So, definitely you want to play the first game first, this game is connected to the end of the first game. I don't want to spoil it other than to say, the first game is a bit more of a traditional narrative, this is more spaced out and weird (but it all makes sense in the end). Should only take about 3 hours to complete, so not sure if full price is worth it, but very happy to support a great and interesting solo developer.
When gameplay is minimal, but the writing (and definitely voice acting) is great, it goes to show how good narrative-driven games can be. The ending was just maybe slightly underwhelming, but overall this was a wonderful experience. Basically, walking around, choose dialogue and complete a few tasks like telling drunk teenagers not to light fireworks (and take their whisky). But then a mystery emerges.... I'll say no more, I knew little going in, which I liked.
but seriously... Solo developer games are always a mixed bag, but this one did what others failed to... It didn't overstay its welcome. This game has a theme that is not hidden but well implemented, a very touching ending (credit sequence especially made me a bit teary), but interactable made it still a part of the experience. It's only a few hours at most, but unlike eg undertale which is supposedly the best indie game ever,... I felt engaged to the end, and this game stopped once the point had been made and the story told. Immediately purchased the sequel after playing this.
I envy those who played this back in the day..... but...When will I learn? Reviews that say 'game from my childhood' should not be counted in my personal appraisal of whether I should buy a game (but this is my issue, no one else's, what follows is a guide for those who want to know if they should buy it). This is the first time I played the game, and make no mistake, for its day, it was a very very good game, I can tell even after all these years. The problem is that the PC port is imperfect (camera behaves itself about 70% of the time, so annoying but not a deal-breaker). But the main gameplay loop is basic stealth which gets old, very fast. I got 7 hours in, so I estimate over half way, but then I just saw room after room of frustration (don't get me wrong, the stealth isn't 'bad' but it's simplistic enough that the easy rooms are boring, and the harder ones become frustrating). Technically, took some tinkering to avoid visual glitches or slowdowns and sound eventually kept playing up. Not the fault of the game, but it did impact my experience. I think the story/characters would have been perfect for 12 year old me, they're good, but a little light in writing. Summary: If you don't know/like games of this style from this era, probably don't jump in here. If you do, definitely give it a shot. Worthy of the 'classic' title, if a little dated.
Yeah, it's overrated, not bad mind you, but bleh. The music is great, the originality is there, it's a parady of sorts. Charming... but it goes WAY too long. After 3 hours I was getting bored, 5 hour mark I was done, still didn't finish it. I'd say do some research first. I went in blind just hearing that it was everyone's darling and original, but definitely not for me. It's a 2 star game, but a +1 is for being an interesting indie game. Pass.
I remember the game on release, worse reception than aliens:Colonial Marines... no really, most people forget this game tanked. It was re released and the developers to their credit listened to the criticisms and fixed the game up and it did rather well. Looking back in 2019, this game is full of bad decisions. Level design is atrocious, can't reload the gun when you want, just to name 2. It was ok at the time because we didn't know better. Ok smart guy, how should you do it? Easy, look at AVP 2 (released only a couple of years later) fixed every detail, made the story and gameplay much better. Sadly that game is abandonware, but if you can get it, play it. If you have played it and are wondering about going back to this one........... DO NOT, save your money. Stick with AVP 2 or the remake from 2010, whilst not perfect it improves on this old heap of junk. AVOID AVOID AVOID (I liked shooters from the late 90s and early 2000s, I was there, this is rubbish).
Would you like to spend the price of a movie ticket on a two hour interactive indie, narrative driven darling of a game? Then buy this game Would you like to spend less than that but still like the idea? Then buy this game (on special). Beautiful, wonderful voice acting and music. Game play is basic, as long as you know that, you'll be fine. Leave a message to the world.
I grew up in this era, love Doom I and II, Duke 3d and Unreal, even enjoyed Quake II, (although that is harking WAY back in the memory)... anyway.... DO NOT BUY THIS GAME unless you have thick nastolgia glasses. If you played it a lot in your childhood and love it, fair enough, otherwise, this misses every note of good game design from the era. Memorable enemies? NOPE, brown pixel guys Locations? NOPE brown castles. Weapons? Generic, but at least functional. Level design was admitedately quite good, intuitative even. But I played Duke 3d on 'hard' and painkiller on nightmare, but here, on 'easy' the first enemy needs 4 shotgun blasts to the face, second enemy takes off 80 health in 1 hit. That would be ok, make a tough game, fine.... but everything is brown, pixelated and depressing, and very reptitive. DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR ANYONE, unless you grew up on this game. Oh, and NOOOO music, imagine doom without music? Yeah that's what's happening here.
Definitely not bad, if you like RPG rogue like games with lots of different challenges this is probably a good start. The 'stutter' which makes the action a bit disjointed is a problem, but adding platforming was one step too far for me. Solid effort, can recommend, but not for me.
