of cover mechanics and the like makes this rather bare-bones, and the cognition point system is just kind of silly. The idea that a mechanicus warrior can't use their weapons without arbitrary points gained from scanning is absurd, and also creates situations where your units are just standing around doing nothing. Also, the difficulty of missions seems to be broken. I've run into "easy" missions where I am outnumbered and out-geared, whereas other "easy" missions pit me against very winnable odds. There should not be this much variance within a single difficulty rating.

It's a bit clunky. Moving the map by mouse doesn't work properly, waiting for a toon to finish moving or attacking takes too long and can't be skipped, the nosphere view at the beginning of a battle doesn't give enough information, and the battles become boring after a short while. It's hard at the beginning, and then your techprists get powerful much more quickly than the enemies, so it get's a bit casual near the end. I finished it once, and enjoyed the neat details and gritty humor, but I think that's about it for me. Uses way too much ressources for the quality of the graphics

All hail the Fabricator-General!

This turn based tactical game is awesome. The fighting is fun, makes sense, and requires that you plan your attacks a few steps ahead. You are able to constantly upgrade your Tech-Priest with better weapons, gear, and new mechanical abilities as they become more machine than man. This is dead on when it comes to 40k lore. Hell, the developers even went so far as to have all of the Tech-Priest speak in Techna-Lingua, which is a form of binary codes that are ultra compressed, and incomprehensible to anyone without the proper implants. Bulwark Studios & Kasedo Games knocked it out of the park on this one (then they had a servitor made from a particulary incompetent intern go and retrieve that ball).

Not epic, in combat or the story

I did my best to like this game because I am a huge fan of Dawn of War 2 and even stuck with Battlefleet Gothic: Armada until the end. But after I killed Ubjao in a single turn and had four techpriests at or near two full disciplines, I just couldn't go on anymore. The good: Growing my techpriests was addictive. There are better description of it than I can do, so I'll leave it at that. The dialogue of the two main characters, Videx and Scaevola, is also a delightful, especially when they talk to each other. Sadly there is no voice acting, but they have such unique speech that just reading their lines I could imagine how they would sound. This game eschews the traditional restrictive move-then-attack model of turn based tactics with a point based action system. You can store multiple Cognition Points then spend those points to move and attack as many times as you have points. There are multiple ways to gain these points in and out of combat, and not all actions use CP. So there is a lot of freedom to use CP in smart ways. The bad: The Necrons in this game are the most boring enemy I have seen in a WH40K game. All Necrons except the bosses are silent and have the personality of an admantium ingot. The bosses are a bit more unique and have voice acting but they appear only a little. The combat also gets boring fast. Although each enemy type tends to have a gimmick or two, their AI predominantly just rushes you until they are in firing range. It gets exciting when a new enemy type is introduced, but there are only a handful of those and many more missions. So most of the combat feels like a slog. Finally, the random events between combat frequently have arbitrary or even nonsensicle outcomes that may even mess up the tactical battles. The tactical combat of Mechanicus is enjoyable while it's fresh, but that doesn't last. The epicness of the grimdark WH40K is basically nonexistent. Too much of the former. Too little of the latter.

A really good suprise !

Mechanicus is X-Com in 40k, except it's better for a few reasons : - The lore of a Adeptus Mechanicus expedition exploring a awakening Necron Tomb World is awesome - The gameplay and the difficulty are highly customisabled - The low randomness of the game remove the most frustrating part of XCom with those high chances miss.. An excellent W40k game which happens to also be a really nice one, even without it licence.
